Book excerpt: An extensive air sampling program was undertaken to measure the particulate emissions from various gas turbine (jet) engines used in military aircraft. This joint Navy, Air Force project was directed and accomplished by the Navy Aircraft Environmental Support Office (AESO) at NAVAIREWORKFAC North Island. The project was accomplished per MIPR S-80-21. The objectives of the study were: First, measure smoke mass emissions at the engine exhaust plane and correlate the results with measured smoke numbers. Second, compare the smoke mass emission measured simultaneously by two different direct mass measurement procedures. A third objective was to measure the particle size distribution of the jet engine exhaust aerosol. Descriptions of the sampling methods used in this project are given in the next section. The aim of the project was to correlate the results obtained using several different particulate emission sampling methods on various military jet engines and determine if other indirect measurement methods can be used to adequately determine particulate emissions. A variety of engine types were tested including: J79-GE-8C/D, J79-GE-10B, F404-GE- 400, TF30-P-414, and J52-P-6B engines. The bulk of the testing and analysis was centered around three engine types: J79-GE-8C/D, J79-GE-10B, and F404-GE-400, due to their availability and widespread use by the Navy.

Book Synopsis Determination of Primary-zone Smoke Concentrations from Spectral Radiance Measurements in Gas Turbine Combustors by : Carl T. Norgren
Download or read book Determination of Primary-zone Smoke Concentrations from Spectral Radiance Measurements in Gas Turbine Combustors written by Carl T. Norgren and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The smoke concentration within the primary zone of an experimental combustor operating at pressures up to 20 atmospheres was determined with a technique using spectral radiance measurements. Exhaust smoke concentration was obtained from reflectance readings of stained filter paper. The primary zone smoke concentration was of the order of 100 to 1000 times greater than at the exhaust. The smoke oxidation rate obtained is compared with reported values for coal particles and seeded laboratory flames. Primary zone smoke concentration was shown to be related to exhaust smoke number and total radiance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) standardizes test equipment and procedures for the measurement of smoke emission from aircraft gas turbine engines. The procedures included are for determining and reporting the amount of smoke emission. Tests have indicated that the practically achievable precision of the smoke number is within ±3 when the system is properly used as outlined herein. This procedure is not intended for in-flight testing, nor does it apply to engines operating in the afterburning mode. ARP1179 was originally developed in 1970 (with subsequent updates) as the measurement technique for Smoke Number (SN) that has been used as the basis of regulatory standards for ensuring that the exhaust plumes from aircraft engines are essentially non-visible. It has, and still does, serve this purpose.More recent concerns relate to the health and climate impacts of particulate matter emitted by aircraft engines. Particle size, number and mass are all seen as relevant parameters as is the issue of "volatility".The SAE E-31 Committee is currently using all its resources in developing a new ARP on the mass and number measurement of non-volatile particles at the exhaust of aircraft engines.Hence the Committee recommends keeping ARP1179 as it still serves its purpose of quantifying the visibility at the exhaust of aircraft engines; it does not recommend any revision of it.

Book Synopsis CRC Cross Correlation Aircraft Engine Emission Test Program by : COORDINATING RESEARCH COUNCIL INC ATLANTA GA.
Download or read book CRC Cross Correlation Aircraft Engine Emission Test Program written by COORDINATING RESEARCH COUNCIL INC ATLANTA GA. and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CRC sponsored a test program to compare the performance of aircraft emission measurement systems. The tests were conducted at the FAA's National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center, Atlantic City, N.J. This report details the results of an analysis of the secured cross-correlation emissions data taken over five weeks by seven participants. Results of the participant-to-participant variability of the gaseous pollutants are provided for C0, Co2, THC, and NOx at, low and high concentration, and low or high power. Results for smoke indicate additional development effort is required to secure repeatable smoke data among participants. The smoke analysis was also limited by the small amount of data and the high levels which are no longer typical of current engine emission control technology.

Download or read book Subisokinetic Sampling Errors For Aircraft Turbine Engine Smoke Probes written by Joseph A. Martone and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental evidence that isokinetic sampling can be important for submicrometer particles in high speed flows was presented in CEEDO-TR-77-48. This report applies those results to gas turbine engine smoke measurement. The analysis predicts a 15 to 30 percent subisokinetic sampling error at a take-off engine power setting. It is concluded that subisokinetic errors do not greatly affect smoke number determinations but should be considered when true smoke density is measured. (Author).

Book Synopsis Trend Analysis for Maintaining Correlation of Gas Turbine Engine Test Cells by : EG-1E Gas Turbine Test Facilities and Equipment
Download or read book Trend Analysis for Maintaining Correlation of Gas Turbine Engine Test Cells written by EG-1E Gas Turbine Test Facilities and Equipment and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document describes a recommended practice and procedure for the trending of parameters to maintain the test cell correlation status. Trending is performed to monitor test cells for changes that can affect engine performance or the data acquired from engine tests. The FAA has issued Advisory Circular, AC43-207, on December 26, 2002 that recommends a 7-year re-correlation, trending or periodic checks. The FAA, AC43-207 bases their recommendation on the SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) 741.This document describes a recommended practice and procedure for the trending of parameters to maintain the test cell correlation status as well as for documenting the trend analysis results. Trending is performed to monitor test cells for changes that can affect engine performance or the data acquired from engine tests. Over time the quality of the acceptance test data for an engine can be affected by the test cell environment. This could lead to unanticipated and expensive results of either accepting a poor performing engine or rejecting a good performing engine. The use of trending the data for engine acceptance can avoid such costly errors.
