Tendo em vista a dificuldade de se fazer um modelo analítico que represente bem os protocolos existentes, utilizam-se, normalmente, formulações simplificadas para o cálculo dos parâmetros desejados, ou recorre-se a um modelo de simulação, que necessita de maior tempo de computação pra obtenção dos resultados.Com o objetivo de se obter uma análise mais precisa dos protocolos de múltiplo acesso utilizados em redes de dados foram desenvolvidos modelos a partir de um método proposto por S.M. Meerkov e J.T. Lim. estes modelos consideram estações com buffers transmitindo mensagens que possuem um ou mais pacotes em canais com retardo, utilizando a distribuição de probabilidades do tamanho destas mensagens. É proposta também a retirada da hipótese simplificadora usualmente feita em análises envolvendo o protocolo ALOHA- Segmentado, de que a primeira transmissão de cada pacote é também feita com retardo. Esta metodologia é novamente aplicada para modelar um protocolo híbrido, que combina transmissões utilizando o modo S-ALOHA e um modo de reserva. São apresentados, também, modelos e resultados de simulação para validação dos modelos analíticos propostos.

It is assumed that only one message at a time can be transmitted successfully over the common channel. The author derives a local optimality condition for synchronous multiple access protocols, and show that many known protocols are special cases of this condition. Included a survey of much of the recent work on infinite population tree algorithms that use the history of channel activity to carry out short-range dynamic scheduling. A novel approach is presented for deriving upper bounds on the maximum stable throughput with finite average delay for infinite population protocols. Bounds are found for the case of arbitrarily complex algorithms, and for the restricted (but reasonable) class of protocols that obey a degenerate intersection property. This latter class is quite interesting, being a slight generalization of first-come first-served that includes all currently proposed protocols. The model is extended to include multiple access protocols aided by a partial reservation channel. Particular emphasis is placed on multiple access in the context of local networks.

The message output from any transmitter is independent from the message outputs from any other transmitters. Shannon's coding theorem shows that, for a conventional communication system with one transmitter and one receiver, there exists a capacity C for a given channel, and that communications can be achieved with an arbitrarily small probability of error for any rate R smaller than C. The converse to the coding theorem shows that for any rate R greater than C, it is impossible to make the probability of error arbitrarily small. In the report, the author determines a set of rates, the capacity region, which allow each transmitter to communicate with the receiver with an arbitrarily small probability of error. It is shown that for any set of rates outside the capacity region, the probability of error cannot be made arbitrarily small. In other words, the author extends Shannon's coding theorem and its converse to a coding theorem and a converse for multiple access channels. (Author).

Many MAC protocols for wireless networks proposed or implemented to date are based on collision-avoidance handshakes between sender and receiver. The key objective of collision-avoidance handshakes is reducing or eliminating the collision of data packets from a source at any given receiver due to interference from packets from other sources. In the vast majority of these protocols, including the IEEE 802.11 standard, the handshake is sender-initiated, in that the sender asks the receiver for permission to transmit using a short control packet, and transmits only after the receiver sends a short clear-to-send notification. There are two main objectives in this work: analyze the effect of reversing the collision-avoidance handshake as a way to improve the performance of MAC protocols under any conditions in the network, and design MAC protocols that provide correct floor acquisition without carrier sensing or code pre-assignment. We show that receiver-initiated collision-avoidance MAC protocols not only outperform any sender-initiated ones, but also guarantee collision-free data transmission and seamless support for mobility by using simple, low-cost wireless radios. We study the effect of persistent carrier sensing in receiver- as well as sender-initiated MAC protocols. We extend our work to multi-channel radios and introduce novel collision-avoidance MAC protocols that eliminate the need for carrier sensing and code pre-assignment, and improve the utilization of the medium in the presence of unicast, multicast and broadcast traffic.
