Book excerpt: Prior family business research has advanced several explanations, insights, and empirical data for why African American businesses are not successful or lag behind but leaves a key imperative unexplored: game-changing strategies of successful African American family-owned businesses (AAFOB). African Americans have a long history of entrepreneurship despite the legacy of slavery and discrimination. By studying four successful AAFOB in distinctively differing industries that have achieved generational transition and wealth capture, the author developed a theoretical concept model for addressing the following question: How do successful AAFOB build generational wealth and advance succession transcending complex historical constraints? Like all family businesses, AAFOB engage in entrepreneurial activity and relationship building to create access to opportunity, resources, capital, and talent. The findings reveal that the difference lies in the relationship-building strategies for inclusion, wealth building, and succession readiness that are game changing for participation and require exceptional motivational attributes to rise above constraints and build bridges into exclusionary and other business networks to belong, be known, and trusted as a pathway for success. These findings provide evidenced-based practices that prescribe a process to build transgenerational wealth and advance succession that is cyclical. The study offers a discovery of novel approaches to family business entrepreneurship theory as a contribution to academic literature and practitioner work towards economic parity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how African-American professionals can combine their personal strengths with the wisdom of others to plant the seeds of a positive, lasting legacy in the workplace. Randal Pinkett was the first African-American winner on The Apprentice. When he won, he also became the only contestant to be asked to share his victory with a white woman. For generations, African-Americans have been told that they need to work twice as hard as everyone else to succeed. However, as millions of black Americans were reminded by Pinkett's experience, sometimes hard work is not enough. Black Faces in White Places is about "the game", the competitive world in which we all live and work. The book offers 10 revolutionary strategies for playing, mastering, and changing the game for the current generation, while undertaking a wholesale redefinition of the rules for those who will follow. In this book, you will: Expand yourself beyond your comfort zone Recognize and demonstrate the four facets of excellence Build beneficial relationships and powerful networks Identify different mentors and learn from others' experiences Discover ways of working with others to facilitate collective action Based on the authors' considerable experiences in business, in the public eye, and in the minority, the book shows how African-American professionals can (and must) think and act both entrepreneurially and "intrapreneurially". Black Faces in White Places not only explains shattering the old "glass ceiling” and changing the concept of success, but also examines the four dimensions of the contemporary black experience: identity, society, meritocracy, and opportunity.

Like its predecessor, this book looks at the essential challenges and practical approaches legacy families and their leaders can take to ensure that all aspects of their greater family enterprise -- family, business, philanthropy and other initiatives -- work well now and for long into the future. The book begins with an understanding that true family wealth includes, but also goes well beyond, financial assets. It discusses in detail topics such as family unity, harmony and security, a clear statement of purpose, vision and values, effective family governance, leadership and succession, and full consideration of the challenges and opportunities for the journey across different generations, between branches and for individual family members. Real world examples and practical approaches are set out for the reader's review and potential application. Focusing on both human and commercial aspects of legacy families, the book aims to provide guidance and proven approaches to the non-commercial aspects of wealthy families and their potential long-term success, reflecting an understanding that the families that are most likely to prosper long into the future address both the commercial and non-commercial aspects of family and family sustainability in equal measure.Drawing from many decades working with leading families around the world who have understood and mastered many of the most important challenges families face today, the two authors bring their collective expertise and experience to all families and their leaders who aspire to create the best possible future for their own families in these challenging times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widening gap between the rich and the poor is turning the American dream into an impossibility for many, particularly children and families. And as the children of low-income families grow to adulthood, they have less access to opportunities and resources than their higher-income peers--and increasing odds of repeating the experiences of their parents. Families in an Era of Increasing Inequality probes the complex relations between social inequality and child development and examines possibilities for disrupting these ongoing patterns. Experts across the social sciences track trends in marriage, divorce, employment, and family structure across socioeconomic strata in the U.S. and other developed countries. These family data give readers a deeper understanding of how social class shapes children's paths to adulthood and how those paths continue to diverge over time and into future generations. In addition, contributors critique current policies and programs that have been created to reduce disparities and offer suggestions for more effective alternatives. Among the topics covered: Inequality begins at home: the role of parenting in the diverging destinies of rich and poor children. Inequality begins outside the home: putting parental educational investments into context. How class and family structure impact the transition to adulthood. Dealing with the consequences of changes in family composition. Dynamic models of poverty-related adversity and child outcomes. The diverging destinies of children and what it means for children's lives. As new initiatives are sought to improve the lives of families and children in the short and long term, Families in an Era of Increasing Inequality is a key resource for researchers and practitioners in family studies, social work, health, education, sociology, demography, and psychology.

It examines the managerial, behavioral, and strategic issues facing these companies and offers conclusive statements about their performance and influence on the region. Family businesses have been found to outperform non-family businesses in advanced industrialized economies, yet no such information exists on the importance of these companies which dominate the economic landscape of sub-Saharan Africa. Through empirical evidence and cross-country data, a team of expert contributors explore matters related to the management of family-owned businesses, such as how they evaluate employee productivity and performance, manage human resources, view governance practices and the role of women, and other sensitive issues. This is a seminal text for students and researchers in family business, entrepreneurship, strategic management, and family business owners looking to improve and advance their companies for the greater good of sub-Saharan Africa and the rest of the continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Ron Eyerman explores the formation of the African-American identity through the theory of cultural trauma. The trauma in question is slavery, not as an institution or as personal experience, but as collective memory: a pervasive remembrance that grounded a people's sense of itself. Combining a broad narrative sweep with more detailed studies of important events and individuals, Eyerman reaches from Emancipation through the Harlem Renaissance, the Depression, the New Deal and the Second World War to the Civil Rights movement and beyond. He offers insights into the intellectual and generational conflicts of identity-formation which have a truly universal significance, as well as providing a compelling account of the birth of African-American identity. Anyone interested in questions of assimilation, multiculturalism and postcolonialism will find this book indispensable.
