Feierstein examines how memories and representations of genocide are the terrain in which both the strategic objectives of genocide and the possibilities of challenging those objectives are contested. These memories and representations provide the foundation upon which critical judgments about the past are constructed and offer the potential for assuming responsibility and working through the consequences of genocide. This book proposes that terror continues to hijack the actions and identities of surviving societies via a process of the construction of memories and social representations of the lived experience in a final stage of genocide Feierstein terms "symbolic enactment". In doing so, Feierstein examines the contributions of various disciplines to comprehending memory processes and social representations. It covers a range of topics, from the nature of memory based on the neuroscientific discoveries of the last half-century to psychoanalytic theories on the functioning of the mind, including the role of psychic defense mechanisms, the unconscious mind, collective pacts of denial and different forms of desensitization. It also explores historiographical debates between forms of history and forms of memory, as well as sociological contributions to the analysis of social frames of memory, cultural memory, generational transmission and related issues. The first volume of a three-volume work that aims to identify and evaluate the various consequences of genocidal social practices and the possibility of healing the scars left on individuals’ subjectivities and the social fabric by genocide. On July 20, 2016, the regime in Turkey was changed. This change has destroyed almost 300 hundred years of democratic heritage. Rule of law and the other founding principles of Republic which were set by Ataturk have been replaced by a permanent decree regime. Around 1,500,000 citizens from every faction of society have been made SOCIALLY DEAD. Around 100 citizens were unable to tolerate this way of living, suffering a PERMANENT SOCIAL DEATH and unfortunately chose to end their unsustainable lives. Numerous citizens have been killed in prisons, detention and torture centers as a result of the torture they were subjected to. Furthermore, the treatments of numerous citizens are being hindered. Pregnant ladies are being detained and their unborn babies are killed. The massive purge and physical killings made by the decisions of Decrees or individual ministers are shown to the public as if they were only dismissals, but the practical consequences of them are individual SOCIAL KILLINGS. The total number of SOCIAL DEATHS is around 1,500,000. Around 1,500,000 innocent citizens and their descendants have been socially killed. The practice of systematic and mass social killing is a post-modern SOCIAL GENOCIDE. After four years of research, I have identified 114 types of social killing methods and tools. I also sent numerous official claims to the various Turkish public and official institutions and told them to end committing the crime of genocide. In the meantime, the criminals who put the genocide into action also segregated the victims from the rest of society. This was done to prevent the unification of the citizens who were the individual victims of the massive genocide, and also the indirect victims of the genocide, which I estimate to be around 4,000,000. This was also done to prevent the united struggle against such atrocities. This separation allowed genocide criminals to commit the crime more easily. To those who wish, you can act jointly in the fight against these violent crimes against humanity and even against unborn babies. I appeal to you to stand by and defend the rights, dignity, and lives of innocent people against those who commit crimes against humanity.

In 1915-1916, roughly a million and a half Armenians were murdered in the territory of the Ottoman Empire, which had been home to them for centuries. Ever since, a dispute between Armenians and Turkey has been ongoing over the qualification of the massacres. The contributors to this volume examine the legal nature and consequences of this event. Their investigation strives to be completely neutral and technical. The essays also look at the broader issue of denial. For instance, in Turkey, public speech on the matter can still trigger criminal prosecution whereas in other European States denial of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity is criminalized. However, the European Court of Human Rights views criminal prosecution of denial of the Armenian massacres as unlawful. In addition, one essay considers a state’s obligation to remember by looking at lessons learnt from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Another contributor looks at a collective right to remember and some ideas to move forward towards a solution. Moreover, the book explores the way the Armenian massacres have affected the relationship between Turkey and the European Union.

Using case studies based on the regimes of Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay, this book shows how U.S foreign policy – far from promoting long term political stability and democratic institutions – has actually undermined them. The first part of the book is an inquiry into the larger historical context in which the development of an unequal power relationship between the United States and Latin American and Caribbean nations evolved after the proliferation of the Monroe Doctrine. The region came to be seen as a contested terrain in the East-West conflict of the Cold War, and a new US-inspired ideology, the ‘National Security Doctrine’, was used to justify military operations and the hunting down of individuals and groups labelled as ‘communists’. Following on from this historical context, the book then provides an analysis of the mechanisms of state and genocidal violence is offered, demonstrating how in order to get to know the internal enemy, national armies relied on US intelligence training and economic aid to carry out their surveillance campaigns.
