Le formalisme standard afin de décrire la génération du second harmonique (GSH), tel qu'on le trouve dans plusieurs livres d'optique1, fait des approximations et des simplifications au niveau du développement qui n'est pas nécessairement juste pour tous les matériaux. En refaisant celui-ci sans approximations, on va obtenir un nouveau formalisme afin de décrire l'intensité du faisceau de GSH dans des matériaux fortement dispersifs. On cherche aussi à confirmer celui-ci expérimentalement. Cette thèse se différencie des autres travaux puisque l'on considère plusieurs facteurs peu usuels au niveau de l'onde harmonique. On travaille avec le signal de GSH dans la bande d'absorption d'un matériau hautement dispersif avec un faisceau de pompe à faible intensité. Dans le cadre des formulations usuelles, on n'est pas capable de trouver une bonne représentation pour l'indice de réfraction de notre signal harmonique. Nous avons donc élaboré un modèle plus général pour celui-ci dans le cas du 2-méthyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA), sans négliger l'absorption. Aussi, puisqu'on travaille avec une couche mince de MNA, on doit inclure l'effet des réflexions multiples dans le formalisme. Bien que ceci puisse paraître superflu, ça nous mène à des résultats intéressants et pourrait avoir des implications significatives dans le cas des matériaux hautement dispersifs. Finalement, le fait de travailler à faible intensité est nécessaire pour les applications futures de notre montage. On a mis beaucoup d'efforts afin de produire un faisceau de GSH stable avec le moins de bruit possible. Il est important de connaître les différents facteurs qui sont capables d'influencer notre faisceau harmonique. Plusieurs tests ont été effectués afin de voir sous quelles conditions on peut minimiser l'effet de ceux-ci. L'exactitude des faisceaux de second harmonique que l'on présente dans cette thèse est optimisée pour les conditions expérimentales dans lesquelles on travaille. 1Malgré le fait qu'en réalité il s'agisse plutôt de la première harmonique et pour des raisons historiques, nous continuons d'utiliser le jargon actuel « génération du second harmonique » et l'acronyme correspondant « GHS»."--Sommaire.

En particulier, la propriété de cohérence de ce processus est étudiée en détail. En effet, en raison de la parité du processus SHG, cette cohérence est perdue dans les liquides. Ces études portent ainsi sur plusieurs géométries afin d'accéder aux réponses de volume et de surface. Les avantages d'une méthode combinée sont aussi discutés. Dans une première partie, la configuration classique de la Diffusion Hyper Rayleigh (acronyme anglais HRS pour Hyper Rayleigh Scattering ou SHS Second harmonic scattering) est utilisée pour l'étude de systèmes simples comme les solvants purs. Cette étude porte en particulier sur les méthodes de normalisation des hyperpolarisabilités moléculaires. Une voie alternative est proposée basée sur l'introduction d'une section efficace HRS ou SHS. Par la suite, les effets liés aux ordres non linéaires supérieurs sont démontrés et interprétés, ceux-ci pouvant altérer les valeurs absolues qui peuvent être mesurées.La seconde partie porte sur l'introduction de plusieurs améliorations dans les mesures HRS ou SHS. En particulier, l'évolution vers des géométries non conventionnelles s'éloignant de la géométrie standard ainsi que sur des évolutions permettant d'accéder aux aspects dynamiques sont proposées. Des expériences sont réalisées sur des systèmes simples comme les solvants purs, des composés moléculaires et des nanoparticules, tous présentant des spécificités propres. Cette partie finit sur l'exploration des systèmes aléatoires diffusants et les problèmes associés. Enfin, dans une dernière partie, la réponse HRS ou SHS de solutions aqueuses de sels est discutée. Les mesures portent plus particulièrement sur une étude comparée des aspects cohérents et incohérents et les propriétés qu'il est possible de mesurer dans ces systèmes.

Book excerpt: Ce manuscrit présente le rayonnement de second harmonique provenant de plusieurs milieux diélectriques allant de la réponse interfaciale à la réponse volumique. Ce travail de thèse constitue une première étape dans le but d'étudier une bulle de savon dans un piège optique par génération de second harmonique. Deux axes de recherche sont ainsi explorés : d'une part l'étude de la génération de second harmonique sur deux tensioactifs le TTAB et le SDS, constituants de base d'une bulle de savon, et de l'autre l'élaboration d'un nouveau dispositif expérimental permettant d'allier un piège optique à une excitation de second harmonique par un laser femtoseconde. Dans un premier temps, on explicite le montage optique reposant sur le principe d'un microscope confocal inversé et les mesures associées de la réponse harmonique d'interface air/verre et air/eau. Dans un second temps, on s'intéresse comme objet modèle, en lieu et place de la bulle, à une microparticule de silice. Ainsi, on commence par analyser sa réponse harmonique en microscopie non linéaire quand celle-ci se trouve déposée sur une matrice de verre. L'étude de cet objet met en avant l'interdépendance entre les aspects d'optique linéaire mesurés à la longueur d'onde fondamentale et l'intensité harmonique mesurée. Par la suite, cette microsphère est placée au sein du piège optique réalisé par un second faisceau. Malgré la faible taille et la symétrie de la particule diélectrique, on parvient à mettre en évidence la réponse harmonique d'une particule unique piégée. Enfin, dans une dernière partie, on s'intéresse à caractériser la génération de second harmonique pour des solutions savonneuses, première étape dans la réalisation d'une bulle. Les mesures de diffusion de second harmonique en volume pour des solutions de TTAB et SDS de diverses concentrations montrent un comportement similaire et une singularité lors du passage de la concentration micellaire critique. Lors de l'étude du signal de second harmonique à l'interface air/eau savonneuse en revanche, on mesure des comportements différents pour des tensioactifs anioniques et cationiques, provenant de la charge de surface et de l'orientation de l'eau sous-jacente.
