Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere is the claim to desire freedom so thoroughly denied by people's actions than in the sphere of religion. All religions, while claiming to set people free, instead multiply rules and restrictions. For this reason, almost all sermons on the believer's freedom spend more time hedging that freedom with warnings against sin than actually setting people free. But the Lord said, ?If the Son shall make you free, you are free indeed.? In the book of Galatians, Paul made a clear and powerful argument for the freedom of the believer. In this commentary, the author breaks the chains of bondage that many have put on this book: he sets the Book of Freedom free! With unassailable argument, he sets forth the radical freedom that is the possession of every believer, shows why believers can be trusted with that freedom, and unfolds that it is only in the context of this freedom that they can truly express the fruit of the Spirit?showing Christ and His Cross is the reason. Read it, believe it, and be free.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a frontal assault on all law based, obedience oriented religion. Most Christians carry a load of spiritual bondage, condemnation, guilt and shame. Some are deeply despondent and depressed because this load is too heavy for them to bear. Few Christians are truly confident in their personal relationship with God. This situation exists because: 1) Christians are generally unable to distinguish between actual sin versus mere human opinion about sin; 2) Christians do not understand that Jesus set them free from obedience based religion; 3) Christians do not know how to decide for themselves what is truly moral; 4) Christians have no real experience of "Christian Liberty." These issues are examined in sufficient detail to enable one to understand the radical nature of the "freedom for which Christ set us free," (Gal. 5:1). The author's goal is to destroy the roots of religious legalism so Christian believers can live the life of freedom which is their spiritual "blood-right." Beginning with a development of the "Master Key" to Biblical morality, the nature and implications of Christ's "Law of Love" are thoroughly explored. Next, the author discusses the true nature of morality, answering the question, "What exactly makes a thing sinful?" Careful attention is given to the concept of "defilement" or "uncleanness," with a bold look at Paul's revolutionary statement that "nothing is unclean of itself," (Rom. 14:14, 20). In Part Three, Legalism is exposed in all its ugliness. This section details the Biblical method for determining what is truly sin, and what is merely human opinion. Part Four destroys the bitter root of Legalism with persistent emphasis on the fact that Jesus Christ ended the rule of law by His life, death and resurrection. Part Five looks at the theology of Galatians, the Christian's "Emancipation Proclamation," closing with pointed illustration of how this all affects a Christian's liberty to exercise personal choice in what (s)he will or won't do. Five appendices explore several specific issues raised by the preceding study. These include: Conclusions About Christian Liberty "Contradictory" Scriptures? Christian Liberty and Sexual Issues The Necessity Of Experiencing Freedom The Non-Negotiables of Bible Study This is the only book on Christian Freedom written by an ex Fundamentalist. The author was raised in an atmosphere of extreme legalism. The first half of his Christian ministry was spent preaching, defending and even debating the concepts that he now seeks to destroy. The author lived in legalism forty years. He understands legalism. He therefore knows how to attack its vulnerable spots. His goal was not to write a book, but to give to anyone who is interested, information that will set them free from bondage to legalism and open the pathway to self-government under the rule of love. Book excerpt: Paul's notion of Christian liberty must be understood within the context of love, God's love for humanity as manifested in the person of Jesus Christ and the believer's love for God and neighbor. The apostle informs the Christians under his care that hey have been freed from the enslavement of sin and death so that they might love more fully. By virtue of their union with the risen Lord, Christians are free to love, in the deepest sense of the word, God, others, and themselves. John Buckel is a priest of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and an alumnus of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He is currently Assistant Professor of New Testament exegesis at St. Meinrad School of Theology. He has lectured extensively on St. Paul throughout the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galatians is one of the earliest of the Pauline letters and is therefore among the first documents written by Christians in the first century. Paul’s letter to the Galatians deals with the first real controversy in the early church: the status of Jews and gentiles in this present age and the application of the Law of Moses to gentiles. Paul argues passionately that gentiles are not “converting” to Judaism and therefore should not be expected to keep the Law. Gentiles who accept Jesus as Savior are “free in Christ,” not under the bondage of the Law. Galatians also deals with an important pastoral issue in the early church as well. If gentiles are not “under the Law,” are they free to behave any way they like? Does Paul’s gospel mean that gentiles can continue to live like pagans and still be right with God? For Paul, the believer’s status as an adopted child of God enables them to serve God freely as dearly loved children. Galatians: Freedom through God's Grace is commentary for laypeople, Bible teachers, and pastors who want to grasp how the original readers of Galatians would have understood Paul’s letter and how this important ancient letter speaks to Christians living in similar situations in the twenty-first century.

He argues that Galatians stands at the heart of the New Testament. Historically, this is because Paul's conflicts with Judaism, and with Jewish Christianity, ensured the freedom of the gospel to generate a potentially universal church. Theologically, the same conflicts provided a channel for the life and teaching of Jesus to flow through the ages -- BACK COVER.

Book excerpt: Many Christian women live in a world where they are judged by their performance. They struggle to please God and meet the standards others place on them--or the even higher standards they put on themselves. But in all their striving, is there any room left for grace? Sue Edwards and Jodie Niznik believe grace is the most misunderstood doctrine of the Christian faith. They delve into Galatians to explore the many ways Paul shows what it really is. Through principles, theological argument, story, pleading, coaxing, and even scolding, Paul shows us the folly of trying to please God in our own strength or by obeying the law. Sue and Jodie unpack what the law is, what its intent was, where legalism can enter and control readers' lives, and how to escape the bonds of guilt, shame, and false standards. Through this latest volume in the consistently popular Discover Together Bible Study series, readers discover nuances of grace that will revolutionize their lives. By understanding the transformative truth of grace, women will be set free to live wholly, radically, in and for Christ.

Book excerpt: A systemic problem plagues the local and global church: We habitually lose the gospel. In its place, we substitute personal prosperity, legalism, politics--and we end up paralyzing the mission of the church. Galatians contains Paul's passionate defense of the gospel. It shows us how to enjoy God's presence and everlasting peace, setting us free to love and be loved. In Live in Liberty, Daniel Bush and Noel Due help you apply the spiritual message of Galatians so that you may experience the liberating presence of God.
