Book excerpt: The possible scaling of the axisymmetric component of spectral density of wall pressure in turbulent flow along a slender cylinder is reexamined with use of a formal low-wavenumber expansion in terms of fluctuating Reynolds stresses as sources. A rudimentary model of the sources is formed that conforms to the principle of local similarity near the wall and to probable implications of fluctuating and mean velocity profiles measured in cylindrical boundary layers. To the extent that wall pressure is exclusively due to such a turbulence field, to zero order in wavenumber, at least, it is indicated to scale with cylinder radius (a) and to agree in functional dependence with the current model for this low-wavenumber component. If the turbulence field (despite lack of experimental evidence) involves in addition a weak component that scales with boundary-layer thickness, then at sufficiently low frequencies and wavenumbers the corresponding contribution to wall pressure (when delta/a”1) may become dominant, and the extrapolation of the current model to very small omega a/U(Infinity) and the associated prediction of diameter dependence may then fail.

The magnitudes of the wall-pressure fluctuations agree with the Lilley-Hodgson theoretical results. Space-time correlations of the wall-pressure fluctuations generally agree with Willmarth's results for longitudinal separation distances. The convection velocity of the fluctuations is found to increase with increasing separation distances, and its significance is explained. Measurements with the longitudinal component of the velocity fluctuations indicate that the contributions to the wall-pressure fluctuations are from two regions, an inner region near the wall and an outer region linked with the intermittency.

The QDM flow model is coupled with a QDM combustion model and a nitrogen oxides (NOx) / soot emission model. With the established model chain, VVT operating strategies of diesel engine can be developed and optimized as part of the simulation for specific engine performance parameters and the lowest NOx and soot emissions.

The root-mean square wall pressure was 2.42 times the wall shear stress. The normalized power spectrum at high frequencies contained twice the energy density of the spectrum beneath a plane boundary layer. The convection speed was the same as that in a plane boundary layer but the eddy size was smaller by a factor of two. The smaller eddy size and unchanged convection speed account for the greater energy in the spectrum at high frequencies. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report reviews research on the turbulent boundary layer that develops on a cylinder in axial flow. Experimental results indicate that the transverse curvature results in a higher coefficient of friction and a fuller velocity profile than for a planar boundary layer. However, appropriate scaling laws and nondimensional scaling parameters are still elusive. The few turbulence measurements such as Reynolds stress and intermittency that are available for a cylindrical boundary layer suggest that the distribution of turbulent quantities in the boundary layer is somewhat different from a planar boundary layer, particularly as the boundary layer becomes thick compared to the radius of the cylinder. This is most likely a result of the tendency for a cylindrical boundary layer to become wake-like as the cylinder becomes very small. Measurements of turbulence intensity and detection of turbulence-generating events in a cylindrical boundary layer suggest that the mechanism for the production of turbulence near the wall is similar to that for other wall-bounded flows. However, there is experimental evidence that the outer flow interacts with the near-wall flow to modify the generation of turbulence. Suggestions for further work include more comprehensive and sophisticated measurements of turbulent quantities in cylindrical boundary layers as well as computational modeling.
