Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Assembly's Missionary Magazine, or Evangelical Intelligencer, for 1806, Vol. 2 Blair, who had established a useful and important seminary in Fag's Manor, in the county of Chester, in Pennsylvania. Here he pursued, during several years, first his classical, and afterwards his theological studies, under a man who was inferior to none, in the soundness of his understanding, and the penetration of his mind; who was a profound divine, and a most solemn and im pressive preacher. In Mr. Blair, besides an able instructor, and an excellent model of pulpit eloquence, he possessed the advantage of an admirable example of christian meekness, of ministerial diligence, and of that candour, liberality, and catholicism of senti ment towards those who differed from him in opinion, without dereliction of principle, which are among the most amiable fea tures of character that can adorn a disciple, and, especially, a mi nister of Christ. Under such instruction, and with such an exam ple continually before his eyes, Mr. Smith made great and rapid improvement both in classical and theological knowledge. By Mr. Blair he was much esteemed and beloved; and, in 17 50, was, in the same year, licensed to preach the gospel, and married to a younger sister of his preceptor. This lady was distinguished by a sound understanding, uncommon sweetness of disposition, and sincere piety; and was an excellent assistant to him in the educa tion of their common children. To these they both devoted much time, to cultivate in them the habits of virtue and religion, and to infuse into their minds, at the first opening of their powers, the principles of a warm and rational piety. In his absence, she al ways conducted the daily devotions of the family with a dignity which insured their respect, and with an unsfi'ected fervour which could not fail to touch their hearts. By this lady Dr. Smith had seven children, two of whom died young, two embraced the pro fession of medicine, and three entered, at an early age, on the sacred ministry of the gospel, and have since filled some of the most respectable stations in the church, as well as in the literary institutions of this country. By a second marriage, with the worthy and respectable widow of the Rev. W. Ramsay, he left one daughter, who, at his death, was very young. Book Synopsis From Huronia to Wendakes by : Thomas Peace
Download or read book From Huronia to Wendakes written by Thomas Peace and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first contact with Europeans to the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the War of 1812, the Wendat peoples have been an intrinsic part of North American history. Although the story of these peoples—also known as Wyandot or Wyandotte—has been woven into the narratives of European-Native encounters, colonialism, and conquest, the Wendats’ later experiences remain largely missing from history. From Huronia to Wendakes seeks to fill this gap, countering the common impression that these peoples disappeared after 1650, when they were driven from their homeland Wendake Ehen, also known as Huronia, in modern-day southern Ontario. This collection of essays brings together lesser-known historical accounts of the Wendats from their mid-seventeenth-century dispersal through their establishment of new homelands, called Wendakes, in Quebec, Michigan, Ontario, Kansas, and Oklahoma. What emerges from these varied perspectives is a complex picture that encapsulates both the cultural resilience and the diversity of these peoples. Together, the essays reveal that while the Wendats, like all people, are ever-changing, their nations have developed adaptive strategies to maintain their predispersal culture in the face of such pressures as Christianity and colonial economies. Just as the Wendats have linked multiple Wendakes through migrations forced and voluntary, the various perspectives of these emerging scholars are knitted together by the shared purpose of filling in Wendat history beyond the seventeenth century. This approach, along with the authors’ collaboration with modern Wendat communities, has resulted in a rich and coherent narrative that in turn enriches our understanding of North American history.

Book Synopsis Salvation and the Savage by : Robert F. BerkhoferJr.
Download or read book Salvation and the Savage written by Robert F. BerkhoferJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great, pre-Civil War attempt of Protestant missionaries to Christianize Native Americans is found by Robert F. Berkofer, Jr. to be a significant point of contact with enduring lessons for American thought. The irony displayed by this relationship, he says, did not really lie in the disparity between Anglo-Saxon ideals and the actual treatment of first peoples but in the failure of all, including the missions, to see that both sides had ultimately behaved according to their cultural values. Using the records of missions to sixteen tribes in various regions of the United States, Berkofer has carefully followed the hopeful efforts of sixty-five years. The ultimate outcome, when the Civil War brought most of the missions to an end, was only a nominal conversion of Native Americans, despite the unflagging optimism of missionaries struggling against cultural barriers.
