Book excerpt: One of the most important Confederate generals, Joseph Wheeler fought initially in the Western campaigns. He was recognized for fighting well at Shiloh and Wheeler burned the bridges over the Tuscumbia River to cover the Confederate withdrawal at the Battle of Corinth.Starting Confederate service as a lieutenant, he was quickly promoted, wounded twice, and finally promoted to major-general. This book covers in detail his campaigns with the Army of Tennessee. He has the distinction of having served the American Civil War against the federal government and later for the United States Army in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars. He is one of the few Confederate officers buried on the grounds of the former estate of Robert E. Lee--Arlington National Cemetery.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Raid of the Confederate Cavalry Through Central Tennessee, in October, 1863, Commanded by General Joseph Wheeler: A Paper Read Before the Ohio Commandery of the Loyal Legion, April 1, 1908 Two days after the battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19th and 20th, 1863, the 2d Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland, commanded by General George Crook, entered Chattanooga, forded the Tennessee River and went into bivouac opposite the town. The Division crossed the Tennessee to the South, some distance below Stevenson. Alabama, September 2d, and had been in the saddle continuously for twenty days. The horses were much jaded and had great need of shoeing and rest. The troopers were worn out, uniforms, arms and equipments required repairs and renovating. We had not seen our wagon train for a month, and the officers, not having a change of clothing during the campaign, were neither comfortable nor presentable. It was hoped that we would at least get a few days rest, but we were doomed to disappointment, for in two days we were destined to start on another hard campaign, which up to that time had not had a parallel in the annals of the Cavalry service of that Army. The Division was composed of nine regiments of Cavalry and one Battery of Artillery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Composed almost entirely of Midwesterners and molded into a lean, skilled fighting machine by Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, the Army of the Tennessee marched directly into the heart of the Confederacy and won major victories at Shiloh and at the rebel strongholds of Vicksburg and Atlanta.Acclaimed historian Steven Woodworth has produced the first full consideration of this remarkable unit that has received less prestige than the famed Army of the Potomac but was responsible for the decisive victories that turned the tide of war toward the Union. The Army of the Tennessee also shaped the fortunes and futures of both Grant and Sherman, liberating them from civilian life and catapulting them onto the national stage as their triumphs grew. A thrilling account of how a cohesive fighting force is forged by the heat of battle and how a confidence born of repeated success could lead soldiers to expect “nothing but victory.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army of Tennessee was officially designated November 20, 1862. But that was not the beginning of the Confederate main fighting force in the Civil War's Western Theater. Before that date it was known as the Army of Mississippi (or the Army of the West), a command organized on March 5, with its area of operations between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains. That army was formed of the Army of Central Kentucky, the Army of Louisiana and elements of the Army of Pensacola, following the Confederate disaster at Fort Donelson. The force was led by a succession of commoners--P.G.T. Beauregard, Albert Sydney Johnston and Braxton Bragg--and had a series of defeats, from Shiloh to Corinth to Perryville, before winning a spectacular victory at Chickamauga. Based on the Official Records, this book details the often neglected army's organization, strength and casualties during its three year history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere in the annals of United States military history is there a more tragic, yet valorous, story than that of the Army of Tennessee. Unlike its companion fighting unit, the Army of Northern Virginia which was commanded throughout the Civil War by one of the great military figures of all time, Robert E. Lee, the history of the Army of Tennessee is one of ever-changing commanders, of bickering and wrangling among its leaders, and a discouraging succession of disappointments and might-have-beens.
