Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Main Group Metal Catalysis gives a comprehensive overview of catalytic reactions in the presence of group 1 and group 2 metals. Chapters are ordered to reaction type, contain educational elements and deal with concepts illustrated by examples that cover the main developments. After a short introduction on polar organometallic chemistry and synthesis of early main group metal complexes, a variety of catalytic reactions are described, e.g. polymerization of alkenes, hydroamination and phosphination reactions, hydrosilylation, hydroboration and hydrogenation catalysis, as well as enantioselective and Lewis-acid catalysis. The book addresses organic chemists and researchers in industry interested in the state-of-the-art and new possibilities of early main group metal catalysis as well as newcomers to the field. Written by a team of leaders in the field, it is a very welcome addition to the area of main group metal chemistry, and to the field of catalysis.

Book excerpt: Boron is a trivalent metalloid element which occurs abundantly in the evaporite ores borax and ulexite. Elemental boron is used as a dopant in the semiconductor industry, while boron compounds play important roles as light structural materials, insecticides and preservatives, and reagents for chemical synthesis. Boron is an essential plant nutrient. Whereas lack of boron results in boron deficiency disorder, high soil concentrations of boron may also be toxic to plants. This book presents current research in the study of boron, including borophosphates; boron in higher plants; thermodynamic stability of boride semiconductor alloys; boron beam interaction with matter; boron processing in the solar cell industry; and treatment of boron-containing water.

Book excerpt: Boron Nitride Nanotubes in Nanomedicine compiles, for the first time in a single volume, all the information needed by researchers interested in this promising type of smart nanoparticles and their applications in biomedicine. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) represent an innovative and extremely intriguing class of nanomaterials. After introducing BNNTs and explaining their preparation and evaluation, the book shows how the physical, chemical, piezoelectric and biocompatibility properties of these nanotubes give rise to their potential uses in biomedicine. Evidence is offered (from both in vitro and in vivo investigations) for how BNNTs can be useful in biomedical and nanomedicine applications such as therapeutic applications, tissue regeneration, nanovectors for drug delivery, and intracellular nanotransducers. Covers a range of promising biomedical BNNT applications Provides great value not just to academics but also industry researchers in fields such as materials science, molecular biology, pharmacology, biomedical engineering, and biophysical sciences Offers evidence for how BNNTs can be useful in biomedical and nanomedicine applications such as therapy, tissue regeneration, nanovectors for drug delivery, and intracellular nanotransducers Incorporates, for the first time in a single volume, all the information needed by researchers interested in this promising type of smart nanoparticles and their applications in biomedicine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boron compounds have been used extensively in organic synthesis for more than sixty years. Some of the best known reactions in synthesis, such as the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and the hydroboration reaction, involve boron compounds. Several natural products containing boron have been isolated in the last fifty years, including ionophoric macrodiolide antibiotics boromycin, borophycin, aplasmomycins A, B, and C, and tartrolons B, C, and E, as well as autoinducer-2. The study of compounds containing boronic acids for application in pharmaceuticals and materials science has grown tremendously over the last few decades. These include bortezomib, ixazomib, and tavaborole. Several more boron-based drugs are currently in clinical trials. Boron neutron capture therapy has the potential to provide a treatment for various cancers. In addition, materials bearing boronic acids are been studied as potential sensors for biological molecules, such as saccharides and glycoproteins that possess cis-1,2- or cis-1,3-diols.
