The area of the whole surface, excepting the waters of the great lakes, is estimated at acres, or square miles the entire area being square miles. The State is bounded south-east by the Atlantic Ocean, south by New Jersey and Pennsylvania; west by Pennsylvania, Lake Erie and Niagara river; north west by Lake Onta rio and St. Lawrence river; north by the British possessions in Cana da, and east by Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
