Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Farmer's Guide: Fundamentals of Farming and Farm Life While there have been great strides in recent years in the development of text-books on elementary agriculture, the best texts are still unsatisfactory in many ways. The defects complained of arise largely out of the fact that these texts are usually prepared by busy scientists who, though they may know agriculture, have made little study of the mental processes of children, have had little or no experience in teaching children, and are not very familiar with the exact conditions in the schools in which the texts are to be used. The result is that the subject-matter has not always been wisely chosen in the light of children's natural interests and needs, nor has the subject-matter that was chosen been organized in a careful, pedagogical manner, by starting always with the known, leading to the unknown through the known, and making the study a closely knit, coherent, living whole. Indeed, several of the texts are mere collections of articles on a dozen or more varied topics written by specialists in different institutions and without any common plan of organization or method of presentation. The children are not introduced gradually to the new technical terms, nor are proper apperceptive bases first laid before attempting to present the more complex processes of plant or animal growth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Farmer's Guide: Fundamentals of Farming and Farm Life It was also the purpose of the authors to provide a book that did not stop with giving mere advice about farm prae tices to be memorized by the pupils, but taught first of all the fundamental principles of plant and animal growth and reproduction and of soil management. In this way the pupils are made able to understand the reasons for farm practices and to criticise any old or new practice independently. By emphasizing these far-reaching principles first, the thousand and one details of practice in the study of farm crops and animal husbandry which are later given become a matter for simple reasoning instead of a mere dead weight to be carried in memory. In order still further to develop the powers of observation, exercise the reason, and connect the lessons with the daily life and home needs of the pupils, lists of suggestive questions, exercises, and problems are provided for each subject. It is an astonishing fact that no text-book has given to the work of the farmer girls and farmers' wives more than a pass ing mention. Undoubtedly, the conditions in the country schools make this problem difficult, but it is believed that, with the aid of the experts in domestic economy and rural teaching who generously co - operated, a very valuable be ginning has been made in this text in enabling the school to give somewhat the same preparation for her life work on the farm to the farmer girl that is now given to the farmer boy. We have in general tried to broaden the conception of the course in elementary agriculture from that of a mere treatise on raising plants and animals for sale to that of a means of preparation for living intelligently and happily, as well as profitably, on the farm. It is a great pleasure to express here our appreciation of the assistance generously given by our colleagues in prepar ing this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change. Habitat loss. Soil erosion. Groundwater depletion. Toxins in our food. Inhumane treatment of farm animals. Increasing farm worker exploitation. Hunger and malnutrition in the midst of plenty. What will it take for farmers in the United States to embrace sustainable practices? Michael Mayerfeld Bell’s Farming for Us All first tackled this question twenty years ago, providing crucial insight into how the structure of US agriculture created this situation and exploring, by contrast, the practices of farmers who are working together to radically change how they think, learn, and grow. This updated edition of his now-classic work reflects on the lessons learned over the past two decades. Constrained by an oppressive nexus of markets, regulations, subsidies, and technology, farmers find themselves undermining their own economic and social security as well as the security of the land. Bell turns to Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), that state’s largest sustainable-agriculture group. He traces how PFI creates an agriculture that engages others—farmers, researchers, officials, and consumers—in a common conversation about what agriculture could look like. Through dialogue, PFI members crossbreed knowledge, discovering pragmatic solutions to help crops grow in ways that sustain families, communities, societies, economies, and environments. Farming for Us All makes the case that for sustainable farming to flourish, new social relations are as important to cultivate as new crops. This book is necessary—and hopeful—reading for anyone concerned about the present and future of food and farming.

Book excerpt: As modern farming and ranching evolve away from mass consolidation and industrialization, a new strategy is rapidly emerging: regenerative agriculture. These new systems being implemented across the globe require a shift in the mindset of the land manager and operator, away from being primarily reliant on external inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, and toward reliance on knowledge, measurement and management. In this first-of-its-kind book, André Leu casts aside judgment of our agriculture system today, and invites all to start moving a positive direction that focuses on growing abundant life. Inside this book, the first in a series, you will explore the fundamentals of regenerative agriculture, including specific, proven steps designed to grow healthy food, while regenerating our natural resources like clean water, soil and air.Readers will also learn:? the role of photosynthesis in a farming system;? successful tactics for ground cover and weed management;? soil health and nutrition;? building functional biodiversity; and? implementation and execution tactics.Includes a helpful appendix on vetted, natural inputs. Plus, enjoy inspiring pieces inside by Gary Zimmer, author of Biological Farmer, and Vandana Shiva, global author and advocate for natural, family farming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles and farm-tested practices for no-till market gardening--for healthier, more productive soil! From the host of the popular The No-Till Market Garden Podcast—heard around the world with nearly one million downloads! Discovering how to meet the soil’s needs is the key task for every market gardener. In this comprehensive guide, Farmer Jesse Frost shares all he has learned through experience and experimentation with no-till practices on his home farm in Kentucky and from interviews and visits with highly successful market gardeners in his role as host of The No-Till Market Garden Podcast. The Living Soil Handbook is centered around the three basic principles of no-till market gardening: Disturb the soil as little as possible Keep it covered as much as possible Keep it planted as much as possible. Farmer Jesse then guides readers in applying those principles to their own garden environment, with their own materials, to meet their own goals. Beginning with an exploration of the importance of photosynthesis to living soil, Jesse provides in-depth information on: Turning over beds Using compost and mulch Path management Incorporating biology, maintaining fertility Cover cropping Diversifying plantings through intercropping Production methods for seven major crops Throughout, the book emphasizes practical information on all the best tools and practices for growers who want to build their livelihood around maximizing the health of their soil. Farmer Jesse reminds growers that “as possible” is the mantra for protecting the living soil: disturb the soil as little as you possibly can in your context. He does not believe that growers should anguish over what does and does not qualify as “no-till.” If you are using a tool to promote soil life and biology, that’s the goal. Jesse’s goal with The Living Soil Handbook is to provide a comprehensive set of options, materials, and field-tested practices to inspire growers to design a soil-nurturing no-till system in their unique garden or farm ecosystem. "[A] practical, informative debut. . . .Gardeners interested in sustainable agriculture will find this a great place to start."—Publishers Weekly "Frost offers a comprehensive, science-based, sympathetic, wholly practical guide to soil building, that most critical factor in vegetable gardening for market growers and home gardeners alike. A gift to any vegetable plot that will keep on giving."—Booklist (starred review)
