Book excerpt: This book compiles the fundamental advances resulting from of oil-palm genome and transcriptome sequencing, and describes the challenges faced and strategies applied in sequencing, assembling and annotating oil palm genome sequences. The availability of genome and transcriptome data has made the mining of a high number of new molecular markers useful for genetic diversity as well as marker-trait association studies and the book presents high-throughput genotyping platforms, which allow the detection of QTL regions associated with interesting oil palm traits such as oil unsaturation and yield components using classical genetic and association mapping approaches. Lastly, it also presents the discovery of major genes governing economically important traits of the oil palm. Covering the history of oil palm expansion, classical and molecular cytogenetics, improvements based on wild and advanced genetic materials, and the science of oil palm breeding, the book is a valuable resource for scientists involved in plant genetic research.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. By 2050, human population is expected to reach 9.7 billion. The demand for increased food production needs to be met from ever reducing resources of land, water and other environmental constraints. Rice remains the staple food source for a majority of the global populations, but especially in Asia where ninety percent of rice is grown and consumed. Climate change continues to impose abiotic and biotic stresses that curtail rice quality and yields. Researchers have been challenged to provide innovative solutions to maintain, or even increase, rice production. Amongst them, the ‘green super rice’ breeding strategy has been successful for leading the development and release of multiple abiotic and biotic stress tolerant rice varieties. Recent advances in plant molecular biology and biotechnologies have led to the identification of stress responsive genes and signaling pathways, which open up new paradigms to augment rice productivity. Accordingly, transcription factors, protein kinases and enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins all contribute to an intricate network of events that guard and maintain cellular integrity. In addition, various quantitative trait loci associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of novel genes for biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Mechanistic understanding of the genetic basis of traits, such as N and P use, is allowing rice researchers to engineer nutrient-efficient rice varieties, which would result in higher yields with lower inputs. Likewise, the research in micronutrients biosynthesis opens doors to genetic engineering of metabolic pathways to enhance micronutrients production. With third generation sequencing techniques on the horizon, exciting progress can be expected to vastly improve molecular markers for gene-trait associations forecast with increasing accuracy. This book emphasizes on the areas of rice science that attempt to overcome the foremost limitations in rice production. Our intention is to highlight research advances in the fields of physiology, molecular breeding and genetics, with a special focus on increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and nutritional quality of rice.

This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Biology - Genetics / Gene Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (Madurai Agricultural College and Research Institute), course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: An investigation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) was carried out subjecting six ‘lines’ and 15 ‘testers’ crossed in a Line x Tester mating design to estimate gene action, combining ability and heterosis for yield and drought tolerant traits under aerobic condition. The 21 parents were also surveyed using SSR markers. From the Line x Tester analysis, the hybrids exhibited significant variation among themselves for all the characters studied under aerobic condition. The study of gene action for drought tolerance and yield component traits revealed that all the traits exhibited dominant gene action which was predominant. Therefore, to harness the dominant gene effects, either heterosis breeding or selection at later generations would be an appropriate breeding methodology. Based on the per se performance of lines and testers, the following parents i.e., IR79128A (L1), IR79156A (L2), COMS14A (L5), COMS24A (L6), IR 80286-22-3-6-1R (T3) and IR7925A-428-2-1-1R (T4) were adjudged as the best parents and crosses involving them would be expected to throw desirable segregants for both yield and drought tolerant traits under aerobic condition. Based on the gca effects, the parents IR79128A (L1), IR70369A (L4), IR79156A (L2), BI-33 (T15), IR79582-21-2-2-1R (T5), KMP-105 (T11), T1 (IR 69726-29-1-2-2R) and MAS - 946-1 (T9) were the best general combiners and the crosses involving them would result in the identification of superior segregants with favourable genes for both drought and yield. Out of 21 parents evaluated based on per se and gca effects, three ‘lines’ viz., IR79128A (L1), IR79156A (L2) and IR70369A (L4) and three ‘testers’ viz., IR7925A-428-2-1-1R (T11), KMP -148 (T12) and BI-33 (T15) were identified as the best genotypes which will be utilized in further breeding programmes as parents for improvement of yield and drought tolerance under aerobic conditions. The cross combination IR70369A / MAS -26 (L4 x T10) was identified as the best for recombination breeding to get desirable segregants for yield and drought tolerant traits under aerobic conditions. The cross combinations viz., IR70369A / IR 7925A-428-2-1-1R (L4 x T4) and IR70369A / KMP-105 (L4 x T11) had high per se, sca effects and standard heterosis for drought tolerant and yield traits under aerobic conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a valuable resource for understanding the complex processes controlling yield and value-added traits. Bacterial blight (BB) is a vascular disease of rice, caused by strains of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and provides insight, both practical and basic, into the concepts of susceptibility and resistance. Basic knowledge has been empirically and, more recently, intentionally exploited for broad and durable resistance to the disease. Bacterial blight involves representatives of most classes of resistance genes (R genes) and pathways for basal plant immunity. The study of BB also revealed novelties not observed in other models, possibly due to the long history of rice cultivation and the constant disease pressure. Conspicuous are the recessive R genes that target the notorious type III Transcription Activator-like effectors (TALes) of Xoo. Results indicate that pathogen and host are currently in a battle over a small patch of ground involving TALes function. At the same time, analyses of rice disease physiology are adding to a growing body of knowledge for plant disease processes and to how these processes are intertwined with disease susceptibility. The basic processes of BB present rich targets for the rapid advances in genome editing.

Diallel analysis was carried out based on the method I and model I as suggested by Griffing. Seven economically important yield components traits were evaluated based on per se performance, general and specific combining ability effects, gene action and heterosis. The cross ADT 36 x ADT 37 and ASD 16 x ADT 36 exhibited highly significant sca effects and highly significant heterosis for grain yield and for most of its yield component traits. Hence, these crosses can be exploited for heterosis breeding provided cms system is available in the genetic background of ADT 36 and ASD 16 and thereby amidst farming community."
