Book excerpt: This is book 3 and the finale of the Fate's Talons MC series! She was hunting for answers. She found me instead. GARRICK Valerie knocked on my door, desperate to find her runaway daughter. I told her get the hell off my doorstep. She didn’t listen, so I did the only thing I could do: Dragged her inside and gave into the lust burning us both up. I made her scream my name, night after night. But she won’t give up on the hunt. And when I find out that one of the prospects at my MC has disappeared along with the missing girl, I decide to join forces. The trail heats up. But so does my desire to own Valerie again and again. Before we know it, we’re in deep. With each other. And with a mystery that grows darker at each unexpected turn. When our enemies try to take her from me, I swear an unbreakable vow. I’m going to find the men who did this. And I’m going to make them pay.

Book excerpt: This is book 1 of the Hanley Family Mafia series! Books 2 and 3 are available everywhere now! He bought me to break my body. Instead, he broke my heart. I stumbled into the worst possible place at the worst possible time. And now I’m bent over and bare in my boss’s bed. I always thought the stories that people told about Luke Hanley were too far-fetched. But when I saw him and his thugs execute a man in an alley, I knew suddenly: Everything they said was true. He’s a cold-blooded killer, a ruthless mafia don responsible for every crime in the city. They say he uses women until he’s bored, then disposes of them. And I’m about to be next. His soldiers had me bound and gagged as they took me to the don’s penthouse. I figured this would be the end of me. A bullet in the skull and an unmarked grave. But to my surprise, Luke offers me a deal: He’ll spare my life… In exchange for my complete and utter submission. I have to let him use me, bend me, break me as he pleases. And I have to keep my mouth sealed shut. At first, I’m nothing more than a mafioso’s ragged toy. But as the savage, sweaty nights tick past, something becomes more and more clear to me: There’s a lonely man behind the mobster mask. And I’m falling hard for him.

Book excerpt: The life of this actor, manager, playwright, and eighteenth-century gentleman is here refracted through the volurninous correspondence and analyses of roles, plays, and performances in this, no doubt final, biography of David Garrick. As the direct result of modern scholarship accessible only since the 1960s, it is now possible to appraise fully the life of this remarkable person who was born in Lichfield 19February 1717, a childhood friend of Samuel Johnson, who became the greatest English theatrical luminary who ever lived, and who when he died 20 January 1779was mourned by the nation and eulogized by Dr. Johnson as one whose death "eclipsed the gaiety of nations." For twenty-nine years (1747-1776) Garrick managed Drury Lane theatre, caring passionately for its well-being. His own acting set the pace for the performances, his discipline carried it on, and his theatrical innovations attracted the audiences on which the lives, hopes, and families of some 140actors, actresses, singers, dancers, and others depended. In addition, he wrote, adapted, or altered some 49 plays and wrote nearly 100 prologues. What emerges from this big, new critical biography is a fully drawn portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman, with a wide range of acquaintances, elegant socially, morally, and personally, and an engaging conversationalist with and respecter of women of mark and with his closest friends. He was also, as the evidence now shows, the solid link with his own age and the great dramatic artists of the past, from the Restoration playwrights to Massinger, Jonson, Shakespeare, and early English dramatists.

Book excerpt: The stage of the 1700s established a star culture, with the emergence of such acting celebrities as David Garrick, Susannah Cibber, and Sarah Siddons. It placed Shakespeare at the heart of the classical repertoire and offered unprecedented opportunities to female actors. This book demonstrates how an understanding of the practice and theories circulating three hundred years ago can generate new ways of studying and performing plays of all kinds in the present. Eight short essays – on emotions, cultivation, character, voice, action, company, audience, and reflection – provide two things: a vivid introduction to the practice and ideas of the eighteenth-century stage, and the story of how these past practices and ideas were used in collaborative workshops around the UK to create new rehearsal exercises. Designed to work alone or in combination, these exercises are also open to further adaptation and analysis as part of a work that treats theatre writers of the past as potential collaborators for those interested in theatre today. Marrying academic and professional theatre expertise, this book ranges through a vast archive of writing about acting, from private letters and battered promptbooks, through to philosophical treatises and celebrity biographies. The exercises, stories, and ideas shared here capture the strangeness of this material – and sometimes its surprising familiarity, as questions asked of actors then seem to anticipate those questions we ask now. A truly unique offering, What would Garrick Do? Or, Acting Lessons from the Eighteenth Century offers a fascinating deep-dive into an important time in theatre history to illuminate practices and processes today.

Book excerpt: 'Garrick's Pupil' is a romance novel. Seventeen year old actress Esther Woodville arrives in London for her theatre performances, where she becomes acquainted with Lady Vereker. Both ladies are known to the hedonistic young Lord Mowbray, who has been making advances to Esther. Lady Vereker on the other hand is his former lover and wants to win him back. Meanwhile Esther is having her portrait done by the famous painter Sir Joshua Reynolds. His young assistant Francis Monday, an orphan taken in by Sir Joshua, oddly resembles Lord Mowbray, and can't help but steal glances at Esther...
