Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three mysteries precipitate an investigation into an otherwise ordinary suburban property, revealing a past inextricably woven into four centuries of American history. When Eleanor Phillips Brackbill bought her suburban Westchester house in 2000, three mysteries came with it. First, from the former owner, came the information that the 1930s house was a Sears house or something like that. Thrilled to think it might be a Sears, Roebuck & Co. mail-order house, Brackbill was determined to find evidence to prove it. She found instead a house pedigree of a different sort. Second, and even more provocative, was the discovery of several iron stakes protruding from the propertys enormous granite outcropping, bigger in square footage than the house itself. When queried about them, the former owner told her, Someone a long time ago kept monkeys there, chained to the stakes. Monkeys? Was this some kind of suburban legend? A third mystery came to light at closing, when a building inspectors letter contained a reference to the house having had, at one time, a different address. Why would the house have had another address? Her curiosity aroused, and intent upon finding the facts, Brackbill gradually peeled back layers of history, allowing the house and the land to tell their stories, and uncovering a past inextricably woven into four centuries of American history. At the same time, she found thirty-two owners, across 350 years, who had just one thing in common: ownership of a particular parcel of land. An Uncommon Cape not only tells the story of an eight-year odyssey of fact-finding and speculation but also answers the broader question: What came before? and, through material presented in twenty-two sidebars, offers readers

From quaint historic inns to seaside resorts and family-run motels, the Cape has provided a unique mix of lodging found nowhere else on the coast of New England. The luxurious Wequassett Resort and Golf Club dates back to 1925, and this slice of paradise became the Cape's only five-star resort. The quaint Chatham Wayside Inn originated in 1859 as the home of Captain Joseph Nickerson and has been welcoming guests and diners ever since. The Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis offered guests some of the best entertainment on the Cape with singing waiters known as the "Inn-tertainers." Local author Christopher Setterlund shares the fascinating history behind some of the places that have made this tourist mecca feel like home.

Built and occupied by farmers, merchants, the new armies of factory workers and other lower- and middle-class families, these are the modest homes that today line American streets. Using mail-order house catalogues from the time, Robert Schweitzer and Michael W. R. Davis chart the development of catalogue houses and their variations and include floor plans for many models. Students of architecture, whether amateur of professional, preservationists and academics will find in America's Favorite Homes a handy reference to those homes that soon will be eligible for historic designation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cape Cod cottage has been one of America's most popular home styles for almost four hundred years. While a perennial domestic favorite, historians have long ignored the modest Cape Cod, relegating it to a vernacular footnote along with barns and mills. In The Cape Cod Cottage architectural historian and photographer William Morgan places this uniquely American housea remarkable combination of necessity and traditionin its historical context and makes a compellingargument for the reassessment of its place in the history of American architecture. The Cape Cod Cottage follows the uniquely American house type from its earliest beginnings in the colonial period, through its spread across New England, to its embrace as a suburban ideal in the twentieth century, and its reinterpretation by contemporary architects. Historical images oflost Capes augment beautiful new photographs taken specifically for the book. As a tribute to a special house, The Cape Cod Cottage is an appeal to preserve the Cape's legacy and an essential document of this unique architectural icon.

Book excerpt: The classic nature memoir of Cape Cod in the early twentieth century, “written with simplicity, sympathy, and beauty” (New York Herald Tribune). When Henry Beston returned home from World War I, he sought refuge and healing at a house on the outer beach of Cape Cod. He was so taken by the natural beauty of his surroundings that his two-week stay extended into a yearlong solitary adventure. He spent his time trying to capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to. In The Outermost House, Beston chronicles his experiences observing the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued: “The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.” Nearly a century after publication, Beston’s words are more true than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of a community, and, moreover, a history by that community. In January, 2007, Jeannine Turgeon began to recruit a committee of Bellevue Park neighbors, volunteers who would be willing to produce a book about their neighborhood in honor of its 100th anniversary. Initial members were Clark and Vickie Bucher, Dan Deibler and Elizabeth Johnson, Chris Dick, Frank Haas, Hannah Leavitt, Carol Lopus, Mo Lynn, Bonnie Mark, Debbie Nifong, Peggy and Dan Purdy, John Quimby, Sue Ellen Ramer, Olivia Susskind, Doris Ulsh, Phil and Mary Walsh, Mary Warner, and Gretchen Yarnall. Prof. Michael Barton of Penn State Harrisburg was invited to serve as a consultant and general editor for the project, and we selected Xlibris as our publisher. In these early months, outlines were organized and re-organized, topics were proposed and discarded, and suggestions of all sorts were submitted and accepted or reluctantly retracted to fit within the publisher’s limits and the book’s budget.

In her consideration of selected American works from 1890 to 1970 - years that mark the closing of the Western frontier and later openings in space exploration, environmental protection, genetic engineering, and cyberspace - Simo uncovers a literature of place and the often-surprising relationship of place to our daily lives."--BOOK JACKET.

Against all odds, the village has preserved this heritage, and today Hatchville remains horse and farm country. In 1915, Charles R. Crane purchased fourteen thousand acres of land, which his family turned into the Coonamessett Ranch Company, a model farm for locals that later turned into a resort. In 1986, dedicated individuals formed a land trust to preserve the remaining wildness of historic Hatchville, while local neighbors held the line against development. Uncover the stories of the land and the local heroes of historic Hatchville.

West Bay Inn and East Bay Lodge became social gathering spots where people would stay for weeks or months. Churches, family markets, and the library lined Main Street. In 1914, the Crosby family designed a special racing class of boats--the Wianno Seniors. The Wianno Senior Knockabouts were commissioned by the wealthy families that founded the exclusive clubs Seapuit, Wianno, and Oyster Harbors; Wianno and Oyster Harbors are still known for their golf courses and are enjoyed by residents and visitors today.
