Book excerpt: Christian Schubart's twice-weekly journal, the Deutsche Chronik, published in Ulm and Augsburg from 1774-1777, effectively laid the groundwork for the political and editorial journalism of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Germany. This investigation examines this first overtly political journal in Germany in terms of its content and form, its scope and its intent. Schubart's continuing problems with the censors, as well as his nemesis, Duke Karl Eugen of Württemberg ended with a ten-year incarceration. As the literary public sphere begins to carve out a political area in which to operate, it looks to journalism, and especially to Schubart and his fellow writers for ideas and inspiration.

Book excerpt: This two-volume work functions both as a textbook for graduates and as a reference for economic scholars. Assuming only the minimal mathematics background required of every second-year graduate in economics, the two volumes provide a self-contained and careful development of mathematics through locally convex topological vector spaces, and fixed-point, separation, and selection theorems in such spaces. This second volume introduces general topology, the theory of correspondences on and into topological spaces, Banach spaces, topological vector spaces, and maximum, fixed-point, and selection theorems for such spaces

Book excerpt: English In Eine wahrhaft königliche Stadt, Daniela Kah describes how contemporary residents and visitors were able to experience and perceive the presence of the Holy Roman Empire (or its representatives, e.g., the king) in three late medieval cities -- Augsburg, Nürnberg and Lübeck. After receiving privileges from the king, these cities initiated large construction projects designed to assert their imperial status. These projects had a major impact on everyday life and made the Empire visible and graspable within the city. However, in the 13th century the cities increasingly deployed symbols and signs to represent their self-understanding as 'imperial'. ‘Being immediate to the Empire’ or ‘being privileged’ provided important political, economic, and social benefits. Therefore it became very important to the cities to represent their status in visible form. For this reason, the Empire achieved a permanent and lasting presence in free imperial cities.

Book excerpt: For centuries, the relation between lay piety and academic theology has determined the faith of lay people as well as developments in theology, and influenced daily life as well as scholarly discussions. In this book an international and multidisciplinary panel of specialists, covering the fields of church history, history of literature, music history, book history, and art history reflects on a broad range of research topics, providing a fascinating and refreshing view on what this relation has been throughout the centuries. Christoph Burger has given a major impulse to the research into the history of theology, notably the issue of adapting academic theology for lay people. The contributions to this Festschrift reflect this broad spectrum of correlations between learned theology and lay piety from the Early Church period until modern times. The book contains contributions to the research on lay piety as well as academic theology in the Middle Ages, Reformation, and the modern period, as well as their representations in such media as printed books and woodcuts. The result is a truly epoch-transcending and interdisciplinary volume.
