Book excerpt: Fuzzy set approaches are suitable to use when the modeling of human knowledge is necessary and when human evaluations are needed. Fuzzy set theory is recognized as an important problem modeling and solution technique. It has been studied ext- sively over the past 40 years. Most of the early interest in fuzzy set theory pertained to representing uncertainty in human cognitive processes. Fuzzy set theory is now - plied to problems in engineering, business, medical and related health sciences, and the natural sciences. This book handles the fuzzy cases of classical engineering e- nomics topics. It contains 15 original research and application chapters including different topics of fuzzy engineering economics. When no probabilities are available for states of nature, decisions are given under uncertainty. Fuzzy sets are a good tool for the operation research analyst facing unc- tainty and subjectivity. The main purpose of the first chapter is to present the role and importance of fuzzy sets in the economic decision making problem with the literature review of the most recent advances.

Book excerpt: In the mid-1960's I had the pleasure of attending a talk by Lotfi Zadeh at which he presented some of his basic (and at the time, recent) work on fuzzy sets. Lotfi's algebra of fuzzy subsets of a set struck me as very nice; in fact, as a graduate student in the mid-1950's, I had suggested similar ideas about continuous-truth-valued propositional calculus (inffor "and", sup for "or") to my advisor, but he didn't go for it (and in fact, confused it with the foundations of probability theory), so I ended up writing a thesis in a more conventional area of mathematics (differential algebra). I especially enjoyed Lotfi's discussion of fuzzy convexity; I remember talking to him about possible ways of extending this work, but I didn't pursue this at the time. I have elsewhere told the story of how, when I saw C. L. Chang's 1968 paper on fuzzy topological spaces, I was impelled to try my hand at fuzzi fying algebra. This led to my 1971 paper "Fuzzy groups", which became the starting point of an entire literature on fuzzy algebraic structures. In 1974 King-Sun Fu invited me to speak at a U. S. -Japan seminar on Fuzzy Sets and their Applications, which was to be held that summer in Berkeley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 25 years, the fuzzy set theory has been applied in many disciplines such as operations research, management science, control theory, artificial intelligence/expert system, etc. In this volume, methods and applications of fuzzy mathematical programming and possibilistic mathematical programming are first systematically and thoroughly reviewed and classified. This state-of-the-art survey provides readers with a capsule look into the existing methods, and their characteristics and applicability to analysis of fuzzy and possibilistic programming problems. To realize practical fuzzy modelling, we present solutions for real-world problems including production/manufacturing, transportation, assignment, game, environmental management, resource allocation, project investment, banking/finance, and agricultural economics. To improve flexibility and robustness of fuzzy mathematical programming techniques, we also present our expert decision-making support system IFLP which considers and solves all possibilities of a specific domain of (fuzzy) linear programming problems. Basic fuzzy set theories, membership functions, fuzzy decisions, operators and fuzzy arithmetic are introduced with simple numerical examples in aneasy-to-read and easy-to-follow manner. An updated bibliographical listing of 60 books, monographs or conference proceedings, and about 300 selected papers, reports or theses is presented in the end of this study.

Book excerpt: The genus of definitions for the theoretical sciences is (the province of) the habitus of the intellective intention, for the practical sciences, however, that of the effective intention; the objects and ends constitute the specific differ ence There is nothing in the intellect that has not already been in the senses, that is, in the sensory organs, that has not already been in sensible things from which are distinguished things not perceptible to the senses. Nothing can be of the mind, sensation and the thing inferred therefrom except the operation itself. Real learning is cognition of things in themselves. It thus has the basis of its certainty in the known thing. This is established in two ways: by demon stration in the case of contemplative things, and by induction in the case of things perceptible to the senses. In contrast with real learning there is pos sible, probable and fictive learning. Antonius Gvilielmus Amo Afer (1827) This research has been long in the making. Its conception began in my last years in the doctoral program at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa. It was simultaneously conceived with my two books on the Neo Keynesian Theory of Optimal aggregate investment and output dynamics [201] [202] as well as reflections on the methodology of decision-choice rationality and development economics [440] [441]. Economic theories and social policies were viewed to have, among other things, one impor tant thing in common in that they relate to decision making under different.

Book excerpt: This book presents a mathematically-based introduction into the fascinating topic of Fuzzy Sets and Fuzzy Logic and might be used as textbook at both undergraduate and graduate levels and also as reference guide for mathematician, scientists or engineers who would like to get an insight into Fuzzy Logic. Fuzzy Sets have been introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in 1965 and since then, they have been used in many applications. As a consequence, there is a vast literature on the practical applications of fuzzy sets, while theory has a more modest coverage. The main purpose of the present book is to reduce this gap by providing a theoretical introduction into Fuzzy Sets based on Mathematical Analysis and Approximation Theory. Well-known applications, as for example fuzzy control, are also discussed in this book and placed on new ground, a theoretical foundation. Moreover, a few advanced chapters and several new results are included. These comprise, among others, a new systematic and constructive approach for fuzzy inference systems of Mamdani and Takagi-Sugeno types, that investigates their approximation capability by providing new error estimates.

Book excerpt: The theory of dynamic equations has many interesting applications in control theory, mathematical economics, mathematical biology, engineering and technology. In some cases, there exists uncertainty, ambiguity, or vague factors in such problems, and fuzzy theory and interval analysis are powerful tools for modeling these equations on time scales. The aim of this book is to present a systematic account of recent developments; describe the current state of the useful theory; show the essential unity achieved in the theory fuzzy dynamic equations, dynamic inclusions and optimal control problems on time scales; and initiate several new extensions to other types of fuzzy dynamic systems and dynamic inclusions. The material is presented in a highly readable, mathematically solid format. Many practical problems are illustrated, displaying a wide variety of solution techniques. The book is primarily intended for senior undergraduate students and beginning graduate students of engineering and science courses. Students in mathematical and physical sciences will find many sections of direct relevance.

Book excerpt: Criticism is the habitus of the contemplative intellect, whereby we try to recognize with probability the genuine quality of a l- erary work by using appropriate aids and rules. In so doing, c- tain general and particular points must be considered. The art of interpretation or hermeneutics is the habitus of the contemplative intellect of probing into the sense of somewhat special text by using logical rules and suitable means. Note : Hermeneutics differs from criticism as the part does from the whole. Antonius Gvilielmus Amo Afer (1727) There is no such thing as absolute truth. At best it is a subj- tive criterion, but one based upon valuation. Unfortunately, too many people place their fate in the hands of subjective without properly evaluating it. Arnold A. Kaufmann and Madan M. Gupta The development of cost benefit analysis and the theory of fuzzy decision was divided into two inter-dependent structures of identification and measurement theory on one hand and fuzzy value theory one the other. Each of them has sub-theories that constitute a complete logical system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Modeling using Fuzzy Logic has been a dream project for the author. Fuzzy logic provides a unique method of approximate reasoning in an imperfect world. This text is a bridge to the principles of fuzzy logic through an application-focused approach to selected topics in engineering and management. The many examples point to the richer solutions obtained through fuzzy logic and to the possibilities of much wider applications. There are relatively very few texts available at present in fuzzy logic applications. The style and content of this text is complementary to those already available. New areas of application, like application of fuzzy logic in modeling of sustainability, are presented in a graded approach in which the underlying concepts are first described. The text is broadly divided into two parts: the first treats processes, materials, and system applications related to fuzzy logic, and the second delves into the modeling of sustainability with the help of fuzzy logic. This book offers comprehensive coverage of the most essential topics, including: Treating processes, materials, system applications related to fuzzy logic Highlighting new areas of application of fuzzy logic Identifying possibilities of much wider applications of fuzzy logic Modeling of sustainability with the help of fuzzy logic The level enables a selection of the text to be made for the substance of undergraduate-, graduate-, and postgraduate-level courses. There is also sufficient volume and quality for the basis of a postgraduate course. A more restricted and judicious selection can provide the material for a professional short course and various university-level courses.
