Book excerpt: According to Forbes magazine,* marijuana is “Canada’s most valuable agricultural product — bigger than wheat, cattle or timber.” Bud Inc. gives us an inside look at this thriving homegrown industry. Although the cultivation and selling of marijuana remains illegal in Canada, it is already big business, especially in British Columbia. Law enforcement officials estimate that the annual wholesale value of B.C. marijuana is now $6 billion, about 5% of the province’s total economy. If these stats are correct, it is B.C.’s largest export. Ontario and Quebec are not far behind. Vancouver journalist Ian Mulgrew has been following the rise of this underground economy for some time, and knows all the key players, political and entrepreneurial. Comparisons to the rum-runners of the Prohibition era are not unfounded. These so-called “pot barons” are all savvy businessmen who have built their empires using tried and true business models. Cash-strapped governments, pharmaceutical companies and other big businesses are well aware of the potential profits, and Canada has been at the forefront of the global movement to legalize medical marijuana and decriminalize the recreational use of the drug. Estimates vary, but it’s thought that nearly a million people in Canada could benefit from medicinal marijuana, yet only about a thousand are currently legally authorized to use it. Many feel that marijuana should be grown, regulated and taxed like any other commodity. Following the evolution of the marijuana trade from rich kids smuggling it in their luggage, to trans-oceanic operations involving tons of dope, to today’s thriving multi-billion-dollar domestic industry, Bud Inc. is a fascinating study of real-life supply-and-demand economics. *November 2003

Book excerpt: “A delightfully weird . . . journey that includes crazed pharmacists, a guy named Buddha Cheese, and an interstate road trip with a trunk full of pot.” —A. J. Jacobs, New York Times–bestselling author Alfred Ryan Nerz is a Yale-educated author, journalist, and TV producer. He’s also a longtime marijuana enthusiast who has made it his mission to better understand America’s long-standing love-hate relationship with our favorite (sometimes) illegal drug. His cross-country investigation started out sensibly enough: taking classes at a cannabis college, hanging out with a man who gets three hundred pre-rolled joints per month from the federal government, and visiting the world’s largest medical marijuana dispensary. But his journey took an unexpected turn and he found himself embedded with one of the largest growers and dealers on the West Coast. He quickly transformed into an underworld apprentice—surrounded by pit bulls, exotic drugs, beanbags full of cash, and trunks full of weed. But while struggling to navigate the eccentric characters and rampant paranoia of the black market, he maintained enough equanimity to explore a number of vital questions: Is marijuana hurting or helping us? How is it affecting our lungs, our brains, and our ambitions? Is it truly addictive, and if so, are too many of us dependent on it? Should we legalize it? Does he need to quit? As entertaining as it is illuminating, Marijuanamerica is one man’s attempt to humanize the myriad hot-button topics surrounding the nation’s obsession with weed, while learning something about himself along the way. “These wacky accounts rival T.C. Boyle’s fine novel Budding Prospects in showing the highly misguided paranoia that can be cured—or accentuated—by consumption of the marijuana plant’s sticky blossoms.” —Pasatiempo

Book excerpt: When Mama Was God: These are serious lyrics -Funny and Conscious, Riddim and Rhyme that have come from the pen of Michelle Bailey. She is one of those persons who sees cultural traditions as being evolutionary and should be passed from generation to generation not only orally but by the pen. She strongly believes that her cultural traditions and mores should not become extinct but should be valued and preserved as a result she has invested heavily in writing so that generation yet unborn along with the present generation can have a deeper appreciation of culture from an afro-centric perspective. In Michelle's seminal work, this book is not fluff. It is simply profound. The poems, properly read and understood show her academic depth and her grasp of the vernacular which she effectively weaves in her creations to tell her stories. Her use of rhetorical questions, similes and anthropomorphism do add color, create suspense and make the reader want to say yes, yes ‘you right’. It points to issues relating to race, gender, religion, the Jamaican dialect and folk culture and Jamaicans' attitudes towards life and work, roots and culture. I also find this to be a potpourri of literary delight well-seasoned and well balanced and well served. I am opined it will have a cross sectional appeal to the target audience. Very appealing to me also were the poems : Somebody’s Child, Ugly Truth, and If You Only Knew. Michelle is a true Jamaican cultural icon when you read her poems you develop nostalgia, and you are drawn right back to your roots. Read these serious lyrics, funny and conscious, riddim and rhyme, laugh till your belly ‘bust’, or cry till your gland runs out of tears, or bow your head in agreement till you develop your own literary riddim. Book excerpt: “A delightful, and surprisingly moving, tale” -- Michael Lewis, bestselling author of Moneyball “Karlgaard flies in with a companion concept to David Brooks’s On Paradise Drive” -- Tom Wolfe “While counterintuitive to those on the conventional fast-track, Life 2.0 offers great promise to those who are open to personal innovation” -- Clayton Christensen, Professor, Harvard Business School “This fascinating treatise will make you think deeply, and may just give you the impetus to uproot” -- Tom Peters “An original and exhilarating look at options many Americans don’t realize are now open to them.” -- James Fallows, national correspondent, The Atlantic Monthly “Not only will it widen the horizons of your life, it could also renew your health and wealth.” -- George Gilder Have You Found the Where of Your Happiness? One of the intriguing things about the United States is the idea of the second chance, that when you feel stuck there is always a frontier you can cross to reinvent yourself. In Life 2.0, Rich Karlgaard used his own personal and professional midlife crises to look at the state of the American dream—the belief in continuous personal upward mobility—and where it stands in the twenty-first century. At the ripe old age of forty-five, Karlgaard fell in love with flying and mastered the art of lifting up and bringing down a “2,500-pound aluminum box kite”—a four-seat single-engine airplane. As the publisher of Forbes he felt that he was doing too much armchair theorizing and didn’t really understand how Americans were responding to the changes that had started taking place so swiftly over the past few years. So he put together his new flying skills and reportorial mission and flew around America to places like Green Bay, Wisconsin; Bozeman, Montana; Fargo, North Dakota; Des Moines, Iowa; and Lake Placid, New York, to gain some insight into how ordinary Americans are untangling the knotty problems of constant stress, crushing expense, and bewildering hassle that often characterize life in the nation’s urban centers. He discovered their simple solution: they moved. What Karlgaard found on the road are fascinating and inspiring stories about people— those with a nose for entrepreneurship, a faith in technology, and the willingness to take a chance—who are finding the new American dream in places as far from New York City and Silicon Valley as you can imagine. Some of those people include: • A burned-out insurance exec who fled his overworked East Coast life and settled in tranquil (yet dynamic) Des Moines • A tool broker who traded his brick-and-mortar business in sunny California for a life in the Pennsylvania hills, where he relaunched his business on the Internet • A road-warrior democracy specialist who conducts her worldly affairs from the low-key outpost of Bismarck, North Dakota • A self-made millionaire who paid for his financial success with his first marriage and who did things differently the second time around by moving to smaller cities and focusing on family as well as work Adroitly combining analysis of the economic and social trends challenging middle-class people with perceptive advice on how to escape the rat race of the coasts, Karlgaard explores the eye-opening possibilities of that huge tract of land often carelessly dubbed “flyover country.” Filled with stories of personal reinvention and triumph, Life 2.0 is the story of those who are living larger lives in smaller places.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction Winner of the William Dean Howells Medal Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize Over One Year on the New York Times Bestseller List A New York Times Notable Book and a Washington Post, Time, Oprah Magazine, Newsweek, Chicago Tribune, and Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year "The best novel ever written about trees, and really just one of the best novels, period." —Ann Patchett The Overstory, winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, is a sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of—and paean to—the natural world. From the roots to the crown and back to the seeds, Richard Powers’s twelfth novel unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. There is a world alongside ours—vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe.

Jersey City author, Daniel Ali explores the socio-economic causes of criminality in the inner cities of America, and how those who get caught up in the ‘Game’ reconcile their lives, relationships, and emotions. Ali unpacks the ‘Game’ through protagonist Adriano de Souza, a young, first-generation Afro-Brazilian street hustler torn between a lucrative but violent world and the woman he’s loved his entire life. He intentionally and methodically unmasks their pain and secret coping mechanisms as they struggle to balance life with betrayal and deception. He skillfully breathes life into relatable characters by focusing on the real-world human themes evident in the tragic but all too common reality of the street. While Love and the Game exposes the truths of the fast-life allure and the American lust for material gain, it also offers a unique perspective of the conflicted, inner humanity of many of those who get caught up and whose voices are often muted.
