Due to higher rates of anxiety and depression they are frequently admitted for inpatient psychiatric treatment.Materials and Methods:We propose a framework to help create a validating inpatient environment to deliver optimal psychiatric care for transgender TAY. We will focus on practical considerations that will facilitate and provide guidance for inpatient psychiatric clinicians.Results and Conclusions:Milieu considerations: room assignments, use of communal bathrooms, names on identifying wrist bands based on the preferred gender. Supporting the authentic self: demonstration of non-judgmental curiosity; clinical approach being non-directive and accepting of dynamic gender presentations. Supporting disclosure: appropriate support for the patient to discuss and disclose their TGD identity. Treatment of psychiatric disorders: treatment of underlying psychiatric conditions which are sometimes compounded by other displaced conflicts. Family involvement and engagement: improving family acceptance and cohesion. Comprehensive risk assessment: transgender youth can be marginalized, and at high risk for suicide and exploitation.
