Book excerpt: Like many parents, Richard and Pam Kendrick dedicated themselves to the passions of their children. Namely, baseball. It seemed little Steven came out swinging from the beginning. It wasn't long before Kendrick (Richard) found himself coaching tournament-level youth baseball, taking both his son and daughter's teams to national championships as they grew. Through it all, it was always Steven leading the way forward. This was true right up to his first year at college on a full scholarship, when the dream came crashing down in an instant. At just 19 years old, Steven "Stevo" Kendrick had already made a name for himself within the baseball community. Having played competitive ball practically since he was big enough to swing a bat, Stevo was more than an athlete. He was a leader for his community and school, and the guiding light of his father's life. Everyone knew he was destined to do big things. Trying to make sense of it all, his father provides not only a beautiful memorial to his son's memory, but help and advice for parents of young sports stars to remember what's most important while pursuing the dream. Kendrick looks back on Steven's life of excellence and draws out messages of hope, inspiration, and healing for sports families and parents suffering through the unique grief of losing a child.

Book excerpt: It is by making innovation an intimate, intentional part of the business that A. G. Lafley - the Jack Welch of the 21st century - has recently transformed Procter & Gamble from a $39 into a $76 billion dollar company that touches more than 3 billion people around the world. On the brink of collapse when he joined in 2000, it became a model for growth and innovation. In this inspiring and practical book Lafley explains how making innovation more than just a stand-alone activity enabled him to turn around growth, productivity and the bottom line. As this book shows, innovation can become a reliable and repeatable game-changer for any business in all areas of the organisation, from the CEO's desk to the everyday activities of each employee. By using new insights and easy-to-relate-to stories from P&G and other companies - describing, for example, the best way to brainstorm, and the "innovation portfolio" - this book is destined to become as influential as Good to Great and as Charan's own bestseller, Execution.

Book excerpt: Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies (NGS) are revolutionizing the field of food microbiology. Microbial whole genome sequencing (WGS) can provide identification, characterization, and subtyping of pathogens for epidemiological investigations at a level of precision previously not possible. This allows for connections and source attribution to be inferred between related isolates that may be overlooked by traditional techniques. The archiving and global sharing of genome sequences allow for retrospective analysis of virulence genes, antimicrobial resistance markers, mobile genetic elements and other novel genes. The advent of high-throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, in combination with the advantages offered by massively parallel second-generation sequencing for metagenomics, enable intensive studies on the microbiomes of food products and the impact of foods on the human microbiome. These studies may one day lead to the development of reliable culture-independent methods for food monitoring and surveillance. Similarly, RNA-seq has provided insights into the transcriptomes and hence the behaviour of bacterial pathogens in food, food processing environments, and in interaction with the host at a resolution previously not achieved through the use of microarrays and/or RT-PCR. The vast un-tapped potential applications of NGS along with its rapidly declining costs, give this technology the ability to contribute significantly to consumer protection, global trade facilitation, and increased food safety and security. Despite the rapid advances, challenges remain. How will NGS data be incorporated into our existing global food safety infrastructure? How will massive NGS data be stored and shared globally? What bioinformatics solutions will be used to analyse and optimise these large data sets? This Research Topic discusses recent advances in the field of food microbiology made possible through the use of NGS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owning Game-Changing Subcategories is about creating organizational growth in the digital age by creating and owning game-changing subcategories fueled by digital. Owning Game-Changing Subcategories outlines the path to finding, managing, and leveraging new subcategories. In the digital age, the path has been made wider, shorter, and more frequently traveled. Throughout Owning Game-Changing Subcategories, David Aaker discusses certain aspects of the digital age that alter this path, such as E-commerce providing fast, inexpensive market access bypassing the cost of gaining distribution into storefront retailers or creating personal sales teams and social media and websites enabling communication on steroids in comparison with traditional use of advertising or events. Growth is not only a success measure but also creates energy and opportunity for customers and employees. And such growth almost never occurs with “my brand is better than your brand” marketing. Owning Game-Changing Subcategories explores the only ways to grow a business (with rare exceptions) which is to: develop new “must haves” that define a game-changing subcategory that provides a new or markedly superior buying or use experience or brand relationship to a core customer base; become the exemplar brand that represents the subcategory and drives its visibility, positioning, and success; and create barriers to competitors that could include “must-have” associations and a basis of relationships that go beyond functional benefits.

He was a true pioneer in probing fundamental dynamics. The book has two objectives. First is to showcase Okun's impact for decades since 1963, when he published his remarkable book Weak Interaction of Elementary Particles. Second is to present the current progress of our scientific community in the studies of our Universe. New directions and possible future developments are discussed, often using the past as a guide. The authors mostly focus on CP asymmetries in the transitions of hadrons and leptons, but they also discuss their rare decays, and talk about axions and supersymmetry, and possible connections with dark matter, extra dimensions, baryogenesis and multiverse. This book is suitable for readers who know quantum mechanics and quantum field theories in general.
