The Salafi proselytizing is more successful than ever, and the jihad in Afghanistan or Syria pulls Islamists from Germany. This collection offers an examination of currently virulent phenomena of Salafism and jihadism from different perspectives. It is sometimes claimed that either Islam and violence or religion and terror go hand in hand; the authors of this volume aim to show that this is not so. Using the methods of social science to determine whether and under what conditions such a dangerous proximity comes about, this book offers insight into which actors are being looked for by extremists to exploit and to use as self-fulfilling prophecies. To this end, the authors develop innovative analytical concepts: Among other things, a process of co-radicalization and an attitude-based approach to the study of Salafist networks are described. The book makes an important contribution to the current debate by not presenting the potentially dangerous proximity of Islam and violence as a social fact, but describes it as a factor that can be influenced and understood.

Revised and updated in light of developments in science, technology, economics, politics, etc. and their effects on tropical forests, it describes the principles of integrated conservation and management that lead to sustainability, identifying the unifying phenomena that regulate the processes within the rainforest and that are fundamental to the ecosystem viability. Features of the natural forest and the socio-cultural ecosystems which can be mimicked in the design of self-sustaining forests are also discussed. A holistic approach to the management and conservation of rainforests is developed throughout the book. The focus on South-East Asian forestry will be widened to include Africa and Latin America. Recent controversial issues such as biofuels and carbon credits with respect to tropical forests and their inhabitants will be discussed. This book is a substantial contribution to the literature, it is a valuable resource for all those concerned with rainforests.

Book excerpt: This is the first study to demonstrate the impact of Puritan literature on the development of German language and literature in the seventeenth century and beyond. It crosses the boundaries of theology, literature, and the English and German traditions to show that eighteenth-century secular thinking on introspection, psychology and subjectivity has its roots in vocabulary used in Germany as early as 1665 through the translation of figures such as Daniel Dyke and Richard Baxter. The book concludes with insights on John Bunyan, whose works inspired writers of the Geniegeneration such as Lenz, Wieland, Moritz and Jung Stilling.

Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1881 Morgenröte. This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 4 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. This work is often translated as "The dawn" or "the dawn of day". This is a poor translation of the original title "morgenrote" which refers to the reddening of the sky in the pre-dawn hours. Morgenröthe, or Morgenröte in the modern spelling, literally means "Morning-Red", a unique German word referring to the reddening of the sky in the twilight hours before daybreak. Rendering such as The Dawn of Day" or just "Daybreak", but this misses the connotations of the word. Dämmerung is "dawn", but Morgenröte is a specific phenomenon of the predawn eastern sky. In Roman mythology, there is a Goddess associated with the Morgenröte- Aurora. In Greek mythology, Homer called this the "rose-fingered Eos". This has continuity into Christianity as the Red Mass, the beginning of two different antiphons in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church at Advent to celebrate Mary who is symbolized by the dawn, traditionally celebrated in the pre-dawn reddening of the sky. While there isn't a direct equivalent word for the pre-dawn reddening, the closest literal translation would be "The Reddening Dawn", but to capture the dramatic tone, I rendered this “The Scarlet Daybreak”. Nietzsche is speaking here of a hope for his own dawn out of the nihilism he was born into –“seine eigene Morgenröthe”. In his initial declaration of war against Metaphysics in Human, All too Human, Nietzsche writes “the will is ashamed of the intellect.” This initial foray into Schopenhauer’s philosophy of the force of the will finally manifest itself as the Willen zur Macht here in The Scarlet Daybreak. Through this lens, he takes on the whole of Christianity and the Judeo-Christian moral continuum. He considers religious experience, particularly Christianity, as a psychopathological phenomenon, an idea he articulates in every single one of his works. His perspective shifts from a Darwinian-Historical in Human, All too Human, to a more phenomenological-psychological approach here in The Scarlet Daybreak.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the departure of European Muslims to the “Islamic State” and a wave of terrorist attacks in Europe in recent years, the questions of why and how individuals radicalize to Jihadi extremism attracted keen interest. This thesis examines how individuals radicalize by applying a theoretical framework that primarily refers to social capital theory, the economics of religion, and social movement theory. The analysis of the biographical backgrounds, pathways of radicalization, and network connections of more than 1,300 Jihadi extremists from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland shows that radicalization primarily need to be considered as a social process of isolation from former social contacts and affiliation with a new religious group. Radicalization is characterized by the transformation of social capital and often channeled through so-called “strong ties” to friends and family members. These peer networks constitute the social fundament of radical clusters on the local level which are usually linked to a broader milieu through exclusive mosque communities and religious authorities. Bonding social capital within these radical groups minimizes the risk of betrayal and promotes trust essential for clandestine and risky activities.

Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation into American English with introduction, translated from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1876 Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen. This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 2 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. Untimely Reflections is a collection of four essays written by Friedrich Nietzsche between 1873 and 1876. The essays are a critique of contemporary culture, society, and science, and Nietzsche argues that the "modern" way of thinking is inherently flawed. In the first essay, "David Strauss: The Confessor and the Writer," Nietzsche criticizes the way in which Strauss uses historical facts to support his own personal beliefs, describing it as a "falsification of history." In the second essay, "On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life," Nietzsche argues that "history should be a means to an end" and that individuals should not be enslaved to the past. In the third essay, "Schopenhauer as Educator," Nietzsche praises the philosopher Schopenhauer's ideas and his emphasis on self-overcoming. The fourth essay, "Richard Wagner in Bayreuth," is a critique of the composer Richard Wagner and his approach to art and politics. Nietzsche writes, "Wagner's art is not the expression of a higher rank of man, but the symptom of a lower." Overall, "Untimely reflections" is a collection of essays in which Nietzsche critiques contemporary culture, society, and science, and argues that the "modern" way of thinking is inherently flawed.

Book excerpt: This book examines how German-language authors have intervened in contemporary debates on the obligation to extend hospitality to asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants; the terrorist threat post-9/11; globalisation and neo-liberalism; the opportunities and anxieties of intensified mobility across borders; and whether transnationalism necessarily implies the end of the nation state and the dawn of a new cosmopolitanism. The book proceeds through a series of close readings of key texts of the last twenty years, with an emphasis on the most recent works. Authors include Terézia Mora, Richard Wagner, Olga Grjasnowa, Marlene Streeruwitz, Vladimir Vertlib, Navid Kermani, Felicitas Hoppe, Daniel Kehlmann, Ilija Trojanow, Christian Kracht, and Christa Wolf, representing the diversity of contemporary German-language writing. Through a careful process of juxtaposition and differentiation, the individual chapters demonstrate that writers of both minority and nonminority backgrounds address transnationalism in ways that certainly vary but which also often overlap in surprising ways.

This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 10 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. Ecce Homo is the closest to an autobiography from Nietzsche. It is a deeply personal, introspective work reflecting on his life and philosophy shortly before his descent into madness and death the next year. It serves as a summation of his philosophy and a personal autobiography. The title, which translates to "Behold the Man," references the moment in the Bible when Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd prior to his crucifixion. Nietzsche uses this phrase to reflect on his own life and philosophy, positioning himself as a Christ-like figure who has suffered for the sake of humanity. It is a work of staggering megalomania, foreshadowing his psychotic break. One of the key themes in the book is the idea of the "superman," or "Übermensch," which Nietzsche describes as "the meaning of my Zarathustra." He argues that the traditional values of Christianity and morality are holding humanity back from reaching its full potential and that individuals must transcend these values to become a "superman" and achieve true greatness. In the book, he writes, "I teach you the Superman. Man is something that shall be overcome."
