Studying a policy change in Spain, we find a negative effect of the reform on female college admission scores, driven by students expected to be at the top. The effect on admission scores does not affect enrolment, but the percentage of female students in the most selective degrees declines, along with their career prospects. Using data on college performance of pre-reform cohorts, we find that female students most likely to lose from the reform tend to do better in college than male students expected to benefit from the reform. The results show that rewarding high-stakes performance in selection processes may come along with gender differences unrelated to the determinants of subsequent performance.

We find that the policy change significantly reduced a large gender gap in questions skipped. It also impacted gender gaps in performance, leading to increased representation of women in the top percentiles of achievement.

Book excerpt: This paper examines how female and male examination performance are differentially affected by the degree of competitive pressure faced. Our setting is China's National College Entrance Exam (Gaokao) which is widely regarded as the world's most competitive exam. We show that compared to male students, females underperform on the high-stakes Gaokao, relative to their performance on the low-stakes mock examination held two months earlier. The gender gap in exam scores is 0.15 standard deviations larger in the Gaokao relative to the mock exam. This translates to a 15% decline in the probability that females qualify for a Tier 1 university when moving from a low-stakes setting to a high-stakes setting. To elaborate on the possible mechanisms, we conduct two further analyses. First, for subgroups of students where the stakes matter more, the performance gaps are larger, and we observe a decline in performance among females, coupled with an improvement in performance among males. Second, we find that, compared to males, females perform worse on the afternoon exam in response to negative performance shocks on the morning exam.

Book excerpt: This study investigates empirically whether and how the use of gender-neutral language affects the performance of women and men in real high-stakes exams. We make use of a natural experiment in which the institute administering Israel’s standardized college admission tests amended the language used in its exams, making test language more gender neutral. We find that the change to a more gender-neutral language was associated with a significant improvement in the performance of women on quantitative questions, which meaningfully reduced the gender gap between male and female performance on these questions. However, the change did not affect female performance on verbal questions nor male performance on either quantitative or verbal questions. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that gendered language may introduce a "stereotype threat" that adversely affects women’s performance in tasks in which they are stereotypically perceived to underperform. Our findings have significant implications for the ongoing academic and policy discussions regarding the use and effects of gender-neutral language.

Book excerpt: The improvement of women's educational outcomes throughout the latter part of the twentieth century was a cause for celebration as women closed the gap in achievement on all levels, but particularly in attending and graduating from college. As the gap closed in the mid-1970s, however, women's rates of college attainment continued to rise at a higher pace than men's, to the point where now, women account for 55% of the student body in U.S. colleges and universities. While this trend represents tremendous success on the part of women, the stagnancy of men's college attainment has only begun to be recognized. This stagnancy will soon take on a new urgency due to the reduction of manufacturing jobs in the United States in the last decade and the resultant decline in career prospects for non-college educated men. This thesis draws upon and tests previous theories of the college attainment gender gap, applying several statistical models to a dataset, the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which has not been previously used to address this issue. The study finds that controlling for race/ethnicity and family background characteristics among high school graduates, women enter college at a rate approximately ten percentage points higher than men. The gap is largest for black students, and smallest for non-black, non-Hispanic students. When controlling for high school academic performance in addition to the above factors, the gender gap is reduced to approximately six percentage points. Additionally, when adding controls for a set of variables indicating non-cognitive skills, the gap is further reduced to near three percentage points. The study also finds that the gap in college attainment is attenuated as time goes on. The gender gap is considerably higher when measuring college attainment by age nineteen than it is when measuring attainment by age twenty-three. This narrowing could be attributable to several explanations: boys being more likely to be held back a year in school; boys starting school at a later age; or young men being more likely to wait at least a year between high school graduation and college enrollment. This thesis adds to the literature on college attainment by gender, and it provides an early example of the potential to examine these questions with the NLSY97 dataset. The findings of this study support several theories proffered by earlier researchers and provide several avenues for further study of this important policy question.

Together these analyses support three overarching facts about gender equity in schools today: (1) Girls' successes don't come at boys' expense; (2) girls' and boys' educational performance has improved; and (3) understanding disparities by race/ethnicity and family income level is critical to understanding girls' and boys' achievement. The report finds that many girls as well as boys are not acquiring the educational skills needed to succeed in the 21st-century economy. The report dispels the myth of a boys' crisis and calls for a refocused public debate on the deep divisions among schoolchildren by race/ethnicity and family income level. This report illustrates that while educational trends for both girls and boys are generally positive, disparities by race/ethnicity and family income level exist and are critical to understanding the landscape of education in America today.
