Book excerpt: This paper examines trends in indicators of gender equality and women’s development, using evidence derived from individual indicators and gender equality indices. We extend both the United Nations Development Program’s Gender Development Index and Gender Inequality Index to examine time trends. In recent decades, the world has moved closer to gender equality and narrowed gaps in education, health, and economic and political opportunity; however, substantial differences remain, especially in South Asia, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa. The results suggest countries can make meaningful improvements in gender equality, even while significant income differences between countries remain.

One important step is to level the legal playing field so that the rules for operating in the worlds of work and business apply equally regardless of gender. Women, Business and the Law 2018, the fifth edition in a series, examines laws affecting women’s economic inclusion in 189 economies worldwide. It tracks progress that has been made over the past two years while identifying opportunities for reform to ensure economic empowerment for all. The report updates all indicators as of June 1, 2017 and explores new areas of research, including financial inclusion.

Book excerpt: "The European Union now has its first Index, created by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), that gives a comprehensive measure of gender equality in the EU and Member States based on the EU policy framework. The Gender Equality Index will complement the work of the EU and MS in promoting and realising gender equality as one of the fundamental values of the EU and will provide evidence for future policy improvements. The Gender Equality Index shows that the European Union is only halfway towards a gender-equal society, with an average EU score of 54 (where 1 stands for no gender equality and 100 for full gender equality)."--Editor.

Book excerpt: How was life in 1820 and how has it improved since then? What are the long-term trends in global well-being? Trends in real GDP per capita may not fully reflect changes in other dimensions of well-being, such as life expectancy, educational attainment, personal security, and gender inequality. The product of collaboration between the OECD, the OECD Development Centre, and the CLIOINFRA project, this report represents the work of a group of economic historians to systematically chart long-term changes in the dimensions of global wellbeing and inequality, making use of the best sources and expertise currently available and the most recent research carried out within the discipline. The historical evidence reviewed in the report is organized on ten different dimensions of well-being that mirror those used by the OECD in its report, How's Life? (www.oecd.org/howslife): per capita GDP, real wages, educational attainment, life expectancy, height, personal security, political institutions, environmental quality, income inequality, and gender inequality

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study positions equality between women and men as a fundamental value of the European Union, which is enshrined in its treaties and in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Mainstreaming the principle of equality between women and men is a major part of all its activities and represents the general approach to the implementation of all EU policies. Yet the position of women and men is shown to still differ considerably. For example, women's employment rates are lower; they have less political power and are more susceptible to poverty than men. Given this state of affairs, an effective monitoring of gender equality, based on a common set of indicators, is seen as essential. These indicators can identify strong or weak aspects of a specific situation in the Member States and facilitate intercountry comparisons. The indicators may also be combined in one single figure, a gender equality index. Such an index would be very useful to identify and monitor relative progress in gender equality over time. Over the last few decades, the relevance and importance of indexes in the field of gender equality has been recognised, and indeed several indexes have been developed -- EU Bookshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this open access book, the editors explicitly address the issue of measuring gender equality. The book introduces readers to basic concepts of gender equality, equity and equal opportunities, then discusses measuring these phenomena, the methods of constructing indicators, and reviews the main indicators that have been proposed at the international level to measure gender equality. It then sets the theoretical discussions against the findings from a Jean Monnet project financed by the European Union to highlight the importance of a regional analysis of gender equality in four main study areas: Italy, Spain, France and Germany. The results make it clear that it is necessary to move from the purely national perspective hitherto used in gender equality analyses to a regional one because differences can be highly pronounced even within the same country. This is a self-contained volume requiring limited statistical expertise for the reader and is aimed at social researchers and policymakers who wish to address gender equality from a quantitative perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gender equality index is a unique measurement tool that synthesises the complexity of gender equality as a multi-dimensional concept into a user-friendly and easily interpretable measure. It is formed by combining gender indicators, according to a conceptual framework, into a single summary measure. It consists of six core domains (work, money, knowledge, time, power and health) and two satellite domains (intersecting inequalities and violence). The gender equality index measures how far (or close) the EU-27 and its Member States were from achieving complete gender equality in 2010. It provides results at both Member States and EU-27 level. The gender equality index also provides results for each domain and sub-domain. It measures gender gaps that are adjusted to levels of achievement, ensuring that gender gaps cannot be regarded positively where they point to an adverse situation for both women and men. The gender equality index assigns scores for Member States, between 1, total inequality and 100, full equality.
