Book Synopsis Recovering Women's Past by : Séverine Genieys-Kirk
Download or read book Recovering Women's Past written by Séverine Genieys-Kirk and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2023-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist rewriting of history is designed not merely to reshape our collective memory and collective imaginary but also to challenge deeply ingrained paradigms about knowledge production. This feminist rewriting raises important questions for early modern scholars, especially in bringing to life the works of our foremothers and in reconsidering women’s agency. Recovering Women’s Past, edited by Séverine Genieys-Kirk, is a collection of essays that focus on how women born before the nineteenth century have claimed a place in history and how they have been represented in the collective memory from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. Scrutinizing the legacies of such politically minded women as Catherine de’ Medici, Queen Isabella of Castile, Emilie du Châtelet, and Olympe de Gouges, the volume’s contributors reflect on how our histories of women (in philosophy, literature, history, and the visual and performative arts) have been shaped by the discourses of their representation, how these discourses have been challenged, and how they can be reassessed both within and beyond the confines of academia. Recovering Women’s Past disseminates a more accurate, vital history of women’s past to engage in more creative and artistic encounters with our intellectual foremothers by creating imaginative modes of representing new knowledge. Only in these interactions will we be able to break away from the prevailing stereotypes about women’s roles and potential and advance the future of feminism.
Book Synopsis Biblical Womanhood by : Lori Alexander

Book excerpt: This is a twelve-week course intended to teach young women what God wants them to be taught about biblical womanhood. The Church needs older women to step up to the plate and begin obeying God in this area. What if older women feel disqualified? If you are a godly, older woman, you ARE qualified according to God! Here are the qualifications for older women: "that they be in behavior, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things" (Titus 2:3) and the "good things" they are commanded to teach are listed in Titus 2:4, 5."That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husband, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."
Book Synopsis Life Writing and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Market by : Sean Grass
Download or read book Life Writing and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Market written by Sean Grass and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Writing and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Market begins from the premise that nineteenth-century life writing circulated in a market, in material and discursive forms determined substantially by the desires of publishers, readers, editors, printers, booksellers and the many other craftsmen and tradesmen who collaborated in transforming first-person narrative into a commodified thing. Studies of nineteenth-century life writing have typically focused on the major autobiographers, or on the formation of 'genre', or on the ways in which different class, gender, race and other affiliations shaped particular kinds of exemplary subjectivities. The aim of this collection, on the other hand, is to focus on life writing in terms to of profits and sales, contracts and copyright, printing and illustration-to treat life writing, through particular case studies and through attentive analysis of print and material cultures, as one commodity among many in the vast, c omplicated literary market of nineteenth-century England.
Book Synopsis Black Girlhood in the Nineteenth Century by : Nazera Sadiq Wright
Download or read book Black Girlhood in the Nineteenth Century written by Nazera Sadiq Wright and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long portrayed as a masculine endeavor, the African American struggle for progress often found expression through an unlikely literary figure: the black girl. Nazera Sadiq Wright uses heavy archival research on a wide range of texts about African American girls to explore this understudied phenomenon. As Wright shows, the figure of the black girl in African American literature provided a powerful avenue for exploring issues like domesticity, femininity, and proper conduct. The characters' actions, however fictional, became a rubric for African American citizenship and racial progress. At the same time, their seeming dependence and insignificance allegorized the unjust treatment of African Americans. Wright reveals fascinating girls who, possessed of a premature knowing and wisdom beyond their years, projected a courage and resiliency that made them exemplary representations of the project of racial advance and citizenship.
Download or read book Sex on Stage written by Andrew Wyllie and published by Intellect Books. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years just after World War II, theater provided an important critique of British society’s engagement with gender and sexual politics. Sex on Stage examines how British playwrights, actors, and directors brought women’s sexuality and gay and lesbian issues to the cutting edge of drama after World War II. Through a close reading of playwrights such as John Osborne, Harold Pinter, and Terence Rattigan, alongside accounts of their sociopolitical context and public reception, Andrew Wyllie reveals that this more progressive age was also one of reactionary statements and industry-wide anxiety.
