Book excerpt: Realistic and immersive simulations of land, sea, and sky are requisite to the military use of visual simulation for mission planning. Until recently, the simulation of natural environments has been limited first of all by the pixel resolution of visual displays. Visual simulation of those natural environments has also been limited by the scarcity of detailed and accurate physical descriptions of them. Our aim has been to change all that. To this end, many of us have labored in adjacent fields of psych- ogy, engineering, human factors, and computer science. Our efforts in these areas were occasioned by a single question: how distantly can fast-jet pilots discern the aspect angle of an opposing aircraft, in visual simulation? This question needs some ela- ration: it concerns fast jets, because those simulations involve the representation of high speeds over wide swaths of landscape. It concerns pilots, since they begin their careers with above-average acuity of vision, as a population. And it concerns aspect angle, which is as much as to say that the three-dimensional orientation of an opposing aircraft relative to one’s own, as revealed by motion and solid form. v vi Preface The single question is by no means simple. It demands a criterion for eye-limiting resolution in simulation. That notion is a central one to our study, though much abused in general discussion. The question at hand, as it was posed in the 1990s, has been accompanied by others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents a technique for assessing the spatial resolution of visual display systems like those currently used for flight simulation at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Mesa, Arizona. The introduction defines spatial resolution, and how best to apply the concept in the context of visual display evaluation. The measurement technique is described in detail, as are the CCD-based light measurement device and the techniques developed to calibrate it. Typical spatial resolution data are presented for a variety of display systems. The various steps required for data analysis, and suggested methods for implementing these steps using standard applications programs are presented. The computer programs used to generate and display the test patterns and to estimate spatial resolution are described and are available from Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Visual information display systems connected to computers are fast becoming commonplace. They are found now in stock brokers' offices and schools as well as in jetliner control panels. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its contractors have developed and operated display systems of this type that can span nearly the whole spectrum of applications. This survey of computer-related visual information display systems was undertaken for the NASA Office of Technology Utilization so that others may benefit from NASA's experience. The input-output capabilities of human beings, which determine the requirements for such systems, are likely to be much the same outside of the aerospace field as they are within it. This publication is intended especially for middle management personnel in areas in which the potential benefits from such modern technology have not yet been realized. The report describes hardware and software with wide applications and explains the large-scale checkout and control systems used at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, the Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Manned Spacecraft Center. It also reviews findings in the Ames Research Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and other government and private laboratories. The reader is introduced to interactive display systems, simulation displays, and image enhancement techniques. Most of the examples cited are from aerospace work, but they were chosen because of their potentially broad utility."--Foreword.

Book excerpt: Principles of Flight Simulation is a comprehensive guide to flight simulator design, covering the modelling, algorithms and software which underpin flight simulation. The book covers the mathematical modelling and software which underpin flight simulation. The detailed equations of motion used to model aircraft dynamics are developed and then applied to the simulation of flight control systems and navigation systems. Real-time computer graphics algorithms are developed to implement aircraft displays and visual systems, covering OpenGL and OpenSceneGraph. The book also covers techniques used in motion platform development, the design of instructor stations and validation and qualification of simulator systems. An exceptional feature of Principles of Flight Simulation is access to a complete suite of software (www.wiley.com/go/allerton) to enable experienced engineers to develop their own flight simulator – something that should be well within the capability of many university engineering departments and research organisations. Based on C code modules from an actual flight simulator developed by the author, along with lecture material from lecture series given by the author at Cranfield University and the University of Sheffield Brings together mathematical modeling, computer graphics, real-time software, flight control systems, avionics and simulator validation into one of the faster growing application areas in engineering Features full colour plates of images and photographs. Principles of Flight Simulation will appeal to senior and postgraduate students of system dynamics, flight control systems, avionics and computer graphics, as well as engineers in related disciplines covering mechanical, electrical and computer systems engineering needing to develop simulation facilities.

Book excerpt: In the last decade, new displays have been developed at an ever-increasing pace: bulky cathode ray tubes have been replaced by flat panels and mobile phones, tablets, and navigation systems have proliferated. Seeing this explosion raises tantalizing questions about the future evolution of visual displays: Will printed displays be sold by the square yard and glued to the wall? Will disposable displays, powered by printed batteries and with built-in storage chips, talk to us from cereal boxes? Will we begin wearing display glasses that simulate any kind or number of virtual displays we would ever need? Will chip implants directly interface to our brains, eliminating the need for any displays at all? These and other questions are explored in Displays: Fundamentals & Applications, which describes existing and emerging display technology. The book begins by presenting the basics of wave optics, geometric optics, light modulation, visual perception, and display measures, along with the principles of holography. It then describes the technology and techniques behind projection displays, projector-camera systems, stereoscopic and autostereoscopic displays, computer-generated holography, and near-eye displays. In addition, the authors discuss how real-time computer graphics and computer vision enable the visualization of graphical 2D and 3D content. The text is complemented by more than 400 rich illustrations, which give readers a clear understanding of existing and emerging display technology.

Book excerpt: This volume presents papers from the fourth biennial Information Systems Foundation Workshop, held at The Australian National University in Canberra from 2¿3 October, 2008. The focus of the workshop was, as for the others in the series, the foundations of Information Systems as an academic discipline. The emphasis in this workshop was on the movement known as 'Design Science' and its importance in practical disciplines such as Information Systems. The chapters in the volume provide a critical examination of current design science ideas, with the role of human creativity given special mention. The philosophical underpinnings of design science thinking are also examined. Practically, the volume shows how the design science approach can be used in academic research that leads to artefacts that add value for individuals, organizations and society.
