Book Synopsis The Future of the World by : Jenny Andersson
Download or read book The Future of the World written by Jenny Andersson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of the World is devoted to the intriguing field of study which emerged after World War Two, futurism or futurology. Jenny Andersson explains how futurist scholars and researchers imagined the Cold War and post Cold War world and the tools and methods they would use to influence and change that world. Futurists were a motley crew of Cold War warriors, nuclear scientists, journalists, and peace activists. Some argued it should be a closed sphere of science defined by delimited probabilities. They were challenged by alternative notions of the future as a potentially open realm. Futurism also drew on an eclectic range of repertoires, some of which were deduced from positivist social science, mathematics, and nuclear physics, and some of which sprung from alternative forms of knowledge in science fiction, journalism, or religion. These different forms of prediction laid very different claims to how accurately futures could be known, and what kind of control could be exerted over what was yet to come. The Future of the World carefully examines these different engagements with the future, and inscribes them in the intellectual history of the post war period. Using unexplored archival collections, The Future of the World reconstructs the Cold War networks of futurologists and futurists.

Book Synopsis Futurology In Education And Learning by : Cosmina L Voinea
Download or read book Futurology In Education And Learning written by Cosmina L Voinea and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book represents an accessible and comprehensive point of reference for both the academic and the practitioner world in showing how education can be transformed and innovated to become more sustainable and resilient. The recent covid crisis shows that the education system and approaches used are not sustainable but can be ambushed and reactive. How can we (in the present) determine what we should learn to be prepared for the future? How can education be changed so that we learn more quickly and more effectively? Not only focusing on new methods/technologies but also on innovation of the learning process. How to use the experience to create future proof education and how certain innovations in education play a role in this transition? These are some of the questions answered in the book. It represents an overview of the state of affairs of innovative techniques used in education from both distance and face-to-face education. The topic of innovation is highly relevant for both the business world and a challenging and complex subject for the education industry. This is a unique book that offers new empirical insights for practitioners and policy makers of the field. Our approach in designing this book was a critical reflection of field expertise and scholarly experience, tailored to the knowledge needs dictated by the novelty and complexity of the topic.

Book Synopsis A Brief History of the Future by : Jacques Attali
Download or read book A Brief History of the Future written by Jacques Attali and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will planet Earth be like in twenty years? At mid-century? In the year 2100? Prescient and convincing, this book is a must-read for anyone concerned about the future. Never has the world offered more promise for the future and been more fraught with dangers. Attali anticipates an unraveling of American hegemony as transnational corporations sever the ties linking free enterprise to democracy. World tensions will be primed for horrific warfare for resources and dominance. The ultimate question is: Will we leave our children and grandchildren a world that is not only viable but better, or in this nuclear world bequeath to them a planet that will be a living hell? Either way, he warns, the time to act is now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dozen essays from a July 1994 conference at the University of San Marino argue that a total shift to electronic information media would trigger wrenching social and cultural dislocations. Among their perspectives are the pragmatics of the new, farewell to the information age, toward meta-reading, hypertext and authorship, and the body of the text. They avoid the usual fetish arguments such as curling up in bed or leather bindings and pipes. Novelist Umberto Eco provides an afterward. No index or word search. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The classic work that predicted the anxieties of a world upended by rapidly emerging technologies—and now provides a road map to solving many of our most pressing crises. “Explosive . . . brilliantly formulated.” —The Wall Street Journal Future Shock is the classic that changed our view of tomorrow. Its startling insights into accelerating change led a president to ask his advisers for a special report, inspired composers to write symphonies and rock music, gave a powerful new concept to social science, and added a phrase to our language. Published in over fifty countries, Future Shock is the most important study of change and adaptation in our time. In many ways, Future Shock is about the present. It is about what is happening today to people and groups who are overwhelmed by change. Change affects our products, communities, organizations—even our patterns of friendship and love. But Future Shock also illuminates the world of tomorrow by exploding countless clichés about today. It vividly describes the emerging global civilization: the rise of new businesses, subcultures, lifestyles, and human relationships—all of them temporary. Future Shock will intrigue, provoke, frighten, encourage, and, above all, change everyone who reads it.

The world did not end on December 21st as the Mayan calendar predicted, but became the stage for new beginnings, utopian communities, protest groups and solidarity movements. The essays in this book form an intertextual space for negotiating meaningful facts and fictions with an aim to understanding the present. Discussions focus on utopia and dystopia from literature and film, not only within the framework of science fiction but also critical theory, gender politics and social sciences. The authors of these essays are international academics whose interest lies in utopian studies and who attended the 13th International Conference of Utopian Studies, “The Shape of Things to Come”, held in Tarragona, Spain, in 2012.

Book Synopsis Shaping Tomorrow's World by : Elke Seefried
Download or read book Shaping Tomorrow's World written by Elke Seefried and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaping Tomorrow’s World tells the crucial story of how futures studies developed in West Germany, Europe, the US and within global futures networks from the 1940s to the 1980s. It charts the emergence of different approaches and thought styles within the field ranging from Cold War defense intellectuals such as Herman Kahn to critical peace activists like Robert Jungk. Engaging with the challenges of the looming nuclear war, the changing phases of the Cold War, ‘1968’, and the growing importance of both the Global South and environmentalism, this book argues that futures scholars actively contributed to these processes of change. This multiple award-winning study combines national and transnational perspectives to present a unique history of envisioning, forecasting, and shaping the future.
