The Sixth Edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the current economic condition in the United States and the world and reflects recent events in the Obama administration, especially in regard to healthcare. The supportive pedagogical framework that guides students through each chapter includes Fundamental Questions, which open and organize the chapter by focusing on three to six key issues, and which then reappear both at point of relevance in the margins and in the end-of-chapter Summary sections; Now You Try It checkpoint questions that quiz students on important concepts, with answers provided at the back of the book; Recaps at the end of each major section to break material into manageable segments; and end-of-chapter exercises that serve as self-checks for students and as homework assignment options for instructors. A built-in study guide follows each chapter, and provides a more intensive review opportunity for students, with answers provided in an appendix. Most chapters contain four pages of study material consisting of key term match-ups, multiple-choice quizzes, and practice questions and problems. A final section of application problems gives students an opportunity to analyze and synthesize what they have learned.

Book excerpt: This text by one of Europe's leading economists covers a wide variety of public economics issues with great clarity and precision, illustrating them with a wealth of carefully-chosen examples and problems. Starting from theories of general equilibrium analysis, Laffont considers issues of market failure, collective decisionmaking, and distributional equity. He analyzes the important informational and motivational problems involved in planning solutions for market failures, and provides a rigorous justification for the theoretical foundations of public economics. Topics include the theories of externalities, public goods, collective choice, consumer surplus, cost-benefit analysis and/or theory of the second best, incomplete markets, and nonconvexities. For each Laffont begins with the classical foundations, moves on to consider the topic within a simple model of the economy, and concludes by integrating results from recent journal articles into this simple framework. In this way students are led to understand the classical tradition in the context of modern general equilibrium theory. The book concludes with eight problems with solutions, each interesting and rich enough to be considered a case study, and nine exercises without solutions; together they provide an excellent review of material covered in the text. The basic approach in each problem is to set up a general equilibrium model, discover the market failure by calculating the unfettered equilibrium, and develop an explicit planning solution. Jean-Jacques Laffont is Professor of Economics at the University of Social Sciences at Toulouse. Fundamentals of Economics may be used in either an advanced graduate-level course in public economics or in conjunction with a second volume forthcoming by the same author in a course in advanced microeconomics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FIRST GERMAN edition of this book appeared in 1940. Since then the book has gone through five more editions and has been translated into Spanish and Italian. The present English translation is based on the sixth German edition. The author was Professor of Economics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Professor Eucken was a student at a time when the Historical School dominated the teaching of econo mics at the German universities. Although, at the beginning of his career, he did some work along the lines of the Historical School, neither the ~ims nor the methods of historical research the field of economics as practised by the representatives in of the Historical School satisfied him; and the fact that the members of this school were unable to explain the causes of economic events such as the German inflation after World War I was an added reason for him to turn to economic theory. He became, among German economists, the foremost opponent of the Historical School, which he criticised in several publica tions. Through his wrItings and his teaching he contributed his share to the revival of interest in economic theory which was noticeable in the 'twenties. And he was one of the few economists left in Germany who helped to keep this interest alive during the 'thirties and during World War II. During this time he published Kapitaltheoretische Untersuchungen (1936), and the present volume, which immediately gave rise to an extensive discussion in German economic journals.

Book excerpt: In 21 prescriptive rather than descriptive treatments, well known academic economists set out how they think the discipline should be practiced both internally and in relation to other fields and arenas of society. They explore economics as a historical process and as a public science, realism in model buildings, social science, normative and positive aspects, extracting information from data, and worthwhile economics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Economics breathes life into the discipline by linking key economic concepts with wider debates and issues. By bringing to light delightful mind-teasers, philosophical questions and intriguing politics in mainstream economics, it promises to enliven an otherwise dry course whilst inspiring students to do well. The book covers all the main economic concepts and addresses in detail three main areas: * consumption and choice * production and markets * government and the State. Each is discussed in terms of what the conventional textbook says, how these ideas developed in historical and philosophical terms and whether or not they make sense. Assumptions about economics as a discipline are challenged, and several pertinent students' anxieties ('Should I be studying economics?') are discussed.
