Book excerpt: This brochure highlights a few examples of how the EU has implemented the CBD. It shows that concerted international action can be highly effective. A lot has been achieved, and this is something that we should be proud of. However, despite current efforts, biodiversity is continuing to be lost in Europe and in the world at large. This is therefore a time not only to take stock but to re-double our efforts.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, the international community placed both biodiversity protection and trade liberalization high on its agenda, resulting in the formation of global agreements and institutions, such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Distinct in character, they are increasingly linked through the many ways that trade rules affect biodiversity. Developing separately and involving very different communities, there is a risk that the rules and policies of one regime could hinder the effectiveness of the other. This publication seeks to encourage sustainable development by examining and building upon the complementary aspects of these two international regimes. It describes specific proposals fo resolving or avoiding conflicts and for promoting synergies, including opportunities to support effective implementation of the trade-related aspects of the CBD. Intended as background for both trade and environment experts and officials, as well as for environment and development non-governmental organizations.

Book excerpt: Climate change is likely to have major environmental effects on natural habitats in the next fifty years. Conservation of biological diversity will have to be modified drastically to avoid massive extinctions of species of threatened habitat types. Precise recommendations are made to governments and conservation agencies that collaborate in the framework of the Bern Convention. This publication provides a starting point for discussion about possible adaptation strategies if Europe's biodiversity is to be conserved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implications of biodiversity loss for the global environment have been widely discussed, but only recently has attention been paid to its direct and serious effects on human health. Biodiversity loss affects the spread of human diseases, causes a loss of medical models, diminishes the supplies of raw materials for drug discovery and biotechnology, and threatens food production and water quality. Biodiversity and Human Health brings together leading thinkers on the global environment and biomedicine to explore the human health consequences of the loss of biological diversity. Based on a two-day conference sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution, the book opens a dialogue among experts from the fields of public health, biology, epidemiology, botany, ecology, demography, and pharmacology on this vital but often neglected concern. Contributors discuss the uses and significance of biodiversity to the practice of medicine today, and develop strategies for conservation of these critical resources. Topics examined include: the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss emerging infectious diseases and the loss of biodiversity the significance and use of both prescription and herbal biodiversity-derived remedies indigenous and local peoples and their health care systems sustainable use of biodiversity for medicine an agenda for the future In addition to the editors, contributors include Anthony Artuso, Byron Bailey, Jensa Bell, Bhaswati Bhattacharya, Michael Boyd, Mary S. Campbell, Eric Chivian, Paul Cox, Gordon Cragg, Andrew Dobson, Kate Duffy-Mazan, Robert Engelman, Paul Epstein, Alexandra S. Fairfield, John Grupenhoff, Daniel Janzen, Catherine A. Laughin, Katy Moran, Robert McCaleb, Thomas Mays, David Newman, Charles Peters, Walter Reid, and John Vandermeer. The book provides a common framework for physicians and biomedical researchers who wish to learn more about environmental concerns, and for members of the environmental community who desire a greater understanding of biomedical issues.

Book excerpt: Economic forces underlie and explain much biodiversity degradation and loss, and economic instruments provide a useful set of tools for strengthening biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and equitable benefit sharing. If National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans are to be effective they must be justifiable in economic terms. This document reports on a project reviewing the use of economic measures in NBSAPs, It brings together the component activities of the economics review, and summarizes and synthesizes this information to provide guidance on experiences, lessons learned and ways forward in the use of economic measures.

Book excerpt: Biodiversity is the unique web of life on Earth. We are part of it and depend on it for our survival and quality of life. Biodiversity and healthy ecosystems purify the water we drink and the air we breathe; they provide us with food, materials and medicines, maintain soil fertility, regulate the climate and protect us from extreme weather. Biodiversity and ecosystem services are being lost and degraded at rates unprecedented in human history. The loss of our natural capital undermines humanity's livelihoods and opportunities for sustainable development. It has been estimated that biodiversity loss costs the EU 3% of its GDP annually. In May 2011, the European Commission adopted an ambitious strategy to halt the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the EU by 2020, to restore them to the extent possible and to step up efforts to avert global biodiversity loss.^The implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives, including Natura 2000, the European network of protected areas, is a core element of this strategy. The strategy also contributes to the implementation of the EU's international commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity, and to the new global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The European Commission is currently preparing a mid-term review of the implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020, to take stock of progress and identify gaps in implementation. An on-going Fitness Check of the Birds and Habitats Directives will provide a basis for reflection on how EU nature legislation can fully deliver its objectives.^Protecting and restoring biodiversity is a key aim for the EU, but what do Europeans think? This survey was designed to explore European citizens' awareness and views on: biodiversity and the importance of preserving it ; the seriousness and impact of biodiversity loss at individual, domestic, European and global levels ; the biggest threats to biodiversity ; what the EU should do to prevent the loss of biodiversity, both within the EU and globally ; the role of the Natura 2000 network and attitudes to developments that may damage these protected areas, and personal efforts to protect nature and biodiversity. This survey was carried out by TNS Opinion & Social network in the 28 Member States of the European Union between the 30th of May and 8th of June 2015. Some 27,718 respondents from different social and demographic groups were interviewed face-to-face at home in their mother tongue on behalf of the Directorate-General for Environment.^The methodology used is that of Eurobarometer surveys as carried out by the Directorate-General for Communication ("Strategy, Corporate Communication Actions and Eurobarometer" Unit). A technical note on the manner in which interviews were conducted by the Institutes within the TNS Opinion & Social network is appended as an annex to this report. Also included are the interview methods and confidence intervals.

The impact on the species and habitats protected by the Bern Convention may differ widely, depending on the species, their habitats and location. This publication includes six expert reports presenting concrete measures for addressing the vulnerability of Europe's natural heritage in the face of climate change and its effects, and how this heritage must adapt in order to survive. This publication reproduces the full text of Recommendation 135 (2008) on addressing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, adopted by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention in November 2008, which stresses the urgent need to tackle the impact of climate change on biological diversity and on its conservation. With this publication, the Council of Europe aims to increase awareness about the links between biodiversity and climate, and emphasise the large potential for synergies when addressing biodiversity loss and climate change in an integrated manner."--P. Book excerpt: The rapid decline of biological diversity as a result of human activities is a major challenge for the international community. National, regional, and international legislation has been introduced to halt this trend. This book reviews the effectiveness of the five most significant international biodiversity-related conventions: The Ramsar Convention, the World Heritage Convention, the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species, the Migratory Species Convention, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. A three-step approach is followed in this study. The first step comprises a survey of the concept of effectiveness with respect to international environmental agreements, which leads to a workable definition of effectiveness. The second step involves the development of a practical test - the Effectiveness Test - to determine the effectiveness of the five conventions in relation to the problems they intend to address. The final step concerns the actual examination and assessment of each individual convention on the basis of the Effectiveness Test. The findings are certainly worrying; these are testing times indeed.
