Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important new interpretation of how religious change shaped American cultural identity in the early republic.” —Journal of American History Northern New England, a rugged landscape dotted with transient settlements, posed challenges to the traditional town church in the wake of the American Revolution. Using the methods of spatial geography, Shelby M. Balik examines how migrants adapted their understanding of religious community and spiritual space to survive in the harsh physical surroundings of the region. The notions of boundaries, place, and identity they developed became the basis for spreading New England’s deeply rooted spiritual culture, even as it opened the way to a new evangelical age. “I strongly recommend Balik’s book for those studying colonial religious landscapes and heritages not only in New England, but in the nineteenth-century religious diasporas that swept the continent with varying mixes of European colonials and also African and Asian heritages.” —Stanley D. Brunn, University of Kentucky “In this beautifully written and richly researched work, Shelby Balik shows how the travels of early nineteenth century Methodists, Universalists and freewill Baptist itinerant missionaries and congregations recreated the geography of New England Protestantism, setting in motion (literally) a tension between religious rootedness and religious uprootedness, center and periphery, that endures to today. Early American religious history in Balik’s retelling of it is one of bodies in constant movement in and out and around the city on the hill. The delight Balik takes in maps and journeys is infectious. This is a wonderful addition to American religious historiography.” —Robert Orsi, Northwestern University

Book excerpt: Gilmore (history, Stockton State College) is concerned with the half century following independence, during which rural New England changed from a traditional agricultural region into a commercialized one. He examines the links among cultural, social, and economic aspects of this transformation, an ingredient of which was an ideological commitment to reading and learning. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work contains a collection of legislative petitions presented to the General Assembly of Virginia by residents of Kentucky County when it was a part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The topics that make up the subject matter of the petitions may be summed as follows: The system of landholding, the establishment of courts, the organization of a militia, the organization of the community into counties and towns, the perfecting of a medium of exchange, the inspection of tobacco, the foundation of an educational system, the status of slavery in the western country, and the movement toward separation from Virginia. The list of names attached to the petitions--here printed separately and in alphabetical order--is of a paramount interest to the genealogist as it embodies the names of approximately 5,000 of Kentucky's earliest settlers. Many of these are names that will be met with in no other source, since they occur, for the most part, prior to the keeping of public records. Altogether, the names on the petitions appear to be representative of the ethnic composition of the pioneer population of Kentucky.

He offers descriptions and location aids for those works, and he directs users to reviews of the books. He also suggests which works in the field have had significant scholarly impact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh overall account of organised antislavery by focusing on the active minority of abolutionists throughout the country. The analysis of their culture of reform demonstrates the way in which alliances of diverse religious groups roused public opinion and influenced political leaders. The resulting definition of the distinctive `reform mentality' links antislavery to other efforts at moral and social improvement and highlights its contradictory relations to the social effects of industrialization and the growth of liberalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age of British abolitionism came into consolidated strength in 1787-88 with the first mass campaign against the slave trade and ended just half a century later in 1838 with a mass petition movement against Negro Apprenticeship. Drescher focuses on this critical fifty-year period, when the people of the Empire effectively pressured and eventually altered national policy. Presenting a major reassessment of the roots, nature, and significance of Britain's successful struggle against slavery, he illuminates a novel turn in the history of antislavery, when for the first time, the most effective agents in the abolition process were non-slave masses, including working men and women. This not only set Britain off from ancient Rome, medieval western Europe, and early modern Russia, but, in scale and duration, it distinguished Britain from its 19th-century continental European counterparts as well. Viewing British abolitionism against the backdrop of larger national and international events, this provocative study challenges readers to look anew at the politics of slavery and social change in a prominent era of British history.
