Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the reasons for dramatic increases in UK gas prices since 2003, contending that replacement of administered arrangements by market relationships and competition have made UK gas prices far more sensitive to insecurities of supply, both small-scale and large-scale, leading to the formation of an industry ownership structure.

This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report examines the recent price increases in gas supply and the resulting rises in electricity prices (as about 40 per cent of electricity generation in England and Wales is gas-fired), focusing on the effects of the price increases on all types of energy customers. The report seeks to assess whether the rises are a temporary response to short-term supply problems or the start of a long-term increase in UK energy prices, and to consider possible responses by Ofgem, the regulator of the gas and electricity markets, and the DTI to the problem. Topics discussed include: Ofgem's report into wholesale gas prices and reactions to it; the decline in production from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS); gas storage and supply issues; the behaviour and transparency of the gas market and regulation issues; oil indexation in gas contracts; competition within European markets; vertical integration; the electricity market; new infrastructure projects; and the future of gas prices.

Book Synopsis The UK's energy supply by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee
Download or read book The UK's energy supply written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Energy and Climate Change Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government must start thinking strategically about energy security to protect the UK's energy supply against short-term shocks and rising global energy prices, according to a report by MPs on the Energy and Climate Change Committee. Gas storage capacity needs to be increased in the UK to minimise the potential damage from supply interruptions or price spikes, the report argues. It reveals that the UK's current storage capacity amounts to only 14 days worth of gas supply - a dangerously low level compared with France which has 87 days worth of gas storage, Germany 69 and Italy 59. 19 gigawatts (GW) of ageing electricity plant will close by 2018 and the UK will become increasingly reliant on energy imports as North Sea oil and gas reserves decline. The report concludes that new electricity generation currently being built or planned will fill this "gap". But it urges the Government to ensure security of supply by delivering on its energy efficiency targets, rolling out smart meters - that can balance demand - and maintaining a diverse energy mix.

Book Synopsis Energy Intensive Industries Compensation Scheme by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environmental Audit Committee
Download or read book Energy Intensive Industries Compensation Scheme written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environmental Audit Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Audit Committee believes the Government's £250 million compensation scheme to help energy intensive companies with the cost of carbon must be tightened up to avoid over-compensating large companies already profiting from the over allocation of EU Emissions Trading System allowances. The Committee scrutinised the Government's proposal for a compensation scheme to help offset some of the future electricity price rises that energy intensive industries will face as a result of the EU Emissions Trading System and the Government's Carbon Price Floor. Across Europe a large surplus of emission allowances in the EU Emissions Trading System worth 4.1 billion Euros had been accrued by large industrial companies as a result of pre-recession overly optimistic forecasts of growth and fierce lobbying by heavy industry. Sales of these allowances had already raised 1.8 billion Euros for these companies. In the UK, the Government's proposed rules do not take the value of these excess allowances into account when calculating compensation. The Committee also calls for an energy intensive industries strategy, as part of a wider UK manufacturing strategy, to set out a path for their maximum feasible decarbonisation and help guide and support companies to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Such a strategy should identify by how much these industries can feasibly decarbonise and improve their energy efficiency and how the Government will help to ensure that this is achieved, including through energy consumption reduction measures and incentives, and support for innovation, technological research, development and investment.

Book Synopsis Fixing Fuel Poverty by : Brenda Boardman
Download or read book Fixing Fuel Poverty written by Brenda Boardman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in the early 90s, Brenda Boardman's Fuel Poverty has been the reference text for those wishing to learn about this complex subject. In this, its successor, she turns a critical eye to the new millennium and finds that the situation, while now more widely recognised, is far from having improved. The book begins by discussing the political awakening to the issue and exploring just who constitutes the fuel poor. It examines the factors that contribute to fuel poverty - low incomes, high fuel prices and poor quality housing - and looks at and evaluates the policies that have been employed to help reduce the problem. The latter part presents a detailed set of proposals based around long-term improvements in the housing stock that must be employed if we are to avoid a dire situation continuing to get worse. Based on detailed analysis of the situation in the UK, the growth of fuel poverty (sometimes called energy poverty) in other countries and the new focus in European policy makes the book timely and provides important lessons for those who now have to produce policies to tackle the issues.
Book Synopsis Politics, Markets and EU Gas Supply Security by : Sandu-Daniel Kopp
Download or read book Politics, Markets and EU Gas Supply Security written by Sandu-Daniel Kopp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandu-Daniel Kopp investigates whether carbon reduction targets are compatible with market-driven competition in gas (and power) industries, and whether security of supply is compatible with competitive markets. He examines the policy trade-offs which need to be made between the three different elements, and whether these policy judgements should be economically or politically based. The analysis shows the need for a complex set of politically determined options to protect (competitive) markets from price risks and emergency events and demonstrates that this has thus far failed the policy test. Overall, the author argues that the three major elements of EU energy policy are incompatible in important respects and thereby challenges much of the conventional wisdom of EU and Member State policies of the past decade.
Book Synopsis European Energy Markets Observatory (2008) by : Colette Lewiner
Download or read book European Energy Markets Observatory (2008) written by Colette Lewiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The key findings include: -Oil price increase in 2007 and H1 2008 exacerbated fundamental tensions in the industry. The present price drop poses other problems. -Limited progress has been made to solve the “reducing CO2 emissions / satisfying the energy demand” equation, but there are reasons to hope -After an interim improvement in 2006, electricity security of supply deteriorated in 2007, calling for a significant investment program -Geopolitical tensions have increased risk on gas security of supply -Progress was made towards a common electricity market in Europe, but competition is not really taking up and prices to end customers skyrocketed in early 08 -The Utilities are in a good financial situation and important M&A have landed in 2008 -The financial and economic crisis is impacting the Utilities industry and should accelerate their business model change
