It may be used on a number of computer ranges, either interactively for exploratory data analysis, or in batch mode for standard data analysis. The great flexibility of GENSTAT is demonstrated in this handbook by analysing the wide range of examples discussed in Applied Statistics - Principles and Examples (Cox and Snell, 1981). GENSTAT programs are listed for each of the examples. Most of the data sets are small but often it is these seemingly small problems which involve the most tricky statistical and computational procedures. This handbook is self-contained although for a full description of the analysis and interpretation it should be used in parallel with Applied Statistics - Principles and Examples.

Book excerpt: Biplots are the multivariate analog of scatter plots, approximating the multivariate distribution of a sample in a few dimensions to produce a graphic display. In addition, they superimpose representations of the variables on this display so that the relationships between the sample and the variable can be studied. Like scatter plots, biplots are useful for detecting patterns and for displaying the results found by more formal methods of analysis. In recent years the theory of biplots has been considerably extended. The approach adopted here is geometric, permitting a natural integration of well-known methods, such as components analysis, correspondence analysis, and canonical variate analysis as well as some newer and less well-known methods, such as nonlinear biplots and biadditive models.

The symposium emphasised: • Bridging the gab between molecular biology, applied genetics, plant nutrition and plant breeding. • The development of methodologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of nutrition of plants • Quality of plant products. With sessions on: Nitrogen; Phosphorous; Micronutrients; Symbiosis; Membranes; Stress; Heavy Metals and Plant Breeding. In comparison with the previous conferences in this series more emphasis was placed on use of molecular techniques to clarify physiological mechanisms and processes, gene expression and regulation, as well as genetic marker assisted analysis. Significant of molecular genetic markers and other progress was reported in exploitation biotechnologies in breeding programmes.
