Sherman gave President Lincoln the city of Savannah and paved the way for the end of the Civil War. General Sherman's Christmas opens on Thanksgiving Day 1864. Sherman was relentlessly pushing his troops nearly three hundred miles across Georgia in his "March to the Sea," to reach Savannah just days before Christmas. His methodical encroachment of the city from all sides eventually convinced Confederate general W. J. Hardee, who had refused a demand for surrender of his troops, to slip away in darkness across an improvised causeway and escape to South Carolina. In freezing rain and through terrifying fog, equipment-burdened soldiers crossed a hastily built pontoon bridge spanning the mile-wide Savannah River. Three days before Christmas, the mayor, Richard Arnold, surrendered the city, now populated mostly by women, children, and the slaves who had not fled. General Sherman then telegraphed to Abraham Lincoln, "I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah with 150 heavy guns & plenty of ammunition & also about 25.000 bales of cotton." The fight for Savannah took place as its inhabitants were anxiously preparing for Christmas. Weintraub explores how Christmas was traditionally fÊted in the South and what remained of the holiday to celebrate during the waning last full year of the war. Illustrated with striking period prints, General Sherman's Christmas captures the voices of soldiers and civilians on both sides of the conflict, as they neared the end of a long war.

Book excerpt: After the death of her adopted mother, a young woman spends Christmas Eve,1888 seeking to find her birth mother but discovers instead a multi-layered tale of family mysteries and touched souls. This is the plot of Sherman's Angels: A Christmas Story, by Gary J. Grieco. Gary is a Civil War history buff and he found inspiration for this novella while reading a first-hand account of Sherman's March to the Sea. "I stumbled across an obscure reference to an unusual event that occurred to a company of Union soldiers," said Mr. Grieco. "No, it wasn't cherubs descending from the sky - it was far more down to earth than that! Now I'm totally fascinated by the war's oddities, more so than the strategies and battles, and as such I could not get this little bit of quirky history out of my mind. I thought about it for two years while slowly weaving a fictional story around the historical facts. The result is a Christmas story that takes place from midday Christmas Eve to early Christmas morning, with flashbacks to the Civil War. It is a story of war, love and healing."

Book excerpt: The "March to the Sea." It shocked Georgians from Atlanta to Savannah. In the late autumn of 1864, as General William Tecumseh Sherman's troops cut a four-week-long path of terror through Georgia, he accomplished his objective: to destroy civilian morale and with it their support for the Confederate cause. His actions elicited a passionate reaction. Sherman became the ruthless personification of evil, an arch-villain who made war on innocent women, children, and old men. But does the Savannah Campaign deserve the reputation it has been given? And was Sherman truly this brutal? In War and Ruin: William T. Sherman and the Savannah Campaign, Anne J. Bailey examines this event and investigates just how much truth is behind the popular historical notions. Bailey contends that the psychological horror rather than the actual physical damage-which was not as devastating as believed-led to the wilting of Southern morale. This dissolution of resolve helped lead to ultimate Confederate defeat as well as to the development of Sherman's infamous reputation. War and Ruin looks at the "March to the Sea" from its inception in Atlanta to its culmination in Savannah. This is a chronicle of not just the campaign itself, but also a revealing description of how the people of Georgia were affected. War and Ruin brilliantly combines military history and human interest to achieve a convincing portrayal of what really happened in Sherman's epic effort to smash Confederate spirit in Georgia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • Drawing on a wealth of research, this "fascinating" book (The New York Times Book Review) charts the invention of our current Yuletide traditions, from St. Nicholas to the Christmas tree and, perhaps most radically, the practice of giving gifts to children. Anyone who laments the excesses of Christmas might consider the Puritans of colonial Massachusetts: they simply outlawed the holiday. The Puritans had their reasons, since Christmas was once an occasion for drunkenness and riot, when poor "wassailers extorted food and drink from the well-to-do. In this intriguing and innovative work of social history, Stephen Nissenbaum rediscovers Christmas's carnival origins and shows how it was transformed, during the nineteenth century, into a festival of domesticity and consumerism. Bursting with detail, filled with subversive readings of such seasonal classics as "A Visit from St. Nicholas” and A Christmas Carol, The Battle for Christmas captures the glorious strangeness of the past even as it helps us better understand our present.

Book excerpt: This award-winning study presents an engaging account of the attempt at reconstruction that occurred in the Sea Islands of South Carolina during the beginning of the Civil War. Serving as a kind of dress rehearsal for Reconstruction, the Port Royal Experiment not only helped to shape federal policy for Reconstruction, but it also influenced the nation by adding to the initial war aim of the Union, the eventual commitment to freedom, and the still-unfulfilled commitment to equality.

Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling biography of one of America’s most storied military figures. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s 1864 burning of Atlanta solidified his legacy as a ruthless leader. Evolving from a spirited student at West Point, Sherman became a general who fought in some of the Civil War’s most decisive campaigns—Shiloh, Vicksburg, Atlanta—until finally, seeking a swift ending to the war’s horrendous casualties, he devastated southern resources on his famous March to the Sea across the Carolinas. Later, as general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, Sherman relentlessly paved the way west during the Indian wars. James Lee McDonough’s fresh insight reveals a man tormented by fears that history would pass him by and that he would miss his chance to serve his country. Drawing on years of research, McDonough delves into Sherman’s dramatic personal life, including his strained relationship with his wife, his personal debts, and his young son’s death. The result is a remarkable, illuminating portrait of an American icon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nikki Stoddard Schofield is the author of three previously-published Civil War novels. Bondage and Freedom, A Civil War Romance is about guerrilla warfare in East Tennessee with a Yankee nurse, Lydia, who is suffering from post traumatic stress, and Brinton Good, a Confederate captain who does his military duties while also caring for her. Alas Richmond, A Civil War Romance, is about Verity, a Southern belle, and Giles, an Englishman and a Union spy, during the final days of the capital of the Confederacy. Treason Afoot, A Civil War Romance, tells the story of the Indianapolis Treason Trials in 1864 in Ms. Schofield’s hometown. Emeline Tanner and Jay Hadley live through those tumultuous times, which resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Ex Parte Milligan. Nikki is currently doing research on her next novel, Confederates in Canada. Ms. Schofield is the mother of two sons, Rob who lives with his wife Vicki in Ohio, and Gaven who lives with his wife Christine and three daughters in Virginia. She has five granddaughters, Bridget, Stephanie, Abigail, Gabrielle, and Lily; one grandson, Nicholas; one great-grandson, Gonzalo, and one great-granddaughter, Bella. From 1974 to 2012, Nikki was the law librarian at the Indianapolis office of Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP, formerly Bingham Summers Welsh & Spilman. Upon entering phased retirement, she took a second job as the Staff Genealogist at Crown Hill Cemetery, where she works on Fridays. Also at Crown Hill, the third largest private cemetery in the country, Nikki serves as a tour guide specializing in the Civil War personalities. In October 2011, Nikki began volunteering one day a week at the Indiana State Library, Manuscript and Rare Book Division, where she creates finding aids available on the Internet. Many of the items Nikki summarizes in these finding aids are from Civil War collections. This work enables her to read what people of that era wrote and thought, thus providing authenticity to her novels. A member of Speedway Baptist Church, Ms. Schofield is an ordained deacon, moderator of the business meetings, adult Sunday school teacher, and assistant treasurer. For five years, she served as one of two representatives from the North Central region on the Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship with which her church is affiliated. As president of the Indianapolis Civil War Round Table for two terms, Nikki was elected for a third term in May 2013. She has also served the club as director for the annual trips, secretary, and newsletter editor. Ms. Schofield gave first-person presentations of Civil War women including Belle Boyd, Confederate spy; Mary Surratt, Lincoln conspirator; Mary Ann Morrison Jackson, wife of Stonewall Jackson; Helen Pitts Douglass, the second wife of orator and abolitionist Frederick Douglass; Lucinda Morton, the wife of Indiana’s Civil War Governor; Susan Slater, Confederate spy; and several others. Ms. Schofield is a member of the Baptist History & Heritage Society as well as a member of the Fellowship of Baptist Historians
