Book excerpt: Throughout the following pages the threads of history and fiction are closely interwoven. The plot of the story is laid in the dark and stormy days of 1861, amid the waving trees and blue grass fields of Central Kentucky. No State wept more bitter tears at the commencement of the dreadful struggle between the North and the South than Kentucky. With loving arms she tried to encircle both, and when she failed, in the language of one of her most eloquent sons, "So intense was her agony that her great heart burst in twain." Resolutions of neutrality did little good. Sympathies and beliefs are not controlled by resolutions or laws, and never can be. Kentucky was divided into two great hostile camps. The Secession element was very active, and the Union men saw the State slowly but surely drifting into the arms of the Confederacy. Then it was that Lieutenant William Nelson of the United States navy, a well-known and very[Pg 8] popular Kentuckian, asked the privilege of raising ten regiments of Kentucky troops. The request was granted, and Nelson at once commenced his task. Only a man of iron determination and the highest courage would have dared to undertake such a work. He became the object of the fiercest hatred and opposition,—even from many who professed to love the Union. But he never wavered in his purpose, and established a camp for his recruits at Dick Robinson, a few miles east of Danville. Here it is that the story opens, and Nelson is the chief historic figure—a figure with many imperfections, yet it can be said of him as it was of King James V., in "The Lady of the Lake": "On his bold visage middle age Had slightly pressed its signet sage, Yet had not quenched the open truth And fiery vehemence of youth; Forward and frolic glee was there, The will to do, the soul to dare." All military movements chronicled in the story are historically correct.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Major General William "Bull" Nelson played a formative role in the Union's success in Kentucky and the Western theater in the CIvil War... David C. Clark presents a long-overdue examination of an irascible officer, his numerous accomplishments, and his grim fate ... During September of 1862, in a crime that was never prosecuted, fellow Union general Jefferson C. Davis shot and killed Nelson after an argument. Clark explores this remarkable exception in military law, arguing that while the fact of the murder was indisputable, prosecution of the murder went by the wayside because a public angered by the arrogant behavior of Federal officers generally approved of Davis having dispatched an abusive tyrant ... This comprehensive study -- the first biography of Nelson -- eliminates previous misconceptions about a well-known yet misunderstood Civil War general"--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: In 1897, five years after he won the Medal of Honor, General Nelson A. Miles published his memoirs, often cited and now made widely available in this two-volume Bison Book edition. While relating his own colorful adventures, General Miles also ranges over time and space, taking into account fur traders, trail blazers, gold seekers, and missionaries. The first volume described his service in the Civil War and his campaigns against the Indians on the northern plains. Volume 2 follows General Miles to Washington Territory, where he com-mands the Department of Columbia, and finally to the Southwest, where he succeeds General George Crook in directing the fight against the Apaches. The pursuit of Geronimo is one of the many subjects illustrated here by Frederic Remington. In his introduction to the second volume Robert Wooster notes the importance of this memoir as a document on the Indian wars, extremely revealing of the character of a difficult but competent general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable military careers in American history, the life of Nelson A. Miles encompasses the sweep of the American Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the Spanish American War. As a college-educated volunteer officer in the Civil War, Miles fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and the Wilderness, among other important campaigns, and was wounded four times. A major-general at only 26, he was a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions at Chancellorsville. As a commander in the Indian Wars, he had admiration and respect for many of the Indians he met, despite carrying out a ferocious war to subdue them. Under his command, the massacre at Wounded Knee occurred. Miles was not present, criticized the officer at the scene, and lobbied later for compensation to the survivors. He had face-to-face negotiations with Sitting Bull shortly after Custer's defeat at the Little Bighorn, and later met with Geronimo (accepting his surrender), Chief Joseph, Natchez, and other leading Native Americans. Miles eventually retired as Commander of the Army in 1903. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: This is a facsimile reprint of the very first Boy Scouts Handbook, complete with the wonderful vintage advertisements that accompanied the original 1911 edition, now in full color. Over 40 million copies of this book have been distributed since its first publication nearly 100 years ago. The original Boy Scouts Handbook standardized American scouting and emphasized the virtues and qualifications for scouting, delineating what the American Boy Scouts declared was needed to be a “well-developed, well-informed boy.” The book includes information on the organization of scouting, signs and signaling, camping, scouting games, and a description of several scouting honors. Scouts past and present will be fascinated to see how scouting has changed, as well as what has stayed the same over the years.
