And how was the memory of Jesus shaped by the experiences of the earliest Christians? For centuries, biblical scholars examined texts as history, literature, theology, or even as story. Curiously absent, however, has been attention to processes of collective memory in the creation of biblical texts. Drawing on modern explorations of social memory, Sandra Huebenthal presents a model for reading biblical texts as collective memories. She demonstrates that the Gospel of Mark is a text evolving from collective narrative memory based on recollections of Jesus’s life and teachings. Huebenthal investigates the principles and structures of how groups remember and how their memory is structured and presented. In the case of Mark’s Gospel, this includes examining which image of Jesus, as well as which authorial self-image, this text as memory constructs. Reading Mark’s Gospel as a Text from Collective Memory serves less as a key to unlock questions about the historical Jesus and more as an examination of memory about him within a particular community, providing a new and important framework for interpreting the earliest canonical gospel in context.

Book excerpt: This is the definitive report on Fragments, Binjamin Wilkomirski's invented "memoir" of a childhood spent in concentration camps, which created international turmoil. In 1995 Fragments, a memoir by a Swiss musician named Binjamin Wilkomirski, was published in Germany. Hailed by critics, who compared it with the masterpieces of Primo Levi and Anne Frank, the book received major prizes and was translated into nine languages. The English-language edition was published by Schocken in 1996. In Fragments, Wilkomirski described in heart-wrenching detail how as a small child he survived internment in Majdanek and Birkenau and was eventually smuggled into Switzerland at the war's end. But three years after the book was first published, articles began to appear that questioned its authenticity and the author's claim that he was a Holocaust survivor. Stefan Maechler, a Swiss historian and expert on anti-Semitism and Switzerland's treatment of refugees during and after World War II, was commissioned on behalf of the publishers of Fragments to conduct a full investigation into Wilkomirski's life. Maechler was given unrestricted access to hundreds of government and personal documents, interviewed eyewitnesses and family members in seven countries, and discovered facts that completely refute Wilkomirski's book. The Maechler report has implications far beyond the tragic story of one individual's deluded life. It explores our feelings about survivor literature and the impact these works can have on our remembrance of the Holocaust.

Dieser Forschungslücke liegen drei Ursachen zugrunde: 1. Die mangelnde Differenzierung zwischen unterschiedlichen Formen von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung, 2. die einseitige Fokussierung auf den Aspekt der diachronen Identität und 3. die fehlende Integration empirischer Ergebnisse in die philosophische Theoriebildung. Der Autor entwickelt auf der Grundlage dieser Problemanalyse einen Ansatz, der die Bedeutung von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung als konstitutive Kriterien personaler Identität aufzuzeigen vermag. Durch die Differenzierung verschiedener Gedächtnisformen, die Charakterisierung der biographischen Identität im Sinne eines evaluativen Selbstverhältnisses von Personen sowie durch die eingehende Berücksichtigung der psychologischen Gedächtnisforschung entsteht eine empirisch fundierte philosophische Theorie zur Rolle von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung bei der Konstituierung und Aufrechterhaltung personaler Identität.
