This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1959 Anderson et. al publish their paper „The CAA Doppler Omnirange”. In that contribution they present their analytically derived receiver‑model for quantifying the bearing error of the Doppler VOR (DVOR) due to multipath propagation. At that time this model exclusively serves for comparing the susceptibility of the DVOR with the one of its precursor which is the conventional VOR. For this purpose, they take the impact of a static omnidirectional scatterer solely upon one signal component into account, which is the frequency modulated one. Due to the number of already installed wind turbines and especially due to the desire to install way more turbines, the signal integrity of the DVOR has become a very timely topic in Germany in the context of renewables energies. In this dissertation Anderson’s basic generic model is both improved and substantially extended with respect to the impact of wind turbines upon the multipath signal. In the first part of this work Anderson’s error model is quantitively expended with respect to the relative amplitude of the scattering path. Furthermore, the analytical model is fundamentally improved with respect to quality: For the first time the analytical model allows to take the dynamic effects of wind turbines into account, i.e. both Doppler shifts as well as an additional amplitude modulation due to the scattering object — namely the wind turbine. Additionally, this analysis is carried out for the DVOR’s reference provided by an amplitude modulated signal component, which has been completely neglected so far by the current state of the art. These analytical models allow for extensive parameter studies, which are applicable e.g. for the validation of both numerical simulation tools as well as approaches by measurements. In the second part of this work the dynamic impact of wind turbines upon the DVOR’s bearing intelligence is investigated by measurements. This is carried out in an environment scaled with a ratio of 1:144. It utilizes the equipment realized within the projects “Sk-ILS” and “min-Vor-Win” and expands it by inventing a procedure for crafting and electromagnetically characterizing voluminous scattering bodies. These allow for a systematic analysis of the impact of terrain topologies. A variety of measurements and the corresponding fundamental analysis address: Doppler shifts and Doppler spectra depending on the orientation of the plane of rotation, the blades’ shape, revolutions per minute, and the position of the turbines as well as the amplitude and width of Doppler spectra. Fundamental results of this work are e.g.: A 10 km safety‑radius of the DVOR’s protective area, up to now applied in Germany and as well recommended by the ICAO, can be considered way to restrictive. Furthermore, the receiver settings play a crucial role, when determining the bearing error. Thus, stating the latter makes it mandatory to state the receiver settings as well.

This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing availability of computation power, digital signal analysis algorithms have the potential of evolving from the common framewise operational method to samplewise operations which offer more precision in time. This thesis discusses a set of methods with samplewise operations: local signal approximation via Recursive Least Squares (RLS) where a mathematical model is fit to the signal within a sliding window at each sample. Thereby both the signal models and cost windows are generated by Autonomous Linear State Space Models (ALSSMs). The modeling capability of ALSSMs is vast, as they can model exponentials, polynomials and sinusoidal functions as well as any linear and multiplicative combination thereof. The fitting method offers efficient recursions, subsample precision by way of the signal model and additional goodness of fit measures based on the recursively computed fitting cost. Classical methods such as standard Savitzky-Golay (SG) smoothing filters and the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) are united under a common framework. First, we complete the existing framework. The ALSSM parameterization and RLS recursions are provided for a general function. The solution of the fit parameters for different constraint problems are reviewed. Moreover, feature extraction from both the fit parameters and the cost is detailed as well as examples of their use. In particular, we introduce terminology to analyze the fitting problem from the perspective of projection to a local Hilbert space and as a linear filter. Analytical rules are given for computation of the equivalent filter response and the steady-state precision matrix of the cost. After establishing the local approximation framework, we further discuss two classes of signal models in particular, namely polynomial and sinusoidal functions. The signal models are complementary, as by nature, polynomials are suited for time-domain description of signals while sinusoids are suited for the frequency-domain. For local approximation of polynomials, we derive analytical expressions for the steady-state covariance matrix and the linear filter of the coefficients based on the theory of orthogonal polynomial bases. We then discuss the fundamental application of smoothing filters based on local polynomial approximation. We generalize standard SG filters to any ALSSM window and introduce a novel class of smoothing filters based on polynomial fitting to running sums.

This includes the use of hurdle rates in capital allocation decisions, as well as target returns in performance management. Besides a review of classical finance models such as the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), other contemporary models and techniques to determine the cost-of-capital of business units and private companies are discussed. Based on a mixed methods approach, current cost-of-capital practices and their determinants are empirically analyzed among German companies.

Book excerpt: A simple, quick and effective approach to quantitative fundamental analysis The Lazy Fundamental Analyst presents a collection of strategies based on the application of quantitative analysis to fundamentals-based investing. It will appeal to anyone looking for simple, effective and low-risk investing strategies. The strategies are organised by ten business sectors: Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Energy, Financials, Health Care, Industrials, Information Technology, Materials, Telecommunication Service and Utilities. For each sector a strategy is proposed for large capitalisations (companies in the S&P 500 Index) and another is given for small capitalisations (companies in the Russell 2000 index). For each sector, and each strategy, Fred Piard explains how to follow his 'lazy' approach to choose stocks by using only a couple of financial ratios. The strategies eschew detailed due diligence of companies and markets - instead they rely on applying quantitative techniques to filter out the best investments in each sector. These strategies can be managed in just a few minutes per month, making them suitable for those who only have limited time to devote to investing but still wish to have a winning return. Portfolio protection through the use of market timing and hedging is also presented and this can be used with any of the strategies. If you don't have the inclination for in-depth fundamental analysis, or only have a few spare minutes per month for your investing, try Fred Piard's lazy approach to quantitative analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook represents the development of research and the current level of knowledge in the fields of syntactic theory and syntax analysis. Syntax can look back to a long tradition. Especially in the last 50 years, however, the interaction between syntactic theory and syntactic analysis has led to a rapid increase in analyses and theoretical suggestions. This second edition of the Handbook on Syntax adopts a unifying perspective and therefore does not place the division of syntactic theory into several schools to the fore, but the increase in knowledge resulting from the fruitful argumentations between syntactic analysis and syntactic theory. It uses selected phenomena of individual languages and their cross-linguistic realizations to explain what syntactic analyses can do and at the same time to show in what respects syntactic theories differ from each other. It investigates how syntax is related to neighbouring disciplines and investigate the role of the interfaces especially the relationship between syntax and phonology, morphology, compositional semantics, pragmatics, and the lexicon. The phenomena chosen bring together renowned experts in syntax, and represent the consensus reached as to what has to be considered as an important as well as illustrative syntactic phenomenon. The phenomena discuss do not only serve to show syntactic analyses, but also to compare theoretical approaches with each other.
