The readings are organized to take students from a discussion on ethical frameworks and regulatory issues to a substantial treatment of the four fundamental, interrelated issues of cyberethics: speech, property, privacy, and security. A chapter on professionalism rounds out the selection. This book makes an excellent companion to CyberEthics: Morality and Law in Cyberspace, Third Edition by providing articles that present both sides of key issues in cyberethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Goswami shows that the quantum worldview is not dreamy philosophy or esoteric physics, but has profound social consequences of planetary significance.” —Larry Dossey, MD, New York Times–bestselling author Beginning with Taking the Quantum Leap by Fred Alan Wolf, there have been a number of books that have created new paradigms for integrating science and spirituality. These books have been long on theory and short on application. This work represents something completely different for this genre. In his previous book, God is Not Dead, Goswami proved that not only are science and religion compatible, but that quantum physics proves the existence of God. In this new book, Goswami moves beyond theory into the realm of action. He asserts that quantum thinking is striking the death blow to scientific materialism; that quantum thinking allows us to break from past bad habits and brings us into free will and possibilities. Beginning with the question: “God is here, so what are you going to do about it?” Goswami calls for a plan of action that involves applying “quantum thinking” to a variety of societal issues. He issues a call for a spiritual economics that is concerned with our well-being rather than only our material needs; democracy that uses power to serve, instead of dominating others; education that liberates rather than shackles; and new healthy practices that restore wholeness. “Dr. Amit Goswami as usual has the most brilliant insights into how consciousness conceives, constructs, and becomes biology.” —Deepak Chopra “Read it seriously and take heart—all is not lost and we can change reality.” —Fred Alan Wolf, author of Taking the Quantum Leap

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the relationship between constitutionalism and populism in the Italian context. Italian populism is of interest to comparative lawyers for many reasons. Firstly, the country has a long-lasting tradition of anti-parliamentarism over the course of its history as a unitary state. After the 2018 general election, it has turned into the first European country in which two self-styled populist parties formed a coalition government. Although it collapsed in August 2019, many issues that it had raised remain. Secondly, as Italy is a founding member of the European Communities, the constitutional implications of populist politics have to be considered not only within the national framework but also in a wider context. This book argues that the relationship between populism and constitutionalism should not be seen in terms of mutual exclusion and perfect opposition. Indeed, populism frequently relies on concepts and categories belonging to the language of constitutionalism (majority, democracy, people), offering a kind of constitutional counter-narrative.

Book excerpt: San Pedro, Los Angeles. Young and smart, Alex Anderson is in full swing to be elected again in the Congress of the United States of America. In the last days, however, something begins to upset him. It is a unresolved part of his past, that Alex has brought with him every single day of his life. Its name is Maggie Jones. Certainly, for him she was still "little Maggie", his best friend that one day could have become the love of a lifetime, but about whom he had no news since 1986. One morning, during a meeting in his office in Washington, Alex gets a phone call. It's her. Out of the blue, his life is literally swallowed up by someone who begins to hunt him; it's Chuck Dillinger, former CIA agent who hit the headlines for having released dozens of top secret documents and serious details about NSA activity, starting in this way the scandal that the press renamed as Datagate. Social networks, mobile phones, credit cards: according to Dillinger, we are all intercepted. Why Alex Anderson? As Arianna Huffington explains in her article, Alex is part of the secret society most known in America and, perhaps, all over the world: Skull and Bones. A family tradition, since his father Ron and his grandfather Philip are its founders, just like Bushes. This would make him the predestined, chosen by his leader group as the next Republican candidate for the White House. Thus, in the crazy plan of Dillinger, Anderson becomes the connecting link with the system to subvert and overthrow. Along with Matt Payne, his friend a little bit crazy, and with Veronica Hayes, journalist for Los Angeles Times, met a few hours before aboard a plane, Alex begins a full-fledged race against time that will see him fighting, besides for his life, also and especially to foil an attack against the heart of democracy. After the murder of the FBI Inspector Carl Nowitzki, who in a few hours was supposed to meet Alex to give important news on the case, the command of the operation goes to Frank Da Silva, Head of the counter-terrorism division of the National Security Branch. The mysterious rites of Skull and Bones inside the Tomb and at Deer Island, chases, betrayals, gunfights and the spark of love that, like a bolt from the blue, inflames Alex and Veronica's hearts. The Predestined is a path of three hundred pages, dotted with a succession of twists and on the background of a real showdown among some segments of the intricate world of intelligence and of international espionage. A compelling story beyond all expectations, that will surprise you, will take you by the hand and drag you away until you discover the terrible secret behind the mysterious Maggie Jones. Our journey with Alex, Veronica and Matt is about to begin. And you, are you ready to save the World?

Book excerpt: An examination of the datafication of family life--in particular, the construction of our children into data subjects. Our families are being turned into data, as the digital traces we leave are shared, sold, and commodified. Children are datafied even before birth, with pregnancy apps and social media postings, and then tracked through babyhood with learning apps, smart home devices, and medical records. If we want to understand the emergence of the datafied citizen, Veronica Barassi argues, we should look at the first generation of datafied natives: our children. In Child Data Citizen, she examines the construction of children into data subjects, describing how their personal information is collected, archived, sold, and aggregated into unique profiles that can follow them across a lifetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists and theologians usually inhabit different intellectual worlds. Economists investigate the workings of markets and tend to set ethical questions aside. Theologians, anxious to take up concerns raised by market outcomes, often dismiss economics and lose insights into the influence of market incentives on individual behavior. Mary L. Hirschfeld, who was a professor of economics for fifteen years before training as a theologian, seeks to bridge these two fields in this innovative work about economics and the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. According to Hirschfeld, an economics rooted in Thomistic thought integrates many of the insights of economists with a larger view of the good life, and gives us critical purchase on the ethical shortcomings of modern capitalism. In a Thomistic approach, she writes, ethics and economics cannot be reconciled if we begin with narrow questions about fair wages or the acceptability of usury. Rather, we must begin with an understanding of how economic life serves human happiness. The key point is that material wealth is an instrumental good, valuable only to the extent that it allows people to flourish. Hirschfeld uses that insight to develop an account of a genuinely humane economy in which pragmatic and material concerns matter but the pursuit of wealth for its own sake is not the ultimate goal. The Thomistic economics that Hirschfeld outlines is thus capable of dealing with our culture as it is, while still offering direction about how we might make the economy better serve the human good.

Book excerpt: This collection offers a powerful and coherent study of the transformation of the multinational enterprise as both an object and subject of law within and beyond States. The study develops an analysis of the large firm as being a system of organization exercising vast powers through various instruments of private law, such as property rights, contracts and corporations. The volume focuses on the firm as the operational unit of governance within emerging systems of globalization, whilst exploring in-depth the forms within which the firm might be regulated as against the inhibiting parameters of national law. It connects, through the ordering concept of the firm in globalization, the distinct regimes of constitutionalization, national and international law. The study will be of interest to students and academics in globalization and the regulation of multinational corporations, as well as law, economics and politics on a global scale. It will also interest government leaders and NGOs working in the areas of MNE regulations.

Book excerpt: Working people are taking back their time and technological know-how from the deadening jobs in small, under-the-radar ways, making life better right now. They reclaim the streets at Critical Mass cycle rides; they reclaim the urban landscape with guerrilla gardening and make common cause in virtual worlds with networks, freeware and hacking. This is a discourse on work, on what we do to make it bearable and the creativity of all those people who subvert the normal order of things. The DIY future is now.
