Book excerpt: Advanced machine learning combined with widespread, publicly available, airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data has great potential to automate the extraction and classification of landforms and 17th-early 20th century land use features preserved under forest canopy throughout the northeast US landscape. Previous studies have shown that stone walls, house foundations and relict charcoal hearths (RCHs) stand out clearly in derivative LiDAR digital elevation model (DEM) products such as slope and hillshade maps, but to date, mapping has been mainly carried out by on screen digitization. In this study, a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm was employed to extract relict charcoal hearth features from LiDAR data. With the application of CNN algorithms on LiDAR based slope maps and edge detection rasters, the network was successfully able to identify locations likely to be RCHs. The model results were further refined using object-based segmentation and image analysis methods, and compared with a dataset of manual digitized RCHs in 5 test area that cover a range of landscape types (steep terrain, rough terrain, lower gradient valleys and wetlands, developed, and forested). The CNN approach offers value in speed and ease and performed best when applied to forested hillslopes >10 degrees and areas lacking an overprint of mid to late 20th century development. Overall, the results of this study offers a unique insight into mapping past land use activity anywhere LiDAR data exists and the landscape experienced similar land use change during the 17th-20th centuries.

Compared to traditional ground surveys and aerial photogrammetry, mobile laser scanning (MLS) has great potential for rapid acquisition of high-density and high-accuracy three-dimensional (3D) point clouds covering roadways. Such MLS point clouds can be used to generate high-accuracy DTMs in a cost-effective fashion. However, the large-volume, mixed-density and irregular-distribution of MLS points, as well as the complexity of the roadway environment, make DTM generation a very challenging task. In addition, most available software packages were originally developed for handling airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds, which cannot be directly used to process MLS point clouds. Therefore, methods and software tools to automatically generate DTMs along roads are urgently needed for transportation users. This thesis presents an applicable workflow to generate DTM from MLS point clouds. The entire strategy of DTM generation was divided into two main parts: removing non-ground points and interpolating ground points into gridded DTMs. First, a voxel-based upward growing algorithm was developed to effectively and accurately remove non-ground points. Then through a comparative study on four interpolation algorithms, namely Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Nearest Neighbour, Linear, and Natural Neighbours interpolation algorithms, the IDW interpolation algorithm was finally used to generate gridded DTMs due to its higher accuracy and higher computational efficiency. The obtained results demonstrated that the voxel-based upward growing algorithm is suitable for areas without steep terrain features. The average overall accuracy, correctness, and completeness values of this algorithm were 0.975, 0.980, and 0.986, respectively. In some cases, the overall accuracy can exceed 0.990. The results demonstrated that the semi-automated DTM generation method developed in this thesis was able to create DTMs with a centimetre-level grid size and 10 cm vertical accuracy using the MLS point clouds.

Selected areas of point cloud LiDAR data collected from Honduras in 2008 was used to produce DEMs with varying densities to show the effects of lower resolution LiDAR data. An IDL code was utilized to reduce the selected LiDAR point cloud data to 90%, 66%, 50%, 30%, 10%, 5%, 3%, 1%, 0.5%, 0.3%, 0.1%, 0.05%, 0.03%, and 0.01% of its original density to obtain lower resolution data sets. The software Quick Terrain Modeler (QTM) and its ILAP Bare Earth Extractor Plug-in was used to generate DEMs from the varying point cloud density data sets and the software ENVI was used to perform DEM analysis. It was found that LiDAR point cloud density data set of at least 0.6 points per square meter is necessary to generate an accurate Digital Elevation Model for the test environment.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in remote-sensing technologies and analysis methods, specifically airborne-LiDAR elevation data and corresponding geographical information system (GIS) tools, present new opportunities for automated and rapid fluvial geomorphic (FGM) assessments that can cover entire watersheds. In this thesis, semi-automated GIS tools are used to extract channel centerlines and bankfull width values from digital elevation models (DEM) for five New England watersheds. For each study site, four centerlines are mapped. LiDAR and NED lines are delineated using ArcGIS spatial analyst tools with high-resolution (1-m to 2-m) LiDAR DEMs or USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) DEMs, respectively. Resampled LiDAR decreases LiDAR DEM resolution and then runs spatial analyst tools. National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) lines are mapped by the USGS. All mapped lines are compared to centerlines delineated from photography and LiDAR DEMs. Bankfull widths at each site are determined through three methods. Regional regression equations are applied using variables derived from LiDAR and NED DEMs separately, producing two sets of width results. Additionally, the Hydrogeomorphological Geoprocessing Toolset (HGM) is used to extract widths from LiDAR data. Widths are also estimated visually from aerial photos and LiDAR DEMs. Widths measured directly in the field or derived from field-data are used as a baseline for comparison. I find that with a minimal amount of preprocessing, specifically through DEM resampling, LiDAR data can be used to model a channel that is highly correlated with the shape and location of the mapped channel. NED-derived channels model the mapped channel shape with even greater accuracy, and model the channel location only minimally less accurately. No tool used in this study accurately extracted bankfull width values, but analysis of LiDAR data by the HGM toolset did capture details that could not be resolved using regression equations. Overall, I conclude that automated, computerized LiDAR interpretation needs to improve significantly for the expense of data collection to be cost-effective at a watershed scale.

A DEM can be represented as a raster (a grid of squares) or as a vector based triangular irregular network (TIN). DEMs are commonly built using remote sensing techniques, but they may also be built from land surveying. DEMs are used often in geographic information systems, and are the most common basis for digitally-produced relief maps. The terrain surface can be described as compromising of two different elements; random and systematic. The random (stochastic) elements are the continuous surfaces with continuously varying relief. It would take an endless number of points to describe exactly the random terrain shapes, but these can be described in practice with a network of point. It is usual to use a network that creates sloping triangles or regular quadrants. This book examines how the methods and data sources used to generate DEMs and calculate land surface parameters have changed over the past 25 years. The primary goal is to describe the state-of-the-art for a typical digital terrain modeling workflow that starts with data capture, continues with data preprocessing and DEM generation, and concludes with the calculation of one or more primary and secondary land surface parameters.
