Book Synopsis The Book of Genesis by : Richard N. Hughes
Download or read book The Book of Genesis written by Richard N. Hughes and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genesis is the first book of the Bible, and in many ways, offers us the Bible in miniature. It is a book of beginnings, indeed it's original title in the ancient Hebrew was "Bere-Shith" - which translates "In the beginning," which are the first words of the book. Parenthetically, that is the way many books in the Bible were originally named. In both Jewish and Christian circles, Genesis is believed to have been written by Moses, who also is also believed to be the author of the next four books of the Bible. Those five books, known as The Pentateuch, (which means, "the five") are believed to have been written during the forty years when the Jews wandered in the wilderness, following the exodus from Egypt. It should be pointed out, however, that Genesis is made up of many stories of a traditional nature which may date back hundreds of years before Moses' time. It might be more accurate to say that Moses was the compiler of Genesis, drawing from oral histories and folk tales and weaving them together into a coherent narrative. The work was his, but the material was almost certainly traditional. Many Biblical scholars, although certainly not all, believe that there are three specific sources represented in Genesis and the other books of the Pentateuch, which range in origin from the tenth to the fifth century BC. They are as follows: The J strain: named for Jahweh, (Yahweh) which is the personal name for God in the Old Testament. The J strain is an amalgamation of divine revelation and scientific data. The E strain: named for Elohim, which was one of the early names for God. This strain consists mainly of dreams and divine revelations. The P strain: called, the "Priestly" strain, because it deals much more with the specifics of dates, details and descriptions, explaining, providing a bridge, as Priests do. This can be confusing at times because there are instances when the three strains contradict one another, and in some sense, each has its own distinctive theology. It should also be said that while this theory is widely held, it cannot be conclusively proved. For all practical purposes, it is best to think of Moses as the author, understanding that he would have borrowed from a number of different sources in creating the book. We should also understand that for a period of more than a thousand years, Genesis and the other books of the Pentateuch were subjected to editing and revision. Indeed, Genesis was not set in its final form, the form we read today, until about 250 BC, when the translation was made into the Greek. In your Bible study, you will come across the word "septuagint" (sept - TOO - uh - jint) which is the name given to that translation because it was done by 72 Jewish scholars who were brought to Egypt by Ptolemy II to translate the five books written by Moses. The book of Genesis is important to us because it is the foundation for understanding the rest of the Bible. All of the great themes of the Bible are introduced in Genesis, and one of the pleasures in studying the book in detail is being able to pick them out when they appear. Christians, particularly, will find all of the theme's of Jesus' ministry in this remarkable book, which is not surprising, because he would have studied Genesis in essentially the same form that we will study it in these lessons...
Book Synopsis The Genesis of East Asia, 221 B.C.-A.D. 907 by : Charles Holcombe
Download or read book The Genesis of East Asia, 221 B.C.-A.D. 907 written by Charles Holcombe and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genesis of East Asia examines in a comprehensive and novel way the critically formative period when a culturally coherent geopolitical region identifiable as East Asia first took shape. By sifting through an impressive array of both primary material and modern interpretations, Charles Holcombe unravels what “East Asia” means, and why. He brings to bear archaeological, textual, and linguistic evidence to elucidate how the region developed through mutual stimulation and consolidation from its highly plural origins into what we now think of as the nation-states of China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Beginning with the Qin dynasty conquest of 221 B.C. which brought large portions of what are now Korea and Vietnam within China’s frontiers, the book goes on to examine the period of intense interaction that followed with the many scattered local tribal cultures then under China’s imperial sway as well as across its borders. Even the distant Japanese islands could not escape being profoundly transformed by developments on the mainland. Eventually, under the looming shadow of the Chinese empire, independent native states and civilizations matured for the first time in both Japan and Korea, and one frontier region, later known as Vietnam, moved toward independence. Exhaustively researched and engagingly written, this study of state formation in East Asia will be required reading for students and scholars of ancient and medieval East Asian history. It will be invaluable as well to anyone interested in the problems of ethno-nationalism in the post-Cold War era.
Book Synopsis Historical Genesis by : Richard James Fischer
Download or read book Historical Genesis written by Richard James Fischer and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning chapters of Genesis come alive with characters, places, and events almost totally unknown outside of the Bible itself except when illuminated by the fascinating history of the ancient Near East. Did a man we call Adam actually exist? Was someone known to us as Noah warned of a cataclysmic flood and instructed to build an ark? Could the Tower of Babel incident actually have happened? The reader will gain a new appreciation for the historical integrity of Genesis 2-11, and marvel at the evidence that the persons, places, and events depicted, though long misunderstood, could be real.

Book excerpt: Neutral Ground: A Political History of Espionage Fiction takes the reader behind the fiction and explores the real-world political, military, and diplomatic events that have consistently and significantly threaded their way through the fabric of the genre. Against this historical timeline, it examines how numerous authors including Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, Graham Greene, and John le Carre have engaged reality in order to write the espionage novels that have become literary classics and, in selected cases, have also served to alter the course of government policy. --From publisher's description.

Download or read book Euclid in China written by Engelfriet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Jesuits' programme of introduction to European culture, in 1607 the Elements of Euclid (± 300 BC) were translated for the first time into Chinese. The translation of this epoch-making ancient Greek textbook on deductive geometry meant a confrontation of contemporary Chinese and European cultures. Part I of Peter Engelfriet's work deals mainly with the European and Chinese backgrounds, part II with linguistic and textual matters. In part III the manner in which learned Chinese tried to integrate this new knowledge into their own, Chinese, mathematical and cultural traditions comes to the fore. This fascinating work explores in depth and at various levels the circumstances and mechanisms that shaped the transmission of a key work of science from one language and cultural context onto another. Consequently it offers often surprising insights into the ways of intercultural exchange and misunderstandings.
Book Synopsis The Origins and Character of the Ancient Chinese City by : Paul Wheatley
Download or read book The Origins and Character of the Ancient Chinese City written by Paul Wheatley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes elucidate the manner in which there emerged, on the North China plain, hierarchically structured, functionally specialized social institutions organized on a political and territorial basis during the second millennium b.c. They describe the way in which, during subsequent centuries, these institutes were diffused through much of the rest of North and Central China. Author Paul Wheatley equates the emergence of the ceremonial center, as evidenced in Shang China, with a functional and developmental stage in urban genesis, and substantiates his argument with comparative evidence from the Americas, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Yoruba territories. The Origins and Character of the Ancient Chinese City seeks in small measure to help redress the current imbalance between our knowledge of the contemporary, Western-style city on the one hand, and of the urbanism characteristic of the traditional world on the other. Those aspects of urban theory which have been derived predominantly from the investigation of Western urbanism, are tested against, rather than applied to ancient China. The Origins and Character of the Ancient Chinese City examines the cosmological symbolism of the Chinese city, constructed as a world unto itself. It suggests, with a wealth of argument and evidence, that this cosmo-magical role underpinned the functional unity of the city everywhere, until new bases for urban life began to develop in the Hellenistic world. Whereas the majority of previous investigations into the nature of the Chinese city have been undertaken from the standpoint of elites, The Origins and Character of the Ancient Chinese City has adopted a point of view closer to that of the social scientist than the geographer.
