Book excerpt: We turned toward the blazing candles as one, watching in horror as they landed on the floor. The kerosene caught, the old floorboards immediately bursting into flames with a whoosh. As we watched in shock, the fire started around the room in both directions, surrounding us in seconds. We were trapped! “Gabriel Celtic!” I heard the man say from the hallway. “You have meddled one too many times in the affairs of God. He has determined that this is your day to die…enjoy your coming hell!” “Bastard!” I shouted after him, his laughter only renewed at my words. Turning toward Abby, I found her still transfixed, even as a line of flames approached her position. My heart stopped as I sprinted toward her, wrapping my arms around her waist and swinging her around, narrowly escaping the line of fire as it passed. When the passing fire reached the center of the room, it branched out left and right…creating an eerie cross that burned in the center of the floor…our final message from the man! “Bastard,” I repeated again helplessly under my breath. We both glanced around the room, glumly taking in our quickly deteriorating situation. The room was rapidly being devoured by the fire, and the smoke was already choking us to tears. Seeing a burning chair against the wall, I grabbed it and ran toward the curtained window, flinging it through the material at the last second. The shattering of glass that met my ears was a welcome sound, even as the added air promptly hiked up the level of the fire. Grabbing Abby’s hand, her eyes were wide as I shouted, “One chance kid, let’s do this!” We both started running toward the wide window, the curtains that blocked it burning at full intensity. Jumping blindly, I said a quick prayer as our bodies were propelled through the burning fabric… into nothingness...

Download or read book Gabriel's Insurrection written by Ron Larson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no state rivals Virginia when it comes to early history. Yet, there are many aspects of Virginia's early history that are either unknown or vaguely known by the general public. Over the last thirty years, Larson has written over thirty plays that deal with these aspects and the generally well-known men and women involved in them. These people include such names as Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, Patrick Henry, Meriwether Lewis, John Randolph, John Robinson, Nathaniel Bacon, William Berkeley, John Chiswell, Martha Jefferson, Harry Lee, Nancy Randolph, Theodosia Burr and Edmund Pendleton. The name Gabriel Prosser is little known, yet in the summer of 1800 this enslaved blacksmith planned to lead a large slave insurrection in the Richmond area; however information regarding the revolt was leaked prior to its execution and Gabriel's plans were thwarted. Gabriel and twenty-six members of the revolt were hanged. In 2007 Virginia Governor Tim Kaine gave Gabriel and his followers an informal pardon in recognition that his cause, "the end of slavery and the furtherance of equality for all people --- has prevailed in the light of history."

But as he begins the journey to Saratoga, he finds that high-stakes horse racing can be a nasty business as he works to keep Aristo safe and fend off horse poachers and jealous jockeys. Gabriel also learns the difficult lesson that being freed is not the same as being free. More than ever, Gabriel misses his father, who is fighting with the Union Army. Who else can he trust? In the second book of the Racing to Freedom trilogy, Alison Hart continues to explore the complex relationships of the Civil War. The result is a gripping story that vividly brings to life the danger and drama of a time when war and issues of race and freedom divided the country. Background historical material and photos are included.

Book excerpt: This is noisily Protestant England - the England of William and Mary's Glorious Revolution at the end of a century of civil strife. This is London in the 1690s, the monster city tamed into awe by our only Orpheus: Henry Purcell. Monarchs, princes, prostitutes, wigmakers, composers, tapsters, musicians, transvestites and watermen jostle for attention in the teeming, unruly world of late seventeenth-century London, where enthralling stories both real and imagined merge and intersect. Samuel Adamson's Gabriel premiered at Shakespeare's Globe, London, in July 2013 with Alison Balsom, one of the world's finest trumpeters, performing the music of Purcell and Handel. Every day three trumpet calls from the theatres on the Bankside, then songs would float over the thatch and roll across the water and make my work sweet.
