Book excerpt: This volume 154 is the first comprehensive treatment of the genus Syntrichia in the Holarctic. Syntrichia (Pottiaceae, Bryophyta) is a genus with a large number of species existing on all continents. Some of the taxa are difficult to distinguish. Many names had to be reclassified taxonomically. The main focus of this work is on the species present in North America as those are often not well understood. Because the Holarctic part of Eurasia is connected to North America, the species of the entire extra-tropical Northern Hemisphere are studied. About 110 taxa are examined. The studies resulted in 34 species with 59 taxa of Syntrichia and three species which had to be assigned to other genera. Sixteen of the 59 taxa are new to science (five new species, four of them restricted to the Americas, one also existing in Eurasia; four other new taxa are restricted to North America, five to Eurasia, and two are present both in North America and in Eurasia). Three names previously treated as synonyms of other species are recognized as good species (one restricted to North America, two also in Eurasia). Twenty-four other names were designated as new synonyms for other taxa. In addition to the descriptions of taxa and an identification key, several characteristics (some of them new) are given that may be relevant to a division within the genus Syntrichia. This work is an important resource for bryologists specifically dealing with species of North America, but also of Europe and Asia. It is a great help for the identification of all taxa of Syntrichia in the Holarctic. It also serves as a basis for molecular-genetic studies on the genus Syntrichia and related genera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosses are a major component of the vegetation in ice-free coastal regions of Antarctica. They play an important role in the colonisation of ice-free terrain, accumulation of organic matter, release of organic exudates, and also provide a food and habitat resource for invertebrates. They serve as model organisms for physiological experiments designed to elucidate problems of plant cold tolerance and survival mechanisms and for monitoring biological responses to climate change. This Flora provides the first comprehensive description, with keys, of all known species and varieties of moss in the Antarctic biome. It has involved microscopic examination of around 10,000 specimens from Antarctica and, for comparison, from other continents. All species are illustrated by detailed line drawings, alongside information about their reproductive status, ecology, and distribution. This is an invaluable resource for bryologists worldwide, as well as to Antarctic botanists and other terrestrial biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moss genus Hennediella is taxonomically revised. A key, descriptions, illustrations, distribution data, LM and SEM photographs of the 15 species recognized are provided. A morphometric study of 226 specimens is carried out to test the most significant characters and a multivariate analysis is made for the Hennediella heimii group to distinguish patterns of morphological differentiation. Thirty-seven names are lectotypified and two epitypes designated. Hennediella serrulata and H. angustifolia are transferred to the genus Syntrichia. Desmatodon spelaeus, Hennediella oedipodioides, Pottia chubutensis and Syntrichia astoma are synonymyzed with H. heimii, and Pottia fusco-mucronata and Hennediella acutidentata with H. antarctica. Hennediella acletoi and T. leiostomoides are synonymyzed respectively with H. denticulata and H. longirostris. The sporophyte of Hennediella bellii is described for the first time. New records for various countries of the study area are reported.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside Russia very little is known about the terrestrial ecology, vegetation, biogeographical patterns, and biodiversity of the enormously extensive ecosystems of Yakutia, Siberia. These systems are very special in that they function on top of huge layers of permafrost and are exposed to very severe and extreme weather conditions, the range between winter and summer temperatures being more than 100 degrees C. The soils are generally poor, and human use of the vegetation is usually extensive. Main vegetation zones are taiga and tundra, but Yakutia also supports a special land and vegetation form, caused by permafrost, the alas: more or less extensive grasslands around roundish lakes in taiga. All these vegetation types will be described and their ecology and ecophysiological characteristics will be dealt with. Because of the size of Yakutia, covering several climatic zones, and its extreme position on ecological gradients, Yakutia contains very interesting biogeographical patterns, which also will be described. Our analyses are drawn from many years of research in Yakutia and from a vast body of ecological and other literature in Russian publications and in unpublished local reports. The anthropogenic influence on the ecosystems will be dealt with. This includes the main activities of human interference with nature: forestry, extensive reindeer herding, cattle and horse grazing, etc. Also fire and other prominent ecological factors are dealt with. A very important point is also the very high degree of naturalness that is still extant in Yakutia’s main vegetation zones.

Book excerpt: Bryophytes, a group of plants present in all terrestrial biomes of the Earth, play a significant role in ecosystems and have potential use in many life domains. They can be used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and healthcare domains and can help to improve air quality, create bio-repellents and bio-pesticides, and help cure both human and animal diseases. This book discusses novel aspects of fundamental and applicative bryophyte biology.
