Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between academic domain specific self-concept (specifically mathematical and verbal) and the academic achievement in mathematics and English of young adolescents. Middle school students in grades seven and eight ranging in age from 12 to 15 years completed three subscales of the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (general school, verbal and mathematical self-concept). Results indicated that females displayed lower levels of mathematical self-concept while males displayed lower levels of academic self-concept, verbal self-concept and verbal achievement scores. No significant gender differences were found in mathematics achievement. Educational implications are discussed. (Contains 6 tables.).

Book excerpt: The primary goal of this research was to compare academic self-concepts and adaptive and maladaptive perfectionistic tendencies as they relate to differences in mathematics performance of first-year undergraduate students' gender and major (STEM or non-STEM). One hundred and ninety-nine first-year undergraduate students completed self-reported questionnaires including the Frost Multidimensions Perfectionism Scale, the academic self-concept scale of the Personal and Academic Self-Concept Scale (PASCI), and a math performance measure consisting of practice SAT questions. This study utilized correlational, multivariate analyses of variances (MANOVA), and multiple regression techniques. MANOVA results revealed a main effect of gender on all variables and a marginally significant effect of major on participants math performance. Correlational analysis examined the associations between the variables of interest. Results revealed significant expected associations between math performance and academic self-concept, and maladaptive perfectionism and academic self-concept. An unexpected finding was the association between parental influence on choosing a major and lower levels of academic self-concept. Hierarchical regression examined the effects of academic self-concept, adaptive perfectionism, and maladaptive perfectionism on math performance, controlling for gender and major. Results confirmed that gender and major were significant predictors of math performance. Academic self-concept was also a significant predictor of math performance. Finally, adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism were marginally significant predictors of math performance scores above and beyond all other variables. Overall, results indicate the importance of considering choice of major, academic self-concept, and perfectionism constructs in math performance.

Book excerpt: Nearly half of all physicians and biologists are females, as are the majority of new psychologists, veterinarians, and dentists, suggesting that women have achieved equality with men in the workforce. But the ranks of professionals in math-intensive careers remain lopsidedly male; up to 93% of tenure-track academic positions in some of the most mathematically-oriented fields are held by men. Three main explanations have been advanced to explain the dearth of women in math-intensive careers, and in The Mathematics of Sex, Stephen J. Ceci and Wendy M. Williams describe and dissect the evidence for each. The first explanation involves innate ability--male brains are physiologically optimized to perform advanced mathematical and spatial operations; the second is that social and cultural biases inhibit females' training and success in mathematical fields; the third alleges that women are less interested in math-intensive careers than are men, preferring people-oriented pursuits. Drawing on research in endocrinology, economics, sociology, education, genetics, and psychology to arrive at their own unique, evidence-based conclusion, the authors argue that the problem is due to certain choices that women (but not men) are compelled to make in our society; that women tend not to favor math-intensive careers for certain reasons, and that sex differences in math and spatial ability cannot adequately explain the scarcity of women in these fields. The Mathematics of Sex represents the first time such a thorough synthesis of data has been carried out to solve the puzzle of women's underrepresentation in math-intensive careers. The result is a readable, engaging account suitable not only for academics in an array of disciplines, but for general readers as well--including educators, science policymakers, parents of daughters, and anyone intellectually curious about a key controversy of our time.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to bring into focus some of the affective issues that students face in the math classroom. It is my personal belief that too much attention has been given to cognitive issues in the classroom, especially within the subject of mathematics. The theoretical background of this study lies in previous work in self-concept. Specifically, this research looks at student voices to shed light upon the relationship of student self-concept and academic achievement. To this end, the research relies nearly entirely upon student interviews, which were conducted in Seattle Public School District with twelve 9th and 10th grade students. The students were chosen by the researcher in concert with their teachers to produce a sample that spanned the range of self-concept status. From the original twelve students, three students became the subject of a more specific focus within the study and were asked to complete a follow-up interview. The results of the study focus on specific patterns within four subsets of the entire sample. Commonalities and differences were analyzed in the following groups: students with high math achievement and high self-concept, high math achievement and low self-concept, low math achievement and high self-concept, low math achievement and low self-concept. Special focus was paid to students with high math achievement and low self-concept because of this group's cohesiveness and because of their seemingly counterintuitive attributes.
