Book excerpt: Ethan Torrini always knew where his life would lead, but doesn’t know if he wants to end up there. Needing an escape from a stagnant year before re-applying to law schools, Ethan follows his lifelong friend Ken to the small town of Chanthaburi, Thailand, to assist with his online gem selling business and find freedom from the inevitable march to forever. An artist at heart, Ethan is drawn to Chanthaburi’s many beauties, from the river that meanders through town to the glimmering gemstones in the nearby market and to a local woman with coconut-scented hair. For the first time, anything feels possible. Yet as a farang in a town of few foreigners, Ethan can’t comprehend the impact of his every action. A drive through town, a friendly drink with a rival seller, a dinner with a visiting English tutor, a simple pencil sketch … all have consequences that reach beyond Ethan and into the cultural, familial, traditional and financial obligations that dictate the lives around him. Even halfway around the world, there is no such thing as escape.

Book excerpt: The story of an encounter between a young and introverted gay man, Paul, and his Nemesis, a frail old soldier locked in reminiscences about his days in the British Army of India, Mr Fox. The story is narrated by Paul now aged 72 and begins gloomily, but lightens into a humorous reaction to the follies of British Indian occupation. Paul and Mr Fox meet in an NHS hospital in London, the young man afflicted by Tropical Sprue and the old soldier dying of bowel cancer. The young man is a closet gay and troubled by things of the flesh, by appearances, by missed opportunities and by adolescent certainties and yet doubts. Mr Fox is an extrovert who shares his outrageous preferences and undoubted racism with all and sundry. As a farrier sergeant he was undoubtedly expert for he was attached to General Dunsterville's troops of 'moral camouflage", the precursor of the SAS. Paul gradually becomes very much aware of his own empirical racism and British Empire mentality - which he finally embraces in the style of Mr Fox.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few subjects elicit greater moral outrage than human trafficking. Media reports of dehumanizing practices such as slavery, abduction, child prostitution, and torture, along with shocking statistics, form the basis of public knowledge. Those who work closely with victims acknowledge the complexity of the issue, and it is this complexity, rather than loose statistics and conjecture, that deserves our attention. With sensitivity and candor, this book addresses the reality of human trafficking in Thailand, dissecting studies, presenting facts, and dismissing stereotypes. It focuses on the areas of fishing, agriculture, domestic work, sex work, and the trafficking of children, weaving individual narratives and official studies into the wider history of Thailand’s changing economy and labor situation. It also details how the Thai government has addressed the issue, reflects on the roots of human exploitation, and suggests a way forward. This book raises much-needed awareness of commonly held misconceptions and clarifies what we know and what we have yet to discover about the trafficking of persons to and from Thailand. Highlights • Concise and accessible study of the reality of human trafficking in Thailand • Thorough critical analysis of current policies and public discourse on trafficking • Details relevant Thai and international laws • Discusses the relationship between the modern economic system and exploitation • Analyzes the changing face of the Thai labor market and the impact of industrialization on the Thai population

Book excerpt: Multi-Stakeholder Contribution in Asian Environmental Communication focuses on how diverse actors can come together to promote sustainable environmental practices. Bringing together 25 environmental communication scholars and practitioners across 15 innovative chapters, this book explores the dynamic roles of stakeholders – ranging from governmental bodies and non-profit organisations to local communities and industry players – involved in advancing environmental communication across the Asian continent. Drawing on a rich tapestry of case studies and interdisciplinary perspectives, the book sheds light on the interplay of religious, cultural, political, and economic factors that shape environmental communication strategies and public perception in Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Iran, Japan, and Pakistan. It probes into contemporary issues such as Islamic environmental communication, gender roles, social media, political communication, the role of games and gaming companies, as well as the portrayal of ecological messages in film. Overall, this book aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice and will make a significant contribution to the growing literature on multi-stakeholder contribution in environmental communication, particularly in the Asian context. This volume will be of great interest to practitioners, policymakers, and researchers working in the field of environmental communication.
