Book excerpt: This book explores cities and the intra-regional relational dynamics often overlooked by urban scholars, and it challenges common representations of urban development successes and failures. Gathering leading international scholars from Europe, Australia and North America, it explores the secondary city concept in urban development theory and practice and advances a research agenda that highlights uneven development concerns. By emphasising the subordinate status of secondary cities relative to their dominant neighbours the book raises new questions about regional development in the Global North. It considers alternative relations and development strategies that innovatively reimagine the subordinate status of secondary cities and showcase their full potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation in building design and construction depends on innovative strategies being developed by teachers and practitioners, made available to students and then professionally adopted. Successful transfer of this knowledge relies on appropriate support for both students and academics to ensure the new knowledge is translated into a format appropriate to the learner's current state of understanding, often using a constructivist, student-centred learning approach. This special issue of the journal Architectural Engineering and Design Management examines new strategies to manage effectively a growing number of students and a changing student profile in the built environment sector. Written by international experts in the field, core themes covered include student-centred learning, practice-based learning, good practice and evaluation, and instructional systems design. Several papers are devoted to virtual learning, focusing on e-pedagogy, standardisation, bridging the gap between academia and industry, and virtual learning environments. This peer-reviewed publication will be invaluable reading for lecturers and students on architecture and civil engineering courses, professional architects and engineers, and all interested in T&L, continuing professional development and distance learning in the built environment sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing for life, moral and values education as a bedrock for the original goals of school education, this monograph explores how life and values education is conceptualised and imparted in Greater China. Under a globalized, transnational, and technological world, where there has been an increase in people’s mobility, in information and cultural exchanges, there is also a growing emphasis on personal and professional ethics. Against this context, life, moral and values education has gained attention for its impact on shaping students' characters as future citizens. However, the cultivation of these values is made deeply diversified and complex by varying interpretations of "life education" and "values education" across societies, given that different societies are influenced by different socio-cultural traditions, educational ideologies and religious beliefs. The means and approaches towards life education also vary vastly from formal school subjects, school-based programmes as well as teachers and peers’ role modelling, community services, extra-curricular activities, school discipline, charity work, pastoral care, and school ethos. Recognising this inherent diversity and complexity in the approach to and the dissemination of life education, the contributors to this volume survey the practice of life education in Greater China so far, suggesting that life education is most effective when it is "diversified, dynamic and developmental across contexts". This book will provide the opportunity for engaging in important and serious debates about the future and the values that will underpin it and will prove of special interest to scholars and practitioners working on education policies curriculum development and teacher education in Greater China.

Using the concept of technology as a unifying theme, it presents a critique of neoliberalist policies and their impact upon curriculum, teachers' work, and the apparent de-institutionalization of vocational education - with particular reference to mathematics education and the consequences for adult students as (potential) workers and citizens.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of the Tenth International Conference on Information Systems Development (ISD2001) held at Royal Holloway, University of London, United Kingdom, during September 5-7, 2001. ISD 2001 carries on the fine tradition established by the first Polish-Scandinavian Seminar on Current Trends in Information Systems Development Methodologies, held in Gdansk, Poland in 1988. Through the years, this seminar evolved into an International Conference on Information Systems Development. The Conference gives participants an opportunity to express ideas on the current state of the art in information systems development, and to discuss and exchange views on new methods, tools, applications as well as theory. In all, 55 papers were presented at ISD2001 organised into twelve tracks covering the following themes: Systems Analysis and Development, Modelling, Methodology, Database Systems, Collaborative Systems, Theory, Knowledge Management, Project Management, IS Education, Management issues, E-Commerce. and Technical Issues. We would like to thank all the contributing authors for making this book possible and for their participation in ISD200 1. We are grateful to our panel of paper reviewers for their help and support. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Ceri Bowyer and Steve Brown for their unfailing support with organising ISD2001.
