Book excerpt: This unique contemporary account of Haig's GHQ gives a vivid insight into life in Montreuil-sur-Mer from 1916 onwards, and of the complexity of the planning the ultimate defeat of the German Army. The addition of the never generally published statistical summary of casualties, ammunition and supplies adds to the appreciation of Haig's achievement. "This remarkable book details what life was like in my Grandfather Haig's GHQ as the final defeat of the German Army was planned. Haig's farsightedness in promoting Education was a precursor of his dedication to the welfare of soldiers after the War. Its republication, together with statistics -never previously seen- are an index of the enormity of the task that he orchestrated." The Rt Hon Lord Astor of Hever Former Defence Minister. "Montreuil-sur-Mer was surprised to find itself at the heart of the British Army military machine between 1916 and 1919. Frank Fox's vivid contemporaneous account as a Staff Officer at GHQ describes the exceptional period during which this medieval town became the nerve centre of the Anglo-Saxon world." Dr. Bruno Bethouart Professor of Modern Contemporary History Co-chair of MCM, Memoires des Conflits, en Montreuillois Former Mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer

The conclusion reached in this book prompts thoughts as to why the military authorities never conducted an investigation at the time, and why the raid was planned in the first place.
Download or read book Haig's Intelligence written by Jim Beach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haig's Intelligence is an important study of Douglas Haig's controversial command during the First World War. Based on extensive new research, it addresses a perennial question about the British army on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918: why did they think they were winning? Jim Beach reveals how the British perceived the German army through a study of the development of the British intelligence system, its personnel and the ways in which intelligence was gathered. He also examines how intelligence shaped strategy and operations by exploring the influence of intelligence in creating perceptions of the enemy. He shows for the first time exactly what the British knew about their opponent, when and how and, in so doing, sheds significant new light on continuing controversies about the British army's conduct of operations in France and Belgium and the relationship between Haig and his chief intelligence officer, John Charteris.

Download or read book Archives of War written by Debra Ramsay and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comparative analysis of British Army Unit War Diaries in the two World Wars, to reveal the role played by previously unnoticed technologies in shaping the archival records of war. Despite thriving scholarship on the history of war, the history of Operational Record Keeping in the British Army remains unexplored. Since World War I, the British Army has maintained daily records of its operations. These records, Unit War Diaries, are the first official draft of events on the battlefield. They are vital for the army’s operational effectiveness and fundamental to the histories of British conflict, yet the material history of their own production and development has been widely ignored. This book is the first to consider Unit War Diaries as mediated, material artefacts with their own history. Through a unique comparative analysis of the Unit War Diaries of the First and Second World Wars, this book uncovers the mediated processes involved in the practice of operational reporting and reveals how hidden technologies and ideologies have shaped the official record of warfare. Tracking the records into The National Archives in Kew, where they are now held, the book interrogates how they are re-presented and re-interpreted through the archive. It investigates how the individuals, institutions and technologies involved in the production and uses of unit diaries from battlefield to archive have influenced how modern war is understood and, more importantly, waged. This book will be of much interest to students of media and communication studies, military history, archive studies and British history.
