Book excerpt: This is a science fiction adventure about how progressive hunger for wealth and power within a society [Planet Raihan] have resulted in duping other planets into mining valuable ore for them amidst the orbital hazards of Planet 6333. They have severely hurt other cultures along the way; raising themselves galactic prominence through manipulation of the relationship between a planet loaded with valuable ore, and a dimensional portal caught in a gravitational tug-of-war between two suns. From the beginning, remote miners are steadily shut off from communicating with their home planet through Raihan manipulation from a secret base located on a nearby moon; eventually feeling neglected and alone just as Planet 6333 enters the dangerous portal zone in the midst of its orbit. The victims ultimately see the Raihans as rescuers rather than kidnappers when they come in the midst of planetary chaos to steal the ore and take them as hostages. When examined closer, the Raihan culture is a paper tiger, dissolving from the inside out due to their evil ways. Circumstances arise that allow two smaller planetary forces [the Trecons and Ryderson-Omegans] to band together and challenge the Raihan goliath; but they can't do it alone. The story ends with a surprising twist, and points toward future adventures!

Book excerpt: Astrometry - the study of the positions of astronomical objects and how they move across the sky - is a cornerstone of modern astronomy. Pinning down the distances to and motions of stars in our Galaxy is fundamental - it can lead to an understanding of the origin of these stars and how together they affect the evolution of our Galaxy. Similarly, measuring the motions of planets, their satellites and asteroids is crucial to unravelling the origin and evolution of our solar system (as well as to the planning of space missions to explore them). A workshop held jointly by the Royal Greenwich Observatory and the Institute of Astronomy, in Cambridge, offered an unusual opportunity to bring together astronomers from the fields of Galactic and solar system astrometry. Gathered in this volume are the articles they presented. Together, these provide an auspicious review of optical astrometry and our understanding of the evolution of the Galaxy and solar system for graduate students and researchers.

Your planet is at a dire crossroads from a physical standpoint, but from a spiritual standpoint, it is experiencing a great awakening. Never before have there been so many conscious lightworkers, awakened spiritual beings, and masters as there are on this planet now. A great sense of a spiritual harmony emanates from the many starseed groups, and there is also a new spiritual energy and force that is spreading throughout the planet. We want to send this special Arcturian frequency to Earth, because it will suddenly release energy toward higher light. It is a throbbing, pulsing frequency that will bring you into alignment with the Galactic Council, Andromedans, Pleiadians, and many higher levels of etheric energy. Together, we will help you to remove a very powerful block from within your mind, opening you very quickly and directly to receiving the light and consciousness from these other beings. You will then receive ideas and images about how to do certain things and how to heal certain things in the physical. Material problems, business problems, medical problems, and political problems--all aspects are now going to be open to the fifth-dimensional energy and the fifth-dimensional realm. Be prepared for the possibilities of disruptions in your life from various sources such as political upheavals and storms. As you prepare, know that you are going to be sheltered and protected. You will find that maintaining the energy contacts with Arcturian starseeds will create energy bridges of support that will sustain you through anything that will happen on this planet. The more bridges you create, the stronger your Group of Forty is going to be. It is important for all of you to focus on the bridges--the energy bridges that you have made in the group and the energy bridges that you make with us as a group.

Book excerpt: Unmanned spacecraft have been studied for missions to Jupiter and beyond that will obtain scientific data including measurements of magnetic fields in interplanetary space. This report describes engineering considerations associated with design, development, and test of spacecraft and subsystems thereof that achieve sufficiently low levels of magnetic interference at the magnetometers to permit scientific measurement. Engineering methods and data are provided for selecting different background interference values, with 0.1 gamma being the value selected for illustration purposes in the study. Unique magnetic considerations associated with nuclear power supplies are covered. Selected test data are presented.

Book excerpt: Space missions subject human beings or any other target of a spacecraft to a radiation environment of an intensity and composition not available on earth. Whereas for missions in low earth orbit (LEO), such as those using the Space Shuttle or Space Station scenario, radiation exposure guidelines have been developed and have been adopted by spacefaring agencies, for exploratory class missions that will take the space travellers outside the protective confines of the geomagnetic field sufficient guidelines for radiation protection are still outstanding. For a piloted Mars mission, the whole concept of radiation protection needs to be reconsidered. Since there is an increasing interest of many nations and space agencies in establishing a lunar base and lor exploring Mars by manned missions, it is both, timely and important to develop appropriate risk estimates and radiation protection guidelines which will have an influence on the design and structure of space vehicles and habitation areas of the extraterrestrial settlements. This book is the result of a multidisciplinary effort to assess the state of art in our knowledge on the radiation situation during deep space missions and on the impact of this complex radiation environment on the space traveller. It comprises the lectures by the faculty members as well as short contributions by the students given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Biological Effects and Physics of Solar and Galactic Cosmic Radiation" held in Armacao de Pera, Portugal, 12-23 October, 1991.
