These data are presented as gamma- ray production group cross-section values of d$sup 2$sigma/d$omega$dE for 0.3 less than or equal to E/sub gamma/ less than or equal to 10.5 MeV, with gamma-ray intervals ranging from 15 keV for E/sub gamma/ less than or equal to 0.4 MeV to 160 keV for E/sub gamma/ approximately 9 MeV. Neutron energy intervals varied from 0.10 MeV for E/sub n/ between 0.3 and 0.4 MeV to 3 MeV for E/sub n/ between 14 and 20 MeV. (auth).

Book excerpt: Using existing experimental data for neutron-induced total, elastic, inelastic, reaction and fission cross sections, as well as results from nuclear model calculations and evaluations from nuclear reaction data libraries, we derived an estimate for the cross sections for the 235U(n,2n) and 239Pu(n,2n) reactions for the neutron energy range from threshold to approximately 12 MeV. In effect, our approach is based on subtracting the fission and inelastic cross sections from the total reaction cross section where the difference is expected to yield the (n,2n) cross section. In addition to this subtraction approach, a ratio method and a differential method have also been explored. For 235U(n,2n), as a test case, we arrive at a cross section consistent with previous measurements, and for 239Pu(n,2n) we obtain a peak value of 400 " 60 mb for the incident neutron energy range of 10 (less-than or equal to) E{sub n} (less-than or equal to) 12 MeV.

Neutrons from the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA) impinged a sample of natural boron. Gamma rays resulting from neutron interactions were detected using a well-calibrated intrinsic-Ge detection system. Data reduction included compensation for Doppler broadening of the observed peaks and corrections due to incident neutron attenuation, effects due to multiple scattering of neutrons, and sample attenuation of the outgoing gamma rays. Cross sections for gamma rays having energies (in keV) of 2124, 4445, 4741, 5020, 6434, 6743+6793 (combined), and 7286 following inelastic scattering, of 478 keV from the 11B(n, n[alpha][gamma])7Li reaction, and of 718 keV from the 11B(n,2n[gamma])1°B reaction as functions of incident neutron energy are presented in tabular form.
