The availability of natural gas requires it to be transported from the production area through pipeline in most cases to the consumers; this requires compressor station mostly driven by gas turbine. The development of gas pipeline system requires important data such as appropriate pipe sizes, gas rate, required delivery pressure, appropriate compressor and gas turbine sizes. The investment for the pipeline and compressor station is capital intensive and therefore the techno-economic and environmental risk assessment tool to rapidly assess the pipeline becomes imperative. The objective of this project is to look at advanced pipelines and the close coupling of the compression system with advanced prime mover cycles. The investigation offers a comparative assessment of traditional and novel prime mover options including the design and off-design performance of gas turbine engine and the economic analysis of the system. The originality of the work lies in the technical and economic optimization of gas turbines and fluid movers, based on current and novel cycles for a novel pipeline application in a wide range of climatic conditions. The techno-economic and environmental risk assessment (TERA) tool created is made up of a number of modules, starting with the pipeline and compressor station modules which compute the necessary flow parameters and compressor performance, as well as the required compressor power. The next is the gas turbine performance simulation module, TURBOMATCH software was used to simulate the performance of the selected gas turbine engines at design and off-design conditions and it computes the thermodynamic conditions in the core of the engine. Receiving information from the performance simulation module, the emission module, which is based on combustion equations, estimates the amount of emission over the period of operation of the gas turbine. The economic module, which is essential to the tool, receives information from all the other modules to establish the life cycle cost and use the net present value (NPV) methodology to assess the plant. It also calculates all associated costs, as well as the cost of transporting natural gas. The economic module establishes the economic pipe size for any particular throughput. The electric motor drive module is the parallel arm of the methodology, handling all the modules as explained earlier except the gas turbine performance and emission modules. This allows a comparative assessment of gas turbine and electric motor drives to be carried out under any prevailing conditions. This methodology is unique to natural gas pipeline techno-economic assessment and no previous studies have looked at various aspects of the pipeline project before selecting a prime mover or an economic pipe size. This study further uses a genetic algorithm optimization tool to optimize gas turbine selection and compressor station location along the pipeline, based on total cost objective function. The optimization is limited to a particular pipe size and gas throughput. The use of various pipe sizes as well as varying throughput will be a major area for further studies. The results from the individual models are presented in chapters 3, 4 and 5. The result of the integrated modules under case study one and two shows that the transportation of 0.5 million cubic meter per day of natural gas over long distance interstate pipeline for both prime movers is uneconomical. The economic pipe size for 3.0 million cubic meter per day of natural gas is 609.6 mm (24") pipe size for the two prime movers with transportation cost of $0.063/m3 and $0.056/m3 for gas turbine and electric motors respectively. This is equivalent to $1.46/GJ and $1.30/GJ which agrees with the cost of natural gas transportation in literature. The result of the optimization shows a clear preference for the selection of a 34 MW plant for the pipeline and throughput considered since this presents the minimum cost which is the definition of the genetic algorithm optimizer. It is worth noting that this techno-economic tool, which is made of many modules, can be used to rapidly assess the profitability or otherwise of a natural gas pipeline project.

Book excerpt: Leadership in gas turbine technologies is of continuing importance as the value of gas turbine production is projected to grow substantially by 2030 and beyond. Power generation, aviation, and the oil and gas industries rely on advanced technologies for gas turbines. Market trends including world demographics, energy security and resilience, decarbonization, and customer profiles are rapidly changing and influencing the future of these industries and gas turbine technologies. Technology trends that define the technological environment in which gas turbine research and development will take place are also changing - including inexpensive, large scale computational capabilities, highly autonomous systems, additive manufacturing, and cybersecurity. It is important to evaluate how these changes influence the gas turbine industry and how to manage these changes moving forward. Advanced Technologies for Gas Turbines identifies high-priority opportunities for improving and creating advanced technologies that can be introduced into the design and manufacture of gas turbines to enhance their performance. The goals of this report are to assess the 2030 gas turbine global landscape via analysis of global leadership, market trends, and technology trends that impact gas turbine applications, develop a prioritization process, define high-priority research goals, identify high-priority research areas and topics to achieve the specified goals, and direct future research. Findings and recommendations from this report are important in guiding research within the gas turbine industry and advancing electrical power generation, commercial and military aviation, and oil and gas production.

Book excerpt: These proceedings contain 270 papers outlining ideas and contributions to the new scientific, technical and political discipline of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Control. The contributions were presented at the 4th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-4). It was the largest gathering of experts active in this new and fast-developing field.GHGT-4 was different from its predecessors in that it included all greenhouse gases, not only CO2, and all issues which could contribute to the mitigation of the greenhouse problem - technical, economic and political. The main focus was on practical solutions and real demonstrations of mitigation technology being planned and implemented today. It also addressed ways to increase the efficiency of power production and utilisation, and looked at proposals to encourage the development of renewable energy sources.During the Opening Session, 10 keynote addresses were heard from prominent personalities in government, industry and academia. To tackle this very inter-disciplinary problem and to achieve acceptable solutions, it is essential for industry and government to initiate intense dialogue and cooperation. Conferences like this can provide the opportunity for a meeting of minds between engineers and politicians in the face of global challenge. The primary attributes of this global challenge are manifold: the problem is global and international; it is inter-disciplinary, both in substance and approach; it covers technical, political and economic issues and involves government, science, industry and academia; it is complex and non-linear; and it will take the efforts of all parties involved to solve the problem. These proceedings contain ideas for starting demonstration projects and for making better use of the power and flexibility of market measures. They also show it is a problem we can influence and that there is a wealth of ideas. The challenge now is to find the right partners to put these ideas into action.

Fit for graduate students, practicing process engineers, and others interested in the subject, it offers a clear understanding and overview of thermal power plants in particular and of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) in general. Carbon Dioxide Emission Management in Power Generation starts with a discussion of the greenhouse effect, climate change, and CO2 emissions as the rationale for the concept of CCS. It then looks at the long-term storage of CO2. A chapter covering different fossil fuels, their usage, and properties comes next, followed by sections on: CO2 generation, usage and properties; power plant technologies; theory of gas separation; power plant efficiency calculations; and classification of CO2 capture methods. Other chapters examine: CO2 capture by gas absorption and other gas separation methods; removing carbon from the fuel; pre- and post-combustion CO2 capture in power cycles; and oxy-combustion CO2 capture in power cycles. -Discusses both CO2 capture technologies as well as power generation technologies -Bridges the gap between many different disciplines?from scientists, geologists and engineers, to economists -One of the few books that covers all the different sciences involved in the capture and storage of CO2 -Introduces the topic and provides useful information to the academic as well as professional reader Carbon Dioxide Emission Management in Power Generation is an excellent book for students who are interested in CO2 capture and storage, as well as for chemists in industry, environmental chemists, chemical engineers, geochemists, and geologists.
