Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1940s marked a period of transition in interior design: the quarrel between ancient and modern was outdated, the combination of function and art was essential, and interior designers were more focused on new creations rather than on post-war reconstruction. The style of this period exhibits all the contradictions that arise from a society that was in a general state of shock, unsure of what the future would hold. Exemplary cabinet making marks the period, featuring famous names like T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbing and George Nelson from the United States. In France, Adnet, Arbus, Dominique, Kohlmann, Jallot, and Leleu produced sumptuous ensembles, with beautiful detailing. "Furniture and Interiors of the 1940s" features the work of numerous designers in 300 archival images and recent color photographs that shed new light on this transitional period in design, as it evolved both in Europe and in the United States.

Book excerpt: "The 1970s - a revolutionary decade born out of the turbulent late 1960s, during which militant outspokenness and cultural unrest shook up society with lasting effects. Protest against cultural norms and a disillusionment in consumerism went hand in hand with a strong sense of social commitment that propelled radical creative and functional changes in design." "Furniture and Interiors of the 1970s bears witness to the fusion of influences - both societal and individual - that took hold during this explosive decade and catapulted design into its contemporary framework."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: In many different parts of the world modern furniture elements have served as material expressions of power in the post-war era. They were often meant to express an international and in some respects apolitical modern language, but when placed in a sensitive setting or a meaningful architectural context, they were highly capable of negotiating or manipulating ideological messages. The agency of modern furniture was often less overt than that of political slogans or statements, but as the chapters in this book reveal, it had the potential of becoming a persuasive and malleable ally in very diverse politically charged arenas, including embassies, governmental ministries, showrooms, exhibitions, design schools, libraries, museums and even prisons. This collection of chapters examines the consolidating as well as the disrupting force of modern furniture in the global context between 1945 and the mid-1970s. The volume shows that key to understanding this phenomenon is the study of the national as well as transnational systems through which it was launched, promoted and received. While some chapters squarely focus on individual furniture elements as vehicles communicating political and social meaning, others consider the role of furniture within potent sites that demand careful negotiation, whether between governments, cultures, or buyer and seller. In doing so, the book explicitly engages different scholarly fields: design history, history of interior architecture, architectural history, cultural history, diplomatic and political history, postcolonial studies, tourism studies, material culture studies, furniture history, and heritage and preservation studies. Taken together, the narratives and case studies compiled in this volume offer a better understanding of the political agency of post-war modern furniture in its original historical context. At the same time, they will enrich current debates on reuse, relocation or reproduction of some of these elements.

Book excerpt: The first book from designer Michelle Nussbaumer features her dramatically lush interiors and shows readers how spaces can be inspired by travel and filled with treasures from around the world. As a curator who discovers exquisite treasures all over the world for her projects and her Dallas-based design store Ceylon et Cie, Michelle Nussbaumer has a signature style, in multilayered rooms that mix periods with antique textiles, embroideries and weavings, unconventional furniture, and global art. The result is unique interiors that might recall 1940s glamour or nineteenth-century England. Her first book, organized by mood and style, showcases interiors that range from calm to bold, and from rustic to exotic. These include Nussbaumer’s own stunning residences in Switzerland and Texas, as well as her work for clients around the country. Her sumptuous interiors—eclectic in style and influenced by the designer’s travels from Paris and Rome to Africa, Mexico, and China—provide alluring inspiration for design aficionados.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book by AD 100 designer Emily Summers, featuring interiors that celebrate a new idea of American modernism. Weaving mid-century Continental furniture and modern art by the likes of Frank Stella and Jasper Johns into important American homes, Summers has created a vast collection of cohesive, covetable interiors notable for their streamlined beauty. From a contemporary city penthouse to a 1940s ranch, from Summers' Round House, to her 60s Palm Springs getaway, the homes featured range in period and style, but all will serve as inspiration to readers looking to decorate in a Modernist tradition. Summers shares her building blocks of a great modernist house: how the interior should reflect its setting; how to combine fine art with design; why the interior and architecture must be linked; how to build collections; how to modernize traditional houses; and how to restore existing modernist houses. This is essential reading for fans of modernism and minimalism.

Book excerpt: This broad spectrum of interiors draws inspiration from both the classic French decorative tradition and the freshest Parisian home designs. Discover the rich diversity of Parisian style in thirty-four interiors that are rife with inspiration and grouped into five thematic chapters. Classic interiors feature crystal chandeliers and gilt-framed mirrors, a marble bust flanked by eighteenth-century Louis XV rattan chairs, or floral-embroidered Chinese tapestries paired with a mother-of-pearl-inlaid armoire. Modern interiors incorporate mod Tulip chairs, geometric Calder-esque mobiles, and vibrant-hued polycarbonate dining sets. A passion for collecting comes to the fore through taxidermy, tribal arts, Slavic textile motifs, 1950s domestic design pieces, or expertly grouped photographs. Designer and artist abodes exude an irrepressibly creative vibe, from kitsch playland to 1940s boudoir lounge. Romantic interiors include powdered palettes and Provençal fabrics or plush velvet couches and a whitewashed pine buffet.Guillaume de Laubier leads us into the private realm of the Parisian design elite, chez Jacques Garcia, Vanessa Bruno, Jacques Grange, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Pierre et Gilles, or the late fashion muse Loulou de la Falaise. His photographs capture sleek Scandinavian lines, traditionalist opulence, modernist curves, and exotic accents, documenting each unique interior with flair.

Book excerpt: The first and only monograph to celebrate Ward Bennett, the leading American interior and furniture designer. Ward Bennett (1917-2003) was a leading American designer whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in New York, he left home at thirteen and got his start in the city's garment district. He eventually left the fashion world and began to reinvent himself as the Ward Bennett we know today: designing architecture, interiors, furniture, textiles, and objects, all with his vision for simple form paired with elegant materials. His reputation earned him some of the day's most affluent clients: David Rockefeller and Chase Manhattan Bank, Gianni and Marella Agnelli, Tiffany & Co., and Rolling Stone magazine cofounders and publishers Jann and Jane Wenner, among others. Even after his death, his signature rich minimalism continues to be recognized and awarded. This, the first and only comprehensive monograph covering Bennett’s career, brings to life his work through previously unpublished materials, including an interview with Bennett.

Book excerpt: In the current world of twentieth-century design collecting, the trend has shifted away from accessible, mass-manufactured modernist furniture and toward designs that were custom-made or produced in very limited editions, with emphasis on American studio design of the 1940s to the 1990s. In contrast to the mass-produced mid-century furniture by Knoll and Herman Miller, American studio designs of the same period focused on novel forms and exquisite craftsmanship. Ranging from the organic shapes of George Nakashima and Vladimir Kagan to metalworks by Paul Evans, these limited production designs were highly sought after in their days by original tastemakers and movie stars. In the last decade, a revival for these rare designs began with connoisseurs such as Tom Ford.Modern Americanais the first full survey of the designs of this prolific but forgotten period, bringing to life again the works of Samuel Marx, Billy Haines, Wendell Castle, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Karl Springer, James Mont, and many others -- including J.B. Blunk, Michael Coffey, Wharton Esherick, Arthur Espenet Carpenter, Sam Maloof, Jack Rogers Hopkins, Paul Evans & Philip Lloyd Powell, Vladimir Kagan, George Nakashima, Silas Seandel, Charles Hollis Jones, Philip & Kevin LaVerne, Tommi Parzinger, Harvey Probber, Edward Wormley, John Dickinson, Arthur Elrod, and Paul Laszlo.
