Book excerpt: It is common knowledge that the television series Game of Thrones and revenge go together well, but whether Game of Thrones and feminism are compatible is debatable, to say the least. This book shows how the series’ female characters in particular utilise revenge to acquire autonomy, fight objectification, and pursue equality. On the one hand, they do so by mirroring the female characters of English Renaissance Revenge Tragedies. On the other, prevailing feminist ideas of the 21st century are also incorporated. The resulting tension between models from the Renaissance and current feminist impulses allows for an interpretation of Game of Thrones as a contemporary, feminist version of a Revenge Tragedy. Thus, this book discusses gender, equality, and representation, problematising the heteronormative, binary perspective so commonly given on the series. As such, the book is for everyone interested in popular culture and its influences and developments, both fans and critics of the show, feminists, and those who aspire to educate themselves.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work, the inspiration for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon “The thrill of Fire & Blood is the thrill of all Martin’s fantasy work: familiar myths debunked, the whole trope table flipped.”—Entertainment Weekly Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart. What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed. With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros. Praise for Fire & Blood “A masterpiece of popular historical fiction.” —The Sunday Times “The saga is a rich and dark one, full of both the title’s promised elements. . . . It’s hard not to thrill to the descriptions of dragons engaging in airborne combat, or the dilemma of whether defeated rulers should ‘bend the knee,’ ‘take the black’ and join the Night’s Watch, or simply meet an inventive and horrible end.”—The Guardian

Book excerpt: Chris Comerford explores cinematic digital television as an artistic classification and an academic object of study, and illuminates the slippage in definitions of previously understood media forms. The growth of television as an artistic, informative medium has given rise to shifts in the aesthetic style of the programmes we watch, and this book outlines these shifts along with the contemporary debates and critical theory surrounding them. Comerford looks at the forms and aesthetics of television, the production standards influencing streaming television and the agency of audiences, and provides case studies of key TV shows illustrating these shifts, including Twin Peaks: The Return, WandaVision, Hacks and Russian Doll. Navigating the levels of production and reception in cinematic digital television, the book uses film-inspired TV as a lightning rod for understanding our narrative screen media landscape and the classifications we use to negotiate it. As an essential reading for both scholars and students of media and television studies, this book provides a much-needed consideration of the changing landscape of television.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than three years after the end of the original series, HBO's massive success Game of Thrones gets its first of many planned spin-offs with the August 21 premiere of HOUSE OF THE Dragon. Here is everything you need to know if you're wondering how the series fits into the realm of the Seven Kingdoms (and just how many odd, hardly pronounceable names you're going to have to memorize). A new game begins Given that House of the Dragon is a prequel that takes place nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones, these events aren't particularly relevant to it. However, the conflict and tension surrounding the Targaryen rightful heirs and the sexist lines of succession that were central to Daenerys and Jon's dynamic-or would have been, if it had been given enough room to develop in the final season-is amplified in the new show. That's correct, there will once again be a battle for the Iron Throne, with all the intrigue and treachery that goes along with it and, now, even more dragons. Before Robert's Rebellion, which toppled the Mad King, and even earlier than Daenerys' ascent and fall, the new series focuses on House Targaryen at their pinnacle of power in the Seven Kingdoms. Additionally, a large number of Targaryens rode and fought with dragons during the period when it is set, when dragons were an integral part of daily life. House of the Dragon is a song of fire and fire if Game of Thrones was a song of ice and fire. Or perhaps Fire and Blood, since that is also the name of the novel that served as the basis for the new show. The 700+ page fictional history of the Targaryen dynasty from the time of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen to invade Westeros with dragons after fleeing the doomed city of Old Valyria in Essos, is a spin-off of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, on which Game of Thrones was based. The Dance of the Dragons, a civil war in which Targaryen turned against Targaryen and dragon fought a dragon in a vicious and deadly struggle for dominance, proved to be the beginning of the end for the clan. House doesn't cover the entire novel, but rather a very particular period that is covered in it. The most intriguing aspect of the series based on Fire and Blood is that, although the major war events are described in the book, there is a lot of space for interpretation and artistic license. Games Masters The fact that House of the Dragon isn't being produced by Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss should give you some comfort if you were one of the many Game of Thrones fans who felt let down by the series conclusion. Instead, Ryan Condal, who previously created and produced the science fiction program Colony, and George R. R. Martin themselves are co-creators and executive producers. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, who is renowned for directing some of the greatest and most enduring Game of Thrones episodes, including "Hardhome," "Battle of the Bastards," and "The Winds of Winter," are also co-showrunners. The soundtrack for the House of the Dragon will also be composed by Ramin Djawadi, who is also responsible for the magnificent score for Game of Thrones. You might expect to recognize familiar Westeros places, house colours, and symbols in the show's visual style, but since House is set almost two centuries earlier, many things appear very different. After all, the Targaryens (and the Seven Kingdoms as a whole) are thriving during this period of debauchery. More swords create the framework of the Iron Throne, making it look even more menacing and more as it does in Martin's books.
