It enhances considerably the usefulness of the method of quasilinearization which has proved to be very effective in several areas of investigation and in applications. Further it includes the well-known monotone iterative technique as a special case. Audience: Researchers, industrial and engineering scientists.

Book excerpt: A monotone iterative technique is used to obtain monotone approximate solutions that converge to the solution of nonlinear problems of partial differential equations of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type. This volume describes that technique, which has played a valuable role in unifying a variety of nonlinear problems, particularly when combined with the quasilinearization method. The first part of this monograph describes the general methodology using the classic approach, while the second part develops the same basic ideas via the variational technique. The text provides a useful and timely reference for applied scientists, engineers and numerical analysts.

Book excerpt: In this Supplement we have collected the invited and contributed talks pre sented at the XVIII European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, organised by the Jozef Stefan Institute and the University of Ljubljana, Slove nia. The Conference, sponsored by the European Physical Society, took place at the lakeside resort of Bled from 8 to 14 September, 2002. This meeting was a part of the series of European Few-Body Conferences, previously held in Evora/Portugal (2000), Autrans/France (1998), Peniscola/Spain (1995), ... Our aim was to emphasise, to a larger extent than at previous Conferences, the interdisciplinarity of research fields of the Few-Body community. To pro mote a richer exchange of ideas, we therefore strived to avoid parallel sessions as much as possible. On the other hand, to promote the participation of young scientists who we feel will eventually shape the future of Few-Body Physics, we wished to give almost all attendees the opportunity to speak.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MA THEMA TICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Nonlinear Integral Equations presents several extremely fruitful methods for the analysis of systems and nonlinear integral equations. They include: fixed point methods (the Schauder and Leray-Schauder principles), variational methods (direct variational methods and mountain pass theorems), and iterative methods (the discrete continuation principle, upper and lower solutions techniques, Newton's method and the generalized quasilinearization method). Many important applications for several classes of integral equations and, in particular, for initial and boundary value problems, are presented to complement the theory. Special attention is paid to the existence and localization of solutions in bounded domains such as balls and order intervals. The presentation is essentially self-contained and leads the reader from classical concepts to current ideas and methods of nonlinear analysis.

Book excerpt: This textbook is devoted to the study of some simple but representative nonlinear boundary value problems by topological methods. The approach is elementary, with only a few model ordinary differential equations and applications, chosen in such a way that the student may avoid most of the technical difficulties and focus on the application of topological methods. Only basic knowledge of general analysis is needed, making the book understandable to non-specialists. The main topics in the study of boundary value problems are present in this text, so readers with some experience in functional analysis or differential equations may also find some elements that complement and enrich their tools for solving nonlinear problems. In comparison with other texts in the field, this one has the advantage of a concise and informal style, thus allowing graduate and undergraduate students to enjoy some of the beauties of this interesting branch of mathematics. Exercises and examples are included throughout the book, providing motivation for the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Solution Methods for Boundary Value Problems is an extensively revised, new English language edition of the original 2011 Russian language work, which provides deep analysis methods and exact solutions for mathematical physicists seeking to model germane linear and nonlinear boundary problems. Current analytical solutions of equations within mathematical physics fail completely to meet boundary conditions of the second and third kind, and are wholly obtained by the defunct theory of series. These solutions are also obtained for linear partial differential equations of the second order. They do not apply to solutions of partial differential equations of the first order and they are incapable of solving nonlinear boundary value problems. Analytical Solution Methods for Boundary Value Problems attempts to resolve this issue, using quasi-linearization methods, operational calculus and spatial variable splitting to identify the exact and approximate analytical solutions of three-dimensional non-linear partial differential equations of the first and second order. The work does so uniquely using all analytical formulas for solving equations of mathematical physics without using the theory of series. Within this work, pertinent solutions of linear and nonlinear boundary problems are stated. On the basis of quasi-linearization, operational calculation and splitting on spatial variables, the exact and approached analytical solutions of the equations are obtained in private derivatives of the first and second order. Conditions of unequivocal resolvability of a nonlinear boundary problem are found and the estimation of speed of convergence of iterative process is given. On an example of trial functions results of comparison of the analytical solution are given which have been obtained on suggested mathematical technology, with the exact solution of boundary problems and with the numerical solutions on well-known methods. - Discusses the theory and analytical methods for many differential equations appropriate for applied and computational mechanics researchers - Addresses pertinent boundary problems in mathematical physics achieved without using the theory of series - Includes results that can be used to address nonlinear equations in heat conductivity for the solution of conjugate heat transfer problems and the equations of telegraph and nonlinear transport equation - Covers select method solutions for applied mathematicians interested in transport equations methods and thermal protection studies - Features extensive revisions from the Russian original, with 115+ new pages of new textual content

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of modern society are both complex and inter-disciplinary. Despite the - parent diversity of problems, however, often tools developed in one context are adaptable to an entirely different situation. For example, consider the well known Lyapunov’s second method. This interesting and fruitful technique has gained increasing signi?cance and has given decisive impetus for modern development of stability theory of discrete and dynamic system. It is now recognized that the concept of Lyapunov function and theory of diff- ential inequalities can be utilized to investigate qualitative and quantitative properties of a variety of nonlinear problems. Lyapunov function serves as a vehicle to transform a given complicated system into a simpler comparison system. Therefore, it is enough to study the properties of the simpler system to analyze the properties of the complicated system via an appropriate Lyapunov function and the comparison principle. It is in this perspective, the present monograph is dedicated to the investigation of the theory of causal differential equations or differential equations with causal operators, which are nonanticipative or abstract Volterra operators. As we shall see in the ?rst chapter, causal differential equations include a variety of dynamic systems and consequently, the theory developed for CDEs (Causal Differential Equations) in general, covers the theory of several dynamic systems in a single framework.
